Romantic French Country Pink Tablescape for Valentine’s Day!

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Today I am sharing this romantic French Country Tablescape in Pink for Valentine’s Day!

I am in love with the color pink right now and this Valentine’s Day table reflects that!

For this table I used my tulipiere as my centerpiece. It is framed by antique candlesticks, mercury glass candle holders, and bud vases.

The fresh eucalyptus branches add a nice touch. I love these little bud vases – I will never get sick of them!

For this Valentine’s Day pink look, I was going for an ombre effect on the tulipiere with tulips and spray roses.

My favorite part of this table is how it looks at night with the candles glowing!

The pink mercury glass candle holders were from my wedding! We had them on all of the tables just like above and it was so pretty at night!

The bud vases look so cute with the tulips in them!

I did not set the plates and silverware out just yet… but we have been dining here! It takes an ordinary meal to an elegant one if you dine by candlelight!

Meyer Lemon Tart

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.
One of the things I love most about living in California is the ability to walk out to our garden and pick fresh citrus during the middle of Winter!
We have a Meyer lemon tree and it is *wonderful*.

Meyer Lemon Tart

Last year I attempted to make this tart and it was a fail. We didn’t properly plan for a freeze and the lemons were ruined. I tried to use them anyway and it just did not work.

This year though… we prepared for the freeze. So, this tart is a year in the making!

Tart dough (recipe from David Leibovitz, I recommend reading his recipe on his site – it’s funny)

90 g (3 ounces) unsalted butter, cut into pieces

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

3 tablespoons water

1 tablespoon sugar

1/8 teaspoon salt

150 g (5oz, or 1 slightly-rounded cup) flour

  1. Preheat the oven to 410º F
  2. In a medium-sized ovenproof bowl, combine the butter, oil, water, sugar, and salt.
  3. Place the bowl in the oven for 15 minutes, until the butter is bubbling and starts to brown just around the edges.
  4. When done, remove the bowl from oven (and be careful, since the bowl will be hot and the mixture might sputter a bit), dump in the flour and stir it in quickly, until it comes together and forms a ball which pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  5. Transfer the dough to a 9-inch (23 cm) tart mold with a removable bottom and spread it a bit with a spatula OR transfer the dough to your mini tart pans. It doesn’t matter the size of your tart pans. Save a raspberry size piece of dough and set it aside.
  6. Once the dough is cool enough to handle, pat it into the shell with the heel of your and, and use your fingers to press it up the sides of the tart mold.
  7. Prick the dough all over with the tines of a fork about ten times, then bake the tart shell in the oven at 410F for 15 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven and if there are any sizable cracks, use the bit of reserved dough to fill in and patch them.
  9. I find it best to pinch off a small amount of the reserved dough, roll it gently between your fingers to soften it, then wedge it into the cracks, smoothing it gently with your pinky.
  10. Let the shell cool before filling.

Lemon Cream from Pierre Herme

200 g whole eggs (which is about 4 eggs)
240 g granulated sugar
160 g fresh squeezed Meyer lemon juice
zest from about 4-5 lemons
300 g unsalted butter, room temperature and cubed (I used 1 1/2 sticks butter which is less)

  1. Rub the zest with the sugar using your finger until the sugar is moistened with the lemon zest.
  2. Next, preferably on a double boiler, combine the sugar, eggs and the lemon juice.
  3. Whisk constantly until the mixture reaches about 185F. You must do continue stirring as this keeps the eggs from scrambling.
  4. Strain the mixture into the blender and let cool to about 155F.
  5. In the blender, add the butter a couple of pieces at a time.  The mixture will lighten in color as you blend.. Continue running the blender for several minutes until it is light in color and airy.
  6. Pour the mixture into prepared crust and refrigerate.
  7. Served cooled. Tastes best served the same day.

I reduced the amount of butter for the lemon cream by almost a stick and I couldn’t even tell…

I think that it made it a bit more tart compared to the original (had the original in Paris!)

This tart was nice and refreshing. It is nice balance of tartness and sweetness. I do suggest using Meyer lemons and not substituting for “regular” lemons.

Wall Mounted Faucets in the Powder Room

For my regular readers, you may have noticed that I have not written about our French farmhouse building progress in a while.  This is mainly because there was delay after delay and I was becoming very unexcited about the whole thing.  No one seemed to be in a hurry, so why should I?

Well things have finally progressed, ground has moved, etc. It is quite boring to post pictures of concrete and framing.  So instead, let’s look at wall mounted faucets for the powder room.
This post may contain affiliate links.

source chateau domingue

My powder room will have two sconces next to a mirror.  I wanted the space to feel luxurious as it is one the guests would use the most.

I debate about a vessel sink, haven’t quite decided yet.

source zillow

I suppose it depends on the cabinet.

source dreamy whites blog

I love all of these different inspiration photos!

source Jenkins interiors

Now, I have to find a vanity for the powder room.  I like the cabinets below but they are not bathroom vanities! I considered turning them into bathroom vanities but they are too tall! I would LOVE to find one that is similar but in a vanity!

