Is the Aulani Worth It? Our stay in Hawaii 2024

We recently were fortunate enough to travel to Oahu and stay at Disney’s Aulani Hotel in Oahu, Hawaii. Here’s a quick review of our stay at the hotel.

Since having a child, we have found that our view on vacations has changed from being DINKs (dual income, no kids). We used to sit at a peaceful zen like resort – those days for us our gone – and that’s okay! Now we are embracing our full inner child to play with our actual child – and that includes staying at the Disney Aulani!

The lobby is beautiful when you walk into the hotel – big, spacious, feels like you walked into a large Hawaiian resort. My only very minor gripe is that you can’t see the ocean very well right from the lobby. Check in was very smooth and our room was ready early. Then we headed straight to the pools.

The pools are the BEST part of the hotel. The lazy river is the best lazy river I have ever been on. I went around it more times than I could count. The hotel provides the inner tubes so you don’t need to worry about lugging any over. Plus, they have life jackets free for the kids to check out if you desire. Below is a quieter pool. They have many pools and 2 water slides. They also have a splash pad (pictured above). What I did not like about the pools is people save chairs and don’t sit in them. I never saw Disney enforce the “1 hour and we will remove your stuff” policy they have posted everywhere.

The beach the hotel sits on is a man-made lagoon so the water is very tame, which is perfect for kids. I read somewhere they have nets so there aren’t supposed to be any sharks either, which is one less worry. I personally prefer other beaches but the kids certainly love this one! The hotel shares the beach with the Four Seasons next door, a wedding chapel as well.

The food and surrounding restaurants I thought were mediocre. Granted, I am vegetarian and Hawaiian cuisine is not up my alley, so I am aware of that. We did a lot of cooking ourselves as we stayed in a villa with a full kitchen.

One thing I was worried about staying here is that it would be “too Disney” and not enough Hawaiian feeling. The hotel is not “in your face Disney” – you certainly don’t feel like you’ve walked into Disneyland. That said, they do have free character meet and greets. You can choose to go to them or not. I did see a character or two walk through the pool area, but it’s only for a brief moment, like below with Mickey walking by.

The other thing they have at the hotel is their own salt water lagoon. They have viewing windows so it’s like you’re visiting an aquarium! You can snorkel in the lagoon too but that is an extra charge. I saw the line to get a spot started early int he morning and then it was sold out. I think it is great for children who want to snorkel but perhaps aren’t quite ready for the open ocean. Our daughter was too small to do this at this time.

So, is staying at the Aulani “worth it?”

I would say yes – if you have kids. Is this a hotel I would have chosen to travel to without kids? No. But, if you are a Disney fan without kids then I would say yes, worth it. But Disney certainly knows how to cater to families and the Aulani is no different. The pools are absolutely hands down the best. The cost of the hotel is certainly a decision factor. We went during low season and rented DVC points through a third party company to get a deal. Would I go here during high season peak week? No, I would not.

Now, I’m going to share a travel must have for young kids… the best little suitcase! The kids can pull it themselves. If they get tired they can ride on it and you can pull them. It can unfold into a bed on the plane! It is FANTASTIC!

below in the widget to shop are some other finds. The travel set is wonderful for the airplane! I also found the perfect swimsuit for those wanting a little more coverage but don’t want to wear a one piece!

What to Pack to Hawaii Guide

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Since my “What to Pack… ” Guides are some of my most popular posts, I thought I would share a new one with you all: What to pack and wear to Hawaii and any tropical vacation destination!!    I figured with Spring Break coming up, this may be helpful!

No 1 \ Fabulous Sunglasses... you need to protect your eyes from the bright UV.  I am loving these sunglasses: Karen Walker, Ray Bans,  Dior, aviator sunglasses – a good buy, good buy Cat Eye sunglasses

No 2 \ A wrap… It gets chilly on the beach in the evening.  If you intend to stroll the beach at dusk or eat at an outdoor restaurant watching the sun set, I *highly* recommend bringing a wrap with you. Here are my favorites: linen scarf in every color ever!,  pink and green scarf, fun fringe scarf

No 3 \ A Hat.. yes, we know you want to get tan but you really need to protect your face from the sun… as you know it causes wrinkles and aging faster.  I love this hat, but it is a total splurge. Here are some budget friendly options: straw hat, straw fedora, black and white hat, and my favorite visor

No 4 \ A swim suit… You can’t go to the beach without a swimsuit.  Here are my favorite bikinis one, two, three  and one pieces: one, two, three

No 5 \ Beach worthy hair products: I love to bring this with me… after I shower from a long day at the beach I spritz a little of this in my hair to keep the beach-wave going, or you can use this Sea salt spray.

