What I love about Thursday Favorite Things is the variety of posts that we have! This week I’ve picked out a few of my favorites!

First, Katherine from Katherine’s Corner and our main hostess shared this wonderful recipe for an apple galette. Doesn’t it look beautiful? Please do swing by her blog; she spends a lot of time organizing this party for us all and would be so delighted to have you stop by.

Fall Table Decor using Natural Elements and Antiques

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

I had fun putting together this table for Fall!  I knew when I scored this antique paisley shawl at an estate sale this past Summer that I was going to use it for my Fall table! I like decorating with antiques and for Fall, I used natural elements – the pumpkins, corn, and wheat stalks!!

This post contains affiliate links.

The shawl is from around the 1850s and I got a really good deal on it! It is in great shape too!  I also knew I would use my antique dough bowl again this year, but I wanted the centerpiece to look different than last year… so I just decided to use white and the blue-gray Jarrah pumpkins.

What I thought was interesting was that when I placed the blue-gray pumpkins in the dough bowl, the blue-gray in the paisley started to pop out of the pattern! The green stems also go with the green in the paisley!

As you can see, I couldn’t help myself and bought the little white Staub pumpkin cocottes.  I could not decide if I liked the white pumpkin in the center (above) or the orange one (Below). I flipped and flopped them for a long time. Still don’t know what I like better!

When I spotted this deep purple Indian corn at our local farmer’s market (it is actually a farm stand I suppose as it is literally at the farm)… I knew I had to take it home with me!  I love how it goes with the purple goblets and purple linen napkins!!  The dried wheat stalks go with the dried corn!

I know that using plaids and tartans are pretty popular right now for Fall tables – I thought about doing that but I don’t have any Fall-colored tartans.  I haven’t really seen any Fall tables using paisley, have you?  I love this look of the table from up above.

This antique paisley is so pretty! I can’t believe how good of condition it is in considering how old it is!  When I was in Germany, I read an article about how Empress Josephine Bonaparte popularized the Kashmir paisley shawl in Western culture in the 1800s!  The paisley pattern means love.  It was quite expensive coming from Kashmir region and it was often gifted among the elite as a symbol of love.

Above, Empress Josephine Bonaparte in 1801 with a Kashmir Shawl.

Anyway, sorry for the distraction about the history of Paisley, I just thought it was interesting!  I love looking at the swirling pattern of the fabric and how the colors go with all of the natural elements on the table!  I confess, I actually don’t really like the color orange.  But I do like this shawl a lot!

I like the mixing of the old and the new.  Why should you put your antiques away when you can use them? This paisley shawl was sitting in the cedar chest, but it shouldn’t hide there all year!  The “new” in this case are the pumpkins – only 100 days old instead of 100 years!

You can recreate this look too.  A paisley fabric, a dough bowl (reproduction or antique!), pumpkins, corn, and dried wheat stalks!

Here are my sources of what I know of (contains affiliate links)…

Country French Fall Home Tour 2016

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Hello!! Welcome to my Fall Home Tour for 2016!

I *LOVE* Fall and I am so excited to share my Fall home! Let’s have a look at the front porch, shall we?
This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

This year the front porch has some major style complete with a hay bale!  Hey, we are living in the country after all and actually grew hay on our land! Although, this is not our hay, but that’s okay (everything is rhyming right now).  I love the cinderella pumpkins stacked up! These are actually French pumpkins, Rouge Vif d’Etampes, and it is the pumpkin that inspired the artist to draw Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage.

Below, I put my MK Hunter boots out. I liked how they looked with the wreath on the front door with MK ribbon!  You can see my Fall Wreath tutorial here. The mums brighten up the porch, although with my brown thumb, they are likely going to die.  The little lion statue is vintage French!

When you come inside you see our dining table in the background… this year I had fun filling the antique dough bowl with white and blue pumpkins.

A sneak peek of the Fall tabelscape I created… the entire tablescape is saved for a post later this week!

Mr. Swan this year is more neutral in his decor.  The dried roses and eucalyptus have been there since Spring… I just really like how they look.  Some white mini boos surround him with some acorns.  Mr. Swan is made by Bavent Pottery which is located in France. The company has been around since 1842.

Into the living room… a little coffee table vignette with MK tray, tea set, and velvet pumpkins brighten up the room.  The fur pillow is actually there year round, but goes great with the Fall look!

