In this post: Antique Porcelain Flowers from Vincennes/Sevres and Meissen

April showers bring May (porcelain) flowers!

Aren’t they beautiful?

Even if you aren’t into antiques or porcelain, you can at least appreciate the beauty of these! They are all handmade and painted.

Vincennes Blue Celeste

This exquisite piece sold at auction for nearly $150k! It is from the 1750s.

Vincennes (now Sevres) was one of the first factories in France to make soft-paste porcelain. They specialized in making these beautiful flowers.

Below, sold at auction for $18,500.

Sevres

Below, several beautiful clocks with flowers adorning them.

Don’t you love this one with the animals?

Buckinghamshire Antiques

Oh how I would love to have one of these, wouldn’t you?

 I love them all!

Now, the Madame de Pompadour loved porcelain.  She is known to have purchased many porcelain flowers.

There is a story I read that she once received the king in a room full of porcelain flowers that emitted perfume!

Who knows what is true from history and what is not, but let’s just pretend.

The one below is Meissen.

You know what though…

People are still making them today! They are so beautiful. Not as ornate as the antique ones, but I doubt these cost 20K!

Let us end by admiring the remarkable Sunflower Clock!

Yes, it is a clock but is so incredibly beautiful, if you have a few minutes of time I encourage you to watch this video about the restoration of it just so you can see how pretty these are close-up!

How to Make a Mood Board for Your Room

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Today I am going to give you a well-known trade secret on how to create a perfect room for your house!

Creating a moodboard for your room creates a better sense of how the finished room will look.

It is what designers have been doing for ages – and you can do it yourself too!

STEP 1-SCHEME AWAY

If you have no idea where to start, I suggest browsing Pinterest.  Create a board on Pinterest for your room and just start pinning away to that board. I liked French bedrooms, so I started by searching for French bedrooms.
Today I’m looking at my master bedroom, so here is my  bedroom board.
A quick glance at my board shows that I am drawing to spa blues and neutral colors. I also love French beds and coronas.
Another option is to look through your favorite home decor magazines and rip out pictures of your favorite rooms and put them in a folder.  Then go back through and decide on the elements you like the best and emulate it!

source
source

source

STEP 2- MAKE A LIST

Make a list of furniture, lighting, and rugs that you already have and are going to use in that room. I suggest taking pictures of all of these pieces and printing them out.

Now you can sort of the pieces you already have, the pieces you need, and the pieces you need to get rid of (good bye matchy matchy bedset that you bought when you were newlyweds but 5-10-20-30 years later you don’t like it anymore – get rid of it!)

STEP 3 – MAKE A BOARD

There are several ways to make a mood board.
Olioboard is an easy online service that’s free where you can design your own mood boards.
All you do is start searching for your product in the categories and then add it in. If you don’t find what you are looking for, you can upload pictures under the “my items” tab.

You can do the same thing with other programs too – I personally prefer Photoshop but Olioboard is free and easier to use than photoshop.

Although I confess I like the old-fashioned way and use poster boards, scissors, and tape.

Below is my actual mood-board. It doesn’t look as pretty as the virtual mood board, but it is easier for me to actual design all of the rooms this way.

I prefer to look at the textures and colors in person – fabrics look different in person and you can really appreciate the textures in real life.  Having mood boards in person as opposed to online helps tremendously!

Then, with the pictures I took of all of my furniture, I am able to move the pieces around on the various boards!

This method is easier when designing multiple rooms in the house because you can easily move items around onto the different boards.

You can mix and match your fabrics, floors, etc with mood boards.

Mood boards are a fantastic way to organize your thoughts, save you time, and even save you money.

I’ve got some housing updates for you for the month of April…

French Empire Chandeliers

For our dining room, I want to have a French empire style chandelier.

Yes it is formal and I love it!

We are wiring the house this week and I have been busy looking at lighting!

I have rounded up a few chandeliers I have been looking at.

Obviously the Home Depot one is the cheapest BUT it is not crystal. Sigh.

Staring at all of these chandeliers has me thinking of the Phantom of the Opera.

So I’ve been humming the tunes from that in my head as I stare at these lights!

Kitchen Faucets

We purchased our kitchen faucets! I debated and debated about what finish to go with and ultimately chose polished nickel.

Rohl

And the day before we ordered the faucets I had a dream about a pot filler. I previously said I didn’t want one but then I had a dream about it and decided I was going to go for it – perfect timing, the next day the plumber was able to plumb it in and we ordered it in the knick of time!

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray Review

Okay I need to talk about my new favorite beauty product.

It is Oribe (no idea how you pronounce it!) texturizing spray!

If you want your hair to have some volume that I *highly* recommend this spray.

I debated about buying it for years because of its price tag…

but I bit the bullet and bought the travel size to test it out…

and I LOVE IT!

It made my hair have so much volume – like way more than any other product ever.

Oh, did I mention it smells amazing?

Full size, travel size or get it on Amazon.

I also bought the Oribe Beach Wave and Shine spray.

Louis Vuitton Masters Collection

Louis Vuitton and Jeff Koons teamed up and created this collection based on the masters’ artworks.

My favorite one is the Van Gogh, which one is your favorite? (should you have an unlimited budget?)

(all pictures from Louis Vuitton)

A bunch of celebrities showed up for the opening and posed with the bags…

And here’s my favorite shot…

Cate Blanchett, posing with…. an empty stand. Yeah, where’s the bag?!

This is cracking me up!

She looks a little upset about that too.

And with that, I’m out.

Have a happy weekend!

French Country Spring Table Setting

I love Spring – it is one of my favorite times of year!  This year I had so much fun at the flower market picking out flowers for this table.

Recently I have been drawn to the color orange – I wrote about that here in my coral/persimmon inspiration post. I think it is because the orange makes blue look even better!