No 6 \ Sunscreen... possibly the most important thing to bring to Hawaii! You are much closer to the equator than the continental US so the rays are more powerful which means it’s way easier to burn! I switch between this one and this one for my face and this for my body.

No 7 \ A Beach Tote… you need to haul your sunscreen to the beach somehow. Do it in a stylish beach tote. I am liking these ones: Lilly Pulitzer, blue and white striped, straw totea steal deal, tory burch

No 9 \ A Cover Up… if you are staying in a hotel you often cannot go from your room to the beach in a swimsuit so you have to wear a cover-up. I like these ones: boyfriend shirt, fringed tunic,a sarong, a long maxi

No 10 \ Stylish Sandals.. I recommend bringing two pairs of sandals.  One pair to the beach and one dressy pair for dinner/wearing around… here are my favorites: tory burch miller (I wear this one), sam edelman plain, valentino rock stud lookalikes, high heeled wedgestotal splurge but super cute!

No 11 \ Tank Top… A nice sleeveless shirt or tank top is a must.  Preferably one that can be dressed up or down for a day around the island and then to a nice dinner. I like these ones… hot pink, eileen fisher,  chambray sleeveless,

No 12 \ Shorts… pretty self-explanatory. You don’t need pants to the island. Only shorts. I wear these pairs: jean cut offs, white shorts, board shorts

No 13 \ Flip Flops… or as the locals say, slippas.  A pair of foam flip flops are a must for the beach… don’t wear your fancy sandals in the sand! my favorites, two, three,  wedge flip flops

No 14 \ A Maxi Dress… so you know, you can take pretty pictures at sunset with your new tan and go somewhere nice! colorful maxi, striped cute A line, tropical print,  cotton dress, like this one too

No 15 \ Dainty Necklace… A little necklace is perfect and something you can wear with your swimsuit or with your flowy maxi dress at nice. This initial necklace with quartz is perfect for the tropics, so is this dainty disc necklace, and this halo pendant is nice too! Oh and I *love* the look of gold stacking bracelets  on perfectly tanned skin!

Grand Hyatt Kauai – Trip report and review

Last year we went to the Grand Hyatt Kauai for vacation.  We had a wonderful time.  We had never been to the island of Kauai before.  I had this post saved up but never really found a chance to share it until now!

Grand Hyatt Kauai Trip Report and Review

We visited in April 2014.  We booked our trip through Costco Travel.  It was really nice… it included flight, car rental, and hotel.  And the bonus was… breakfast everyday in their Ilima terrace dining room!

GROUNDS:
When you first walk into the hotel, you are greeted with the view below… A-looooooo-HA!  That’s what I felt like when I got off the plane. Welcome to Paradise!!  The Grand Hyatt grounds really do feel like you’ve entered paradise.  It is a newer beach front hotel that was designed all at once… it wasn’t one of the original hotels built in the 60s that then tried to upgrade the grounds to meet current desires.  This one was designed all at once!

If you’ve ever stayed in the Grand Hyatt Maui or the Grand Hyatt Kauai… one thing that’s unique to their hotels is they have parrots scattered in the main lobby.  They are so much fun because you can talk to them!

There are beautiful hibiscus and plumeria everywhere on the property. There are all sorts of birds too… swans, parrots, egrets, little songbirds… it is really nice and relaxing!!

DINING:

We ate breakfast every morning at the Ilama Terrace breakfast buffet.  We were treated to the view below… with the swans and beach in the background.  The morning I took the picture it rained… but no big deal.  The terrace breakfast brunch was nice.  It was included in our package so I don’t know how much it costs.  As with all dining outdoors in Hawaii, there is always a problem with the little songbirds that try to steal your food.  You cannot leave your food uncovered and unattended!