In front of the fireplace is a Fall pillow.  Actually, I confess, it is just a table runner secured around a pillow.  Couldn’t find a table to use it on this year! My Fall fashion accessories are displayed for the photoshoot for fun!

Here is this year’s mantel.  It is a little simpler than last year… just a few of the odd shaped gourds that we all love!  The lavender the that was in my dough bowl earlier in the year is now in a Madeleine pot!

A closer look at the Fall mantel… love the fun gourds.  The candles are faux and light up at night on a timer!

New this year are these little scarecrow and witch figurines!  They are actually not Halloween, technically, they are part of a Wizard of Oz set .  I just bought these two of the set because I thought they would be perfect for Fall decor! You can find them here:  Scarecrow and Wicked Witch

In the corner of the room is a sneak peek at Halloween.  These two houses light up. The barn makes scary noises and the bats on the right house spin in a circle. My husband loves them!

Don’t you just love this purple Indian corn?

On another table is the sunnier side of Fall… fresh cut dahlias from my garden fill vases from Astier de Villate.  These are surrounded by vintage handkerchiefs.  Fall isn’t all about orange pumpkins!  In fact, you’ll notice inside the house I only had 1 orange real pumpkin! I actually hate the color orange… but the Fall porch is really the only place I use orange!

The velvet pumpkin vignette I blogged about last week is still up on the other side of the same room as the dahlias…

We end with a look at the scene on the kitchen island… my favorite owls are out again!  This year is a new Steiff teddy on the right, and a Fall candle is burning.  More on this scene is to come, just this post is already long enough!

I hope you enjoyed my little Fall home tour!  Thank you for stopping by and sharing one of my favorite seasons!

Back from Switzerland!

Yes, I am BACK from my trip to Switzerland. We also went to Germany, Austria, *AND* I added a new country to my country list… Liechtenstein!  I am sharing a few pictures from the trip with you all, I have also shared some on my Instagram if you follow along there too.

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

The country of Switzerland was beautiful and we were blessed with beautiful weather! It was forecasted to rain every day we were there but instead it was sunny and in the 80s and we were hot!  It was apparently the hottest September in 100 years there!

Below is the city of Lucerne!

Lucerne, Switzerland

Below is a picture from one of the hikes we went on! Isn’t it amazing?

Hiking above Murren in Switzerland

There were cows on the hiking trails! Some of them would stand in the way and you’d have to wait until they moved! All of the cows had bells on them… it was awfully cute hiking through the Alps hearing the jingle of the bells!

Swiss cows on our hike in Switzerland

One day we went to the top of one of the mountains in Switzerland!  This is the view we were treated to… a glacier! It is the longest glacier in the Alps!

I will be doing separate posts on the trip later… but I have so much I want to share for Fall it will probably be a few months, to be honest!

 Emmy Favorites

The Emmy’s were this past weekend, and while I didn’t watch the awards show, I did look at celebs wearing beautiful dresses! Here are my favorite looks from this year….

Instant caramel macchiato! I thought it was pretty awesome and wish we had some of these here in the USA! Have you ever seen them before?

Before I left for Europe, I went to the mall to find some clothes for the trip.  I spotted these items but didn’t buy them because they didn’t fit in my suitcase! BUT they are still on my wish list!

Decorating with Velvet Pumpkins and Velvet Corn

I *love* decorating with velvet pumpkins for Fall!  They are really quite photogenic and I love the beautiful jewel tone colors that they come in!  This year I was super excited to discover velvet corn!

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

Decorating with Velvet Pumpkins and Corn for Fall

Creating this Fall vignette was a little bit of an accident.  You see, I had an orchid in this old stone vase with Spanish moss and it died. So I was changing around my decor to find something to put in the vase when I noticed that the pumpkins looked pretty cute sitting next to the vase. So, I grabbed a few more and voila!

Decorating with Velvet Pumpkins and Corn for Fall

You could easily recreate this look at home. Simply find an old vase, arrange your velvet pumpkins, and add a little bit of Spanish moss. It goes well with the orange of the pumpkin!