Let’s look at some of the faucets…
There were the ones that I was looking at.

But I like this aged brass one below

And then This one below; but it is more modern and simple.

This one below too is nice.

We ended up choosing the first one in unpolished brass. I hope I like how it ages!

Do you know of a company besides Restoration Hardware that sells French or Swedish looking bathroom vanities? If so, leave me a comment!!

SO I am so excited because I just discovered that two of my favorite companies have partnered together to create a limited edition line for Valentine’s Day!

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

Diptyque, a wonderful French fragrance house, and Antoinette Poisson, a French creator and restorer of domino paper have partnered and created this luscious line of products! I wrote about Antoinette Poisson here in a post.

a limited edition domino -sold out.
Alright, the scent below is Rosamundi. Here is the description of the candle: This candle offers a pairing of the two most exquisite roses used in perfumery: Damascena, the Damask rose, and Centifolia, the May rose. They are celebrated for the variety and richness of their scents; a story is told as they bloom. In the top note, currant and bergamot provide freshness, the lychee’s fruitiness complements their petals, and the geranium enhances their naturalness.

If you like the Baies candle or like rose candles, you will love this one! Get the 2.4oz candle, or the larger  6.5oz candle

Next is a Multi Use SprayA rare eau with many applications, scenting both skin and fabric. Its scent has the natural grace of rose, the freshness of foliage and a slight, almost undetectable trace of patchouli. To scent fabrics, spray the Eau Dominotée at a distance.
I bought this and it is WONDERFUL! It smells so nice!

The is a perfect gift for Valentine’s Day: the Eau Rose Travel Perfume in limited edition packaging. If you like rose perfumes than this one will be your favorite!

I totally have an obsession with this French fragrance house. I love all of their products. They even had limited edition scented papers for your linen drawers but they have sold out.

Victoria Tv Show

Did you start watching the Victoria tv show on PBS which premiered this past weekend? If not, it’s not too late to start watching this season!
Well, here is my first review.
It’s hard not to compare it to the Crown given that they both are period pieces about English Queens!
The Crown was better in every way, however, that being said, I really enjoyed Victoria and if you like period tv dramas (Downton Abbey, the Crown, Outlander, Mr. Selfridge) then you will like this show!
It follows the life of Queen Victoria. The costumes and sets are beautiful, however the Queen seems so much more childish than Queen Elizabeth – and perhaps she was!

A Christopher Peacock Kitchen and Ice Box Hardware

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Let’s talk about kitchens.

I have to make some choices regarding my entire kitchen soon.  I have actually saved these pictures for months but decided to turn to them again recently as the housing project moves along.

We went to the Christopher Peacock showroom and I fell in love with the scullery kitchen.

I really liked the kitchen hood.

This post may contain affiliate links.

I like the little shelf on the hood where I can put stuff (I can imagine some Christmas greenery there…).  I like the panels on it. I also like how the spices are immediately next to the range, but are hidden if you look at it head on.

I snuck in quite a few pictures…

The big stone and metal hoods I don’t think are for me and will clash with my stone fireplace.

I like the ice box handles a lot – great in earthquake country!

Also, I liked seeing the natural wood behind the glass doors.  This reminds me of my kitchen that my Opa built for my Mom back in the day – he had exposed wood behind the cabinet *just like* the picture below.

Now, I confess I do not think the wood island is practical at all and would not copy that for my kitchen.

I love the X bars on these cabinets.

I have been in constant debate with myself about hardware and cabinet colors.  We will have wood floors so I have decided to paint the cabinets so they won’t clash.

I will likely paint them in some sort of cream color.

Now the question is – brass vs oil rubbed bronze vs polished nickel?!?

I love the warmth of the brass, but wonder, is it just a trend?

Oh, and I LOVE these linen baskets that are built in – aren’t they clever??

But, I have included a few other kitchens of his that have polished nickel.

Aren’t these chandeliers fun? Anyway, we’re looking at cabinet hardware, not chandeliers!

Hmm, still don’t know about which color to choose… but what I do know, is that I want icebox latches for the uppers!

Now, I found some copycat ice box hardware.  The first one is from Rejuvenation Hardware here.  The next one seems to be the most similar and is from Cliffside Industries.

Easy Hike in Switzerland in the Bernese Oberland

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

For those of you that regularly follow my blog, you may know that I visited Switzerland in the Fall of 2016.  I have not yet had a chance to write about my trip because I love writing about Fall and Christmas decorating.

Now, though, in the middle of Winter, I thought it would be a perfect time to write about my trip!

When I first was researching about my trip I was a little iffy about hiking in the Swiss alps because I was unsure of how good of shape one needs to be in to go hiking in the Alps!

Well, I can tell you that there are some easier hikes in the Alps for those of us who aren’t hardcore hikers!