We ate at their Italian restaurant, Dondero’s one night.  It was alright. Nothing too special.

We also ate at their luxury restaurant, Tidepools, one night as well.  The ambiance of this restaurant is really nice as it is in thatch roof bungalows with fish swimming around them next to a waterfall.  The food here was pretty good.   If you look at the first picture, the thatch roof building at the base of the waterfall is the restaurant.

POOLS:

I LOVED their pools.  They have a giant pool with a water volleyball/basketball area, little seating areas in the pools, a waterslide, an adults-only pool, and… a lazy river!  I would plop myself on a float and go on the lazy river all day.  Below is a waterfall headed into the pool!

I enjoyed a pineapple mango smoothie at the adults only pool. So refreshing!

Below is a picture of the salt water lagoon.  The beach in front of the hotel kind of sucks, so they built their own salt water area to play around in.  You can rent kayaks and floats and sit in this area.  I didn’t like it very much because the sand is really rough.  However, it was really popular, especially for kids.  We preferred the pools.

BEACH:

The beach… not so great.  It is not for swimming and there are rocks all over. You can’t walk very far barefoot.  It’s nice that this hotel is beach front so you can hear the ocean, but stick to the pools!

OVERALL THOUGHTS:

This hotel was super nice and was on the drier side of Kauai.  It really felt like paradise here.  The pools were fantastic.  The rooms had spacious bathrooms.  I didn’t take a picture of the rooms.  Our room was quiet and faced a garden.  I did not have a chance to go to their spa.

The hotel is family friendly but if you were to go on your honeymoon here there is a quiet adults only pool section too.  Of course, the grounds are magnificent and we had fun walking around the winding paths.

Given that the hotel is located on the Garden Isle, that means one thing… it rains. Every day.  It won’t likely rain all day but as you can see by many of my pictures… it did rain.  Granted, the times it was sunny I was at the pool without my camera.  How else can it stay so green if it doesn’t rain??

Grand Hyatt Kauai Trip Report and Review… Tide pools restaurant is on the right next to the waterfall

If I were to stay on Kauai again I would spend some time at this hotel again and sometime on the Northern side of the island (where it rains even more!).  We did a kayaking and hiking tour one day through this company which was so much fun.

All and all… I recommend this hotel if you are going to Kauai. Check it out: Grand Hyatt Kauai.
However, if you’ve never been to Hawaii, I recommend going to Maui instead.  The Grand Hyatt Maui and the Grand Wailea in Maui both have fabulous pools AND a fabulous beach in front.

Note: I was not compensated for this review.  I just wanted to write about my experience at this hotel.

Aloha!  Well, I’m off soaking up the sun and eating papaya and pineapple in Hawaii right now.

With wedding season approaching and the fact that I’m in Hawaii, I’m reminded of the wedding sites we had looked at (and actually visited!) to get married.  Yep, we had planned to fly to Hawaii and have a wedding… but then, well, destination weddings are really hard to plan.

Since I still have the pictures, I thought I’d share them with everyone.  I know there are brides still looking and I thought this might help with choosing some locations.

The Aulani in Oahu

The Haiku Mill on Maui

The St. Regis Princeville in Kauai

Or just any quiet beach with some beautiful flowers at your feet…

The problem I had with the resorts was that everyone could watch your wedding.  The wedding sites were on the beach with all of the beach goers right behind you most of the time.  I don’t want to see a fat guy in a speedo in the backdrop of my wedding pictures!!  Also, the hotels look down on the sites and we could hear people yelling from the windows. Not romantic to me!

That’s why we looked at private estates.  But, the problem with private estates is that… well, they are houses. So it’s hard to have a big party at a house.

The other thing was cost. However, now looking back on it, I think Hawaii would have been much cheaper!

I think I’ll share my pictures I had saved of tropical wedding bouquets in a future post, as it will just give us all an excuse to look at pretty flowers!!

It’s the middle of Winter…

… and I’m dreaming of paradise.  Although I must confess living in Southern California is hardly experiencing Winter!  All the pictures in the post I have taken myself!