Decorating with Velvet Pumpkins and Corn for Fall

I love the real dried stems on the pumpkins! I tried to pick the pumpkins with stems that were a little whimsical.  I also love the new corn with the Swarovski crystal kernels!  You can get the corn here and here.  I think it goes well with the pumpkins!

Decorating with Velvet Pumpkins and Corn for Fall

I still remember the first time I saw velvet pumpkins… they were in a little shop in Portland, Oregon in 2008.  I thought, wow, this is special! I didn’t know many years later they would be at Neiman Marcus!  You see, Hot Skwash is from Tigard, OR and I think the little shop was her first dealer.  Then it seemed came along Love Feast Shop online that is so popular with bloggers.  I don’t know if they are the same company or not? They are very similar to each other.   Although, I noticed the Love Feast shop doesn’t have velvet corn, so it makes me think they are different.  But they do both have velvet pumpkins, mushrooms, and acorns.

Decorating with Velvet Pumpkins and Corn for Fall

As you can see, I have quite a few pumpkins but they are all really little.  The smaller ones are a lot cheaper than the large ones! Do you have any velvet pumpkins?

DIY Fall Wreath Tutorial

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

I feel like I must be one of the last bloggers to make my own Fall wreath.  You see, I’m not super crafty.  But when my cheap-o one from last year fell apart, I started on my hunt for a new wreath.  I just could not find one that I liked in my price range.

So, I headed off to Hobby Lobby with coupons in my purse and started picking out faux branches.  I already had burlap ribbon at home plus I’ve had the Mackenzie Child ribbon for several years and hadn’t quite found the perfect project for it… until now!

DIY Fall Wreath tutorial with fall leaves, pumpkins, burlap, and Mackenzie Childs ribbon

Here are all of the materials I used:

1 grapevine wreath

Fall leave sprigs (enough to go around the wreath)

Fall gourds

Burlap ribbon

Mackenzie Childs Ribbon

Wire and Wire Cutters

When I started, I just picked one spot and started to place the leaf sprigs into the wreath. I secured it by wrapping the wire around it.

Then I added the gourds and other Fall sprigs around the wreath until I liked it.

Next came the hard part: making the bow. I struggled making this bow.  I searched for a good tutorial and this one by Susie Harris is the one I ended up following.  My Mom and I both made it together… you needed about four hands to hold it all!  We secured the Mackenzie Childs ribbon on top with hot glue.

And Voila! Here is the finished project! I think it looks pretty nice! I like it better than anything I saw in the stores and I especially love the black and white courtly check ribbon!  I wish I had bought the 2″ Mackenzie Child ribbon too! I used the 1″ ribbon.

Here is my image for pinning!!

This year I want to have a prettier porch for Fall.  I have turned to Pinterest and my some of my favorite blogs for inspiration. 13 porches as today is September 13!

13 Inspiring Fall Porch Decorating Ideas

First, I want to start with one of my all-item favorite porches, from Pottery Barn, of course…

source -Pottery barn

I LOVE Stone Gable’s use of tartan on her porch.

this one below is more Halloween like, but it’s fun!

source – Pottery Barn

I love the garland here.

I love the use of dried corn stalks.

source – I can’t find one! So sorry!

This color scheme is more monochromatic.

I like this one below with the fruit mixed in the garland.  I also think the green vines are real.

source – Peonies & Orange Blossoms

Here was the beginning of my Fall porch from last year… by the end of the season it was covered in pumpkins but unfortunately I did not take a picture. This picture is from when only a few of our pumpkin vines were reading for picking!

source – Still Woods Farmhouse

I like the corn stalks and the welcome sign!

Isn’t that fall arrangement on the left amazing?? I also like the wispy vines on the right.

Now, if only we all had a picture-perfect dog to pose for all of us!

If you are pinning, please pin from the original source.

What I noticed about these porches is that more is more!  I love that lots of pumpkins are used. I love the dried stalks and all the use of mums!

Peach Clafoutis Recipe

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again: we have peaches coming out of our ears. So that means I have been busy baking up a storm using all of the peaches!

Now, I have been wanting to try to make a clafoutis because it sounds so fancy.  It is pronounced kla-foo-tee.  But guess what? It is SUPER EASY to make.  I feel like the name is deceiving for that reason!