For this hike, we got off the train that goes to the top of the Jungfraujoch at the station Eigergletscher.

We started our hike here, below.  We were treated to spectacular views of the mountains and glaciers!

From the Eigergletscher, we hiked down to Kleine Scheidegg.  Below, the train leave us.  In this direction of the hike, we are looking towards the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Kleine Scheidegg is a main train station and a place with hotels, bathrooms, and restaurants.

From there, we continued on our hike and made our way to Männlichen.  This part of the hike I believe is called the Panorama Weg.  It seems most people were hiking the opposite way as us – our tour books recommended going from Männlichen to Kleide Scheidegg because it was mostly downhill – however we went the opposite direction.

The reason we went the opposite direction is because we went to the top of the Jungfraujoch in the morning (the mornings are the best weather), and then hiked our way back down. We combined several hikes. Eigergletscher to Kleide Scheidegg and then Kleide Scheidegg to Männlichen.

There were only a few parts on the Panorama Weg that I thought were a little hard going uphill, but it was only for about 10-15 minutes of the hike. Just take your time.

We were treated to beautiful views and beautiful weather.  This hike took us longer than projected due to us pausing constantly to take in the view.

And also we had little Schockolade (that means “chocolate” in German) breaks as there are benches along the way to sit and enjoy the views.

Here we crossed over babbling brooks and enjoyed a Schockolade break.

I may have been singing The Hills are Alive along this hike.

As you can see, the trail is fairly wide.  This part of the hike was relatively flat. You can see in the distance one of the glaciers that we were at!

Our hotel was in that valley a mile below!

Here is one of the benches along the trail.  And, you really do hike next to the cows!

I still cannot believe we were hiking in such a beautiful place!

Here is the cable car from Männlichen back to Grindelwald. It drops over 1 mile in elevation.  I did *not* enjoy this cable car ride back down. I have a total phobia of heights.  But I sucked it up and closed my eyes (okay and then opened them and proceeded to look out with sweaty palms until we made it back down!).

If you have a fear of heights, as I do, I say, suck it up, close your eyes, and then open them and look out! This is a beautiful place that should be visited. I overcame my fear of cable cars and gondolas to go hiking here! Okay, never mind, I still am afraid of them, but I would get on one again if I am treated to this view!

Above is a picture from our hike the next day.  What was neat is that you could see exactly where we had hiked!

I *strongly* recommend this hike.  You don’t have to do the Eigergletscher – Kleide Scheidegg, as it is way harder (although hiking down was easier), but I *strongly* recommend the Männlichen-Kleide Scheidegg hike, which was the second half our our hike.

Most of the tour books recommended taking the cable car to Männlichen, then hike to Kleide Scheidegg and then taking the train up to the Jungfraujoch.

I recommend instead getting up super early, going to the Jungfraujoch in the early morning when it is most likely to be clear so the views are the best, and then getting off the train early and hiking just like we did above!

Below is the hiking map that is all over the place when you visit the region.  Make sure you study this before you go!

I thought this hike was reasonably easy and not too difficult, granted there were some places I huffed and puffed!!  Although you should consult your physician before hiking at elevation in the Alps if you have health conditions!

A French Blue and White Tablescape

Remember earlier when I said I had the post-holiday blues?

I wasn’t kidding.

So this blue and white tablescape seemed appropriate for my mood.

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

I haven’t put together a blue and white table before, so this was nice and refreshing.

The china is Juliska Country Estate and Colette in blue.

The vases are filled with white roses, blue thistles, and variegated geranium leaves.

I really liked these blue thistle stems.  Don’t they look cute in my little bud vase from Astier de Villate (hauled it from Paris!).

The table cloth is antique Point de Venise.  We put the lace table cloth on top of some blue velvet fabric! It really allows you to appreciate the fine work on it!

Some antique cut glass candlesticks add glamour!

Oh, about the candles-  they are no drip! When I burn them, they don’t make a big ol’ mess like my other candles. I found them at Home Goods.

I liked this picture from above- it shows the pretty table cloth!

Putting together this table, even though no one is coming over, has lifted my mood.  The flowers are so pretty.

Do you ever set the table just for yourself?

What I like about the Juliska ceramic dinnerware is that they are microwave, oven, freezer, and dishwasher safe!

The shoes are all over celebrities and every fashion blogger out there.

They are made of leather and lined with kangaroo (?!) and cost $$$.

Below, Jennifer Aniston is just many of the celebrities wearing the shoe, but she is wearing the non-kangaroo version.

The non-kangaroo fur version below. I love this shoe!

They make all sorts of different versions of the shoe, but again, very pricey.

Breaking Ornaments while packing away Christmas

I don’t know about you all, but we have been busy putting away Christmas this week. It is not nearly as fun taking it down as it was putting it up!

This was also the year of the broken ornament. The broken ornament count is up to 5! I have not broken an ornament for years while taking my decorations this down and I don’t know what it is this year but FIVE is a lot.