I love using my tulipiere.

It is such an usual vase.

The tulipiere is filled with three different colors of ranunculus and two-toned tulips.

Little sprigs of Muscari finish the look and their bright blue goes so well with the oranges and peach colors!

I took a hundred pictures. I couldn’t stop snapping.

Snap snap snap.

The pink goblets are vintage French.

The blue plate and goblet are Juliska.

I found these in the drawer and forgot I had them – oops, should have used them for the Easter table!

Oh well, this is a Spring table and let me tell you – we have *hundreds* of rabbits around here.

Jack rabbits – not the cute fluffy kind.

These rabbits have snaggle teeth and huge pointy ears – and boy can they run!

Yah… run into my garden and eat it if the fence gate is open!

Snap snap snap.

I wish the flowers would stay like this forever and not wilt.

About these tea light candle holders – they were bronze in color but we painted them years ago. I try to envision again how they look in bronze.

The table cloth goes nicely with the pinks and blues!

The table cloth is antique.  It is a Madeira table cloth.  It is made of organdy, applique, and embroidery.

Snap snap snap.

Don’t you love the blue with the orange? J’adore.

Ok maybe I should have edited this post and taken one of these photos out.

But I can’t. I love them all.

This table is perfect for the Spring – but could easily convert to a Fall table with changing of the table cloth and the candle holders!

This week was one of my cousin’s bridal shower and so I have weddings on the brain.

When I was looking through the posts I realized there are some great ideas here that would be perfect for a bridal shower!

First, let’s set up the party:

The Turquoise Home has this fabulous wooden box tutorial which would serve as a great centerpiece for the table or a buffet/serving table!

Old Time Pottery has a pretty lemon centerpiece with moss table number tutorial. Great for parties with multiple tables!

Simple Nature Decor threw a Moroccan inspired tea party – I thought it was a fun spin on the traditional tea party and so perfect for the nicer weather!

Now for the Menu…

Blood Orange Gin and Tonics from The Kittchen.

And a non-alcoholic option of a fruit frappe from Live Like You’re Rich.

Next, for side dishes…

A beautiful spinach and citrus salad from  Pink Peppermint Design.

Orzo with black olives and asparagus from Home Cooking Memories.

For your main dish, how about a spinach quiche with artichokes and red peppers from a Dish of Daily Life.

And for dessert…

A blueberry tart with lemon marscapone cream from DelightfulEMade.

and to finish, a lemon raspberry cheesecake from All That Jas.

Also, this week I shared a tutorial on how to make a bloom box which is PERFECT for a bridal shower or birthdays!

How to Make a Flower Bloom Box

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

In this post: A DIY tutorial on how to make a flower bloom box.

Recently I have been obsessing over the flower bloom boxes.

They are floral arrangements in boxes as opposed to vases.

I think I have been drawn to them because I love boxes (seriously, I can’t seem to be able to throw away a box. I even collect cute boxes just because they are just that – cute boxes).

I have been spying on these bloom boxes all over the internet.

They are loved by the rich and the famous – the bottom left hot pink roses are from the Kardashians.

But since they cater to the rich and the famous – they come with a price.

So I thought, I could make one myself!

I bought this pink and gold Sugar Paper box at Target during the Christmas season that was all over the internet.  I knew I had to have it – but then I didn’t quite know what to do with it.

I had a light bulb moment and thought oh! I’ll make a bloom box with it!

Materials Needed

Pretty box of your choice

Oasis Floral Foam

A container liner of your choice so your box doesn’t get wet

Flowers (*a note about flowers later)

Directions

1. Here I used a round box and placed a glass bowl inside of it.

 2. Cut the floral foam to fit inside and wet it with water. You may need to add more water because the foam will soak it up.

 3. Start poking in your filler flower if using several different types of flowers.  Here I used a hydrangea and cut the blooms off into smaller pieces like below.  I then worked my way around the edges making sure to cover up the edge of the box/bowl.

 4. Next, I poked in one full hydrangea to cover up the center, but you could use whatever flowers you would like nice to cover the center.

 5. Just keep adding until a majority of the green is hidden.

 6. Next start adding in your other flowers until you are satisfied with the overall look!

6. Arrange and take a picture because you are all done!

I told you it was easy!

*A note on flowers: if you are using the same type of flowers, just make sure on the edges you have the flowers cover up the edge of the box.  I chose to do a mixture of flowers.

Having three types of flowers is ideal: filler (hydrangea), focal flower (ranunculus), secondary flower (sweet peas).

Generally flower arrangements have a base of greenery too but most of the bloom boxes do not have greenery.

Choosing flowers of similar hues makes for a nice statement – or you could always choose your statement flower in a bold complimentary color.

I think I like the bloom box so much is because it is like you are opening a present but then the present is actually flowers!

See what a I mean! Looks like a present!

What do you think of the bloom box?

I’m in love with them.

In this post: Easter Entertaining Ideas – a Sweets and Treats Bar.

Easter Entertaining Ideas

Easter is just around the corner and I know that many of us enjoy Easter sweets and treats!

So I came up with this cute little Easter entertaining bar.

It is so easy for you to replicate at home.

All you need is some lemonade or drink of your choice, a variety of sweets and some Easter decorations!

I used a cake stand and a hat box to display some of my treats.

A chocolate bunny (although he is faux) sits at the top, but Lindt sheep and rabbits are dancing below him!

I made some raspberry and orange blossom macarons.  Click for their respective recipes.

I set them on an Easter plate.  An antique French plate serves as a dramatic back drop.

The glasses are on the table, but you can have some tasty pink citrus lemonade.  Some vintage linens in Easter colors are here to catch your dribbles!

More Easter treats sprinkle the table…

I just love how cute Easter chocolate is! Every year I buy Lindt chocolate.