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

Now, for the recipe, I simply used Julia Child’s recipe from Mastering the Art of French Cooking.  She used other fruit but I substituted peaches. It was tasty!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups milk (I used 2%)
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 3 eggs
  • 1tbsp vanilla
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 3-4 ripe peaches, sliced

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F
  2. In a blender, blend the milk, 1/3 cup of sugar, eggs, vanilla, salt, and flour.
  3. Then, pour about a 1/4 inch layer of the matter into a lightly buttered baking dish (a cast iron pan works the best!). Place over heat for 2-3 minutes on the stove top until the batter sets up in the pan.
  4. Remove from the heat and then spread the peaches evenly over the batter.  Pour the remaining batter on top.  Sprinkle the remaining 1/3 cup sugar on top of that (I only sprinkled part of it as it seemed like a lot of sugar).
  5. Bake at 350F for 45 minutes to 1 hour.  The clafoutis is done when it is puffed and brown. Plunge a knife in the center and if it comes out clean you are down!
  6. Serve warm, sprinkled with powdered sugar.

If you have never had a clafoutis it is kind of like a pancake/flan batter with fruit cooked in the middle.

You can impress your friends by making this dish – it sounds so fancy but it is SO EASY to make that  a beginner could make it!

Strawberry Peach Crepes

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

This past Christmas I received a crepe pan and I was SOOOOO EXCITED to make crepes.  It took many tries to find a recipe that we liked the best, but then we finally found it!!

What I did now know when I received my crepe pan, is that my husband would turn out to be the master crepe maker as someone (*cough*me*cough*) likes to sleep in and misses the early morning preparation for crepes.

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

I’m including the basic crepe recipe that we use to make all of our crepes – the fillings we choose are usually just fruit simply cut up and served either with whipped cream, Nutella, yogurt sauce, or raspberry-cassis sauce.

Basic Crepe Recipe – makes 6 crepes

adapted from NYT cooking

Ingredients

1 1/4 cup low-fat milk

2 large eggs

1/4 tsp salt

1 tbsp (15g) granulated sugar

1/3 cup plus 1 tbsp (55g) all-purpose flour, sifted

1/3 cup plus 1 tbsp (55g) whole wheat flour, sifted

3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted, plus a little bit of butter for the pan

1 tsp final grated lime zest (or lemon)

Directions

1. In a blender, place the milk, eggs, salt, and sugar.  Turn on, and with the motor running, add the flours then the melted butter.  Then blend on high speed for 1 minute, until well-mixed and smooth.  Transfer this to a bowl, stir in the lime zest, cover, and let rest for 30 minutes.

2. To make the crepes, heat up the crepe pan over medium-high heat and brush lightly with butter.  Pan must be hot when you add the crepe batter.

3. Give your batter a quick whisk before you use it now. Then, lift the pan off the heat and add approx. 1/4 cup batter, just thin enough to evenly coat the bottom of the pan. Tilt and swirl pan to distribute evenly.

4. Return pan to heat and cook crepe for about 1 minute until the edges color and the crepe bottom is lightly browned. It should not stick to the pan. Flip crepe over and cook for another 30 seconds or so on the other side, until speckled.

5. Place crepe onto a plate and continue with the remaining batter, adding butter occasionally to the pan if desired.

6. Crepes are best served at their hottest, so assemble one by one.

7. Here, we cut up fresh strawberries and peaches. The proper way to serve the crepe is to fold it in half, then fold it in half again, so you end up with a quarter triangle like below.  We filled this one with strawberries, peaches, and whipped cream!

8. Crepes can be made ahead and reheated in 250 degree oven for 20 minutes. (I have not personally tried this)

What we found when making our crepes was that for some reason the first crepe that comes off the pan is always wonky and stupid and we always throw it away. I don’t know why, but it just seems to be the case.

A note on crepe pans…

You don’t HAVE to use a crepe pan to make crepes, but I figured that it must be better made on a crepe pan otherwise they would have never invented such a thing. The key to a crepe pan is having the heat evenly distributed.

Now, this is the crepe pan that we use (by Staub) and we LOVE it. It is cast iron which evenly distributes heat.

This copper crepe pan of course is a winner but it is nearly twice the price as the one we have.

This one from De Buyer is only $25 and can be used on induction cooktops.

What to Pack to Switzerland

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

I’m headed to Switzerland this September and I am SOOOO excited!! I went to Zurich once, only for a few hours, but this time we are spending more time in the country.  We are going to be doing some light hiking in the Berner Oberland!

