Not all Halloween decorating needs to be spooky or scary! Here I am sharing how I decorated for Halloween this year. First I have my tiered tray, with whimsical pumpkin figures, candy corn, faux pumpkins. Game of Thrones fans might notice Jon Snow mouse. Antique fans may notice the Clapsaddle pumpkin child on the bottom.

The tiered tray is flanked by Lori Mitchell witches. I love Lori Mitchell and want to collect them all! But I have decided to limit myself to witches only.

The little Mickey and Minnie pumpkin village catches the eye of the child. My daughter loves it! There are from Department 56. I think they are pretty cute too.

In the kitchen I have some nutcrackers out for Oktoberfest with Fall leaves and pumpkins. The leaves and pumpkins will be changed into Christmas decor soon in the next few weeks and the nutcrackers will remain out!

Happy Halloween! This year my Halloween dining room was inspired by Harry Potter.

Velvet mushrooms and moody candles sit on the table. I was inspired by Hagrid’s hut with the critters and mushrooms.

This year’s Halloween table features a spooky cauldron brewing potions. Steam is bubbling out of the cauldron on top of a little fire.

I made the potion bottles a few years ago. You can print off the exact labels I made in this post.

The table looks really cool at nighttime!

In keeping with the haunted apothecary theme from the mantle, my table centerpiece has eery black candles and apothecary jars filled with herbs and baubles.

A direct comparison of night and day. I got the apothecary jars here at Amazon – frankly they are the best price I’d seen and came in a set of 3. I’m excited to use theme for the various holidays.

The candles and candle holders I got at Hobby Lobby – Pottery Barn had similar ones but I got these for a deal and frankly I think the entire purchase was cheaper than one at Pottery Barn!

Deciding which potion to brew? You can study magical water plants from the Mediterranean or a potion book, below.

Although I wrote about my Halloween mantel here, I couldn’t resist photographing here at night time with the cauldron lights glowing.

The cat is also brewing her own potion. I found her at Home Goods this year.

Wishing you all a Happy Halloween!

The candy corn in the middle tier is actually a coaster… isn’t it fun? Instead of a Halloween tree, I put my Halloween ornaments on the tray instead.

Welcome to the haunted apothecary!

You can pick your potions or brew your own! Make sure you have your wand and cauldron ready!

The cauldron is heated up for you already on the fire.

You may use your standard potion making book – follow the instructions carefully.

For my mantel I made all of my own potion bottles. It was a fun project using my imagination!

I was inspired by Harry Potter for this mantle, as you may be able to tell by the “fantastic beasts book”, the wand (from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter), and some of the names of the ingredients in my potion bottles.

Not all Halloween decor has to be grotesque, as I’ve demonstrated here with this mantle!

Below are the apothecary labels I made. You are welcome to download them and use them for yourself if you would like.

To make the potion bottles, I used the labels below. I printed them on standard printer paper. I then soaked the paper in black tea (make a pot of black tea, pour it into a casserole dish, and then put the paper in.). Let them soak for about 10 minutes, or until you get the desired color. Using Modge Podge, I attached them to the bottles. I filled the bottles with clear Elmer’s glue and various glitters, food dye, and things I found around the house.

  • Cheez-Its

  • Cheerios (specifically maple cheerios)
  • cheese popcorn
  • candy corn

You can mix in whatever various snacks you want though! Just choose a blend of sweet and salty – that’s what makes it good!

I’ve decorated my tiered tray for Halloween! If you follow me on Instagram, then you would have seen this picture already!

Sitting next to the tray are some folk art Halloween figurines.  I love this cat pulling the little witch in the pumpkin cart!

Halloween Tiered Tray #halloweendecor

I had intended to do a Halloween tree this year.  I bought a silver feather/tinsel tree last year.  But my cat really loved the tree.  She would bite it and attack it. So it had to come down – don’t worry, there was nothing breakable on it.  But I had a few glass Halloween ornaments.  So instead I put them here!

Halloween Tiered Tray #halloweendecorating

I also used a glass Halloween garland I found at Homegoods this year. Now on this side of the tray, you can see evil spell books on the bottom tier. More ornaments are scattered about.  There are velvet pumpkins and corn sprinkled in.  I also love this wicked witch figurine too.

I have four little Halloween figurines total. This is the last one, and the newest.  I love her flying over the moon!

A full look at the “back” side of the tray.  It’s only the back because the spooky cat is facing the other way.  I love the little scarecrow ornament!

I do hope you enjoyed my little Halloween tray and have been inspired for your own trays.  Happy Halloween!

A Halloween Dessert – Chausson aux Pommes

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Every year I make a Halloween dessert and this year is no exception!

Halloween Desserts - Jack O'Lantern Apple Pies

I made these little Jack O Lantern Chausson aux Pommes.  Don’t know what a Chausson aux Pommes is? It is a French apple turnover.  In fact in France, sometimes I eat a Chausson aux Pommes for breakfast instead of my usual croissant!

Halloween Desserts - Jack O'Lantern Apple Pies

For the recipe – this made four but it could have made one or two more as these were pretty big.

  • 1-2 sweet apples, such as honey crisp, gala, fuji but granny smith would probably work too Peeled, cored and think sliced.
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 heaping tbsp of granulated sugar (use more or less depending on how tart your apple is)
  • 1 dash of nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 sheets of frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg
1. In a frying pan on medium heat, melt the butter.  Then add the apples and cook until softened, about 5.
2. Sprinkle the sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg in the apples and stir, continue cooking for 1 more minute. Remove apple mixture from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
3. While the apples are cooling, preheat the oven to 400F.
4. Create an egg wash by mixing one egg with 1 tbsp water. Set aside.
5. Roll your puff pastry sheets a little thinner (optional step).
6. Using your pumpkin cookie cutter, cut out the shapes.
7. Now, spoon the cooled apple mixture into each shape.  I did a few spoonfuls, but you have to judge based on how big your cookie cutter cutouts are.  Don’t put the apples all the way to the edge- leave enough room to create a seal.
8. Using the egg wash, line the edge of each pumpkin cut out. Then press the top part of your cookie cut out on the bottom.  Make sure you push down and seal all of the edges. Then brush the egg wash on top.
9.  Place on parchment paper or silpat, and then on a baking sheet. Bake in the oven for about 20 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

Halloween Desserts - Jack O'Lantern Apple Pies

I used Pepperidge Farm’s puff pastry dough, but Trader Joe’s is better and here’s why.  The TJ’s dough is made from real butter, PF’s is made from oil.

This year’s Halloween table with floating candles is inspired by an enchanted castle.  The castle, owned by an evil Queen, becomes enchanted at night.

Floating candles are abound. Music plays in the background.Enchanted Castle Halloween tableTo create this table with floating candles, I thought about making my own Harry Potter inspired floating candles as I read various tutorials about it. Enchanted Castle Halloween table

But I was running short on time and supplies, so instead I purchased these remote controlled LED candles.   I then used fishing line and hung the candles from the chandelier. I strongly recommend remote controlled candles as when you hang the candles high it is hard to turn them off without a remote control! Enchanted Castle Halloween tableI had fun with this last image and photoshopped a few extra candles in!