Now, I have checked the temperature averages and it seems it gets pretty cool there in the night time – I mean, we *are* staying in the Swiss Alps so of course it is going to be chilly.

I am going to be dressing in layers and also I have an outfit for hiking.

What to pack and wear to Switzerland

Coat – I am bringing a waterproof jacket. I am still debating between my Barbour jacket and my North Face Rain Trench. I also have this North Face Venture Jacket too to chose from!

Fleece Pull-over – this Patagonia fleece pullover is so warm.. it will be perfect for walks in the evening and for hiking. We will be walking next to a glacier one of the days! I also have this North Face one.

Hats – Like I said, we are staying in the Alps and I get cold! I am loving these hats: Barefoot Dreams Slouch Beanie ,  embellished beanie  Fur Pom Ribbed Wool Beanie, and this cute Wool Beanie Hat With Bow.

Gloves – I don’t like cold fingers. I’m bringing gloves. These are cute Bow Glove . These Knitted Glove  are a good deal.  These Tech Gloves are for those who are glued to their phones – you can still wear them AND text on your phone!

Sunglasses – There is a lot of glare up in the mountains, so look stylish with some sunglasses. I like these Tory Burch, and these Ray-Ban ‘Original Aviator’

Backpack for Hiking – You need to carry a backpack while hiking so you can store your hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, camera, and snacks! I like these Northface one and two

Hiking Pants – Well, you need hiking pants for your hikes! I like these Kuhl Pant or Columbia Trail Pant  I also like wearing these Zella Leggings  and these adidas Pants

Hiking Boots – Hiking boots are a must for hiking in the mountains. Regular tennis shoes just don’t have the same amount of grip or support in them. I bought these ones by Ahnu and I really want these ones by these ones by Danner .

Scarves – Europeans love their scarves! This one is cute :Plaid Wool Scarf, I love my Burberry Scarf

This Plaid Fringe Scarf is a good deal.

Purse for Travel – I love either a cross body bag or a bag that folds down into nothing.  This Crossbody Bag is super cute, this Crossbody Bag is a deal ($39!) as is this Crossbody Bag .  I LOVE my little Longchamp Le Pliage Tote Bag.

Umbrella – A little travel umbrella is super useful in a place where it rains a lot!  I like this Polka Dot Travel Umbrella and this  Lightweight Mini Umbrella.

Jeans – Jeans are a must. I am wearing black jeans and Skinny Jeans. TheseStretch Skinny Jeans  are one of my faves and they are $68 and look great!

Cardigans – Layering is key when dressing in the Spring and Fall in climates like Switzerland where it is chilly at night but nice in the day.  Here are the cardigans I have my eyes on: Oversized Knitted Cardigan,Long-sleeved wool and cashmere knit cardiganLightweight V-Neck Cardigan, Drape Front Wool & Cashmere Cardigan.

Sunscreen – the glare on the mountains is strong and the elevation is higher. You will get sunburned if you aren’t careful, so I wear this Clinique Sunscreen.

Other Shoes – I love my Chloé ‘Flat – perfect for dressing up for dinner or walking around.  I also bring an extra pair of tennis shoes – my Converse  are my go to and Europeans always ask me where I got them!

Shirts – this basic V-Neck Tee  is my go to.  I LOVE wearing tunics – here are my favorites ones: Tunic – plain colors. Stripe Split Hem Tunic. This one is a little dressier: Long-SleeveTunic.  Also I am loving plaid shirts this year, especially for the Fall. I like this ‘Ex Boyfriend Plaid’ Cotton Shirt , this  Plaid Button Front Shirt, and this Plaid Tunic Shirt(only $44)!

A Dress – I am bringing a silk dress this year because one of the hotels we are staying at is a little fancy and you have to wear nicer clothes.  I am choosing this Sleeveless Silk Shift Dress  because it folds up small, is wrinkle resistant, and I can also wear leggings under if it I wanted.  This  Silk Crepe De Chine Shirt Dress is a nice pick too!

I am SO EXCITED to go to Switzerland! It seems to be so picturesque! I am hoping it doesn’t rain the whole time we are there!  We are going to places like this…

 and this…

 and this…
