Decorating my French Country Grandmillennial Dining Room for Spring

Decorate my dining room for Spring with me!

Well it is currently storming outside as I type this post. I am trying to bring the Spring into my house – regardless of what Mother Nature has in store!!

I picked these daffodils from my garden. Somehow they are still standing despite the 50mph winds! I decided to decorate my dining room for Spring.

I set the table for no one in particular. No one is coming over. I suppose I set it for myself. Be gone, Winter Blues! You can get this look too – which checks all the boxes for “Grandmillenial style”. You’ll need a vintage or antique lace tablecloth, a fancy vessel to hold your flowers, fancy goblets, napkin rings. These napkin rings are from LoveShackFancy discontinued, but you can just tie a ribbon around a napkin and get the same look.

I changed some of the pieces on my mantel. I now have my little orange topiaries and blue and white plates. I think I finally banished all of Christmas (and Winter) decor!

I picked yellow ranunculus from my garden (and supplemented a few from the store too) and could not stop photographing them around the house! Their vibrant color sung to me on that cloudy day. You get a little home tour as I moved the vase around the house.

I could not decide where I liked them best. Obviously resting them on the settee was just for playing with the camera – the cat and the kid certainly would not let them rest without being bothered there!

I do like the pop of yellow against the blue and white curtains!

A nice place for guests, but then I cannot see them all day in the powder room.

Ultimately they enjoyed the rest of the week in the kitchen, front and center!

Easy Decor Trick: Transitioning a Spring Table to an Easter Table

I have an easy decor trick for you today. I set my Spring table up recently and then decided hmm… maybe I should make this my Easter table. Want to know my secret? (you’ll have to keep reading).

Let’s first take a look at my Spring table. Freshly cut flowers are from my garden. That took some planning… from last Fall. I make a reminder on my calendar to plant bulbs!

Aren’t the daffodils so pretty? They almost look like faux flowers!

And now here is my Easter table…

Ready for my easy trick? I ADDED BUNNIES. TA DAAAAA! I told you it was easy. I’ve been collecting these little Steiff bunnies for years. My mom would give me one in my Easter basket for many years and I’ve purchased a few here and there too.

I also put a little Lindt chocolate bunny on each place setting.

By the way, this room smells AMAZING because I am burning my Diptyque Tuberose and Orange Blossom candles. SIIIIIGH. I only burn these when I want to feel extra special. Today felt like one of those days with the pretty daffodils!

French Country Spring Home Tour 2019

Welcome to my Spring home tour! I had so much fun arranging flowers and scattering them throughout the house.

April (and March… and February… and January…) showers brought May flowers!

The peonies came from Trader Joe’s and the roses came from my parent’s garden.

This vignette sits in the center of the main island in the kitchen.

I love the yellow roses against the black Wedgwood. These are “Golden Celebration” by David Austin.

A bud vase centerpiece sits in the formal dining room.

Found it at an estate sale last Fall and have been waiting for the little roses to bloom to fill it up!

This normally sits in my bedroom (under the tv) with faux flowers… but it is not very photogenic under the tv! Nor is it well seen there!

Now for the pièce de résistance!

I can’t get enough of these flowers! So pretty!

The problem though is that they don’t last very long. The next day several of them already dropped their petals.

Oh, and they smell heavenly!

Ok, so I couldn’t decide where I liked the vase the best…. so I kept moving it around. Ultimately I settled on this piece.

Isn’t it pretty here???

The vase above is actually part of a set with the pieces below… but I separated them and put these on the piano.

I wish roses were always in bloom. Actually, in California, some of the roses bloom from April – January!

I couldn’t decide which picture not to share, so you get extra!

Back into the kitchen, the breakfast nook has my peonies!

They smell wonderful too!

You don’t have to go all out for tea parties! For this party, I indulged and made one of my favorite iced teas, Tea Forte’s Iced Raspberry Nectar Tea. It is so refreshing on a hot day!

I am excited to use my brand new iced tea glasses! Yes, that’s what they are called! I found them at Pottery Barn! Aren’t they cute?? I also use these silicone straws – here in CA they love paper straws so we had to purchase reusable straws.

Also had fun taking photos of my dining room with the fresh lilacs!

I suppose this post should really be titled “An Ode to Ranunculus”. They are one of my favorite flowers.

I literally walked around my house and shot a hundred pictures because I love them so much.

I couldn’t edit my post down to three pics, so decided just to share a lot of them in various locations in my house!

Things to do NOW to get ready for Spring

Are you itching for Spring like I am? Today as I type this is the first sunny day in what feels like weeks – which is a big deal for us Californians… we live here for the sun, not the other weather!

Sharing some tips on how you can get ready for Spring right now even when the weather outside is frightful.

Bring Flowers Inside – Real or Faux

Add a few florals inside to add a pop of Spring to your house. Below, faux dogwood branches sit in the dining room.

Bouquets of hydrangeas and peonies sit in this French market basket in the sitting room.

At the end of the hallway, ivy and roses fill a planter.

Make a DIY orchid centerpiece like I did below.

Add Blooming Plants to Your Garden

Since we moved into our new house, we haven’t focused on the garden (that is this year’s project). We planted this pair of blooming Camellias . We also have two pink camellias we planted, however it was really windy and every picture I took of the pink ones was blurry!!

I can’t wait to sit out here when the weather is nicer and enjoy!

Restyle a Few Focal Points with Spring

I restyled the fireplace mantel for Spring. I added a few green moss balls which add a nice pop of color for this season.

I also restyled my open shelving bookcases. I tried to make them not so cluttered as they were before. I am most excited about the faux bunny topiary I got from Mackenzie Childs’ after xmas sale.

Today I’m sharing with you a rose birthday party for a vintage rose and tea blog hop and at the end of this post there is a giveaway for a $75 gift card!

What’s the celebration? My birthday! I had fun creating this birthday table and thought you could steal some ideas for your own parties. Roses freshly picked from the garden garnish the cake and decorate the table!

I used vintage plates with roses for each place setting. You can find them at local antique stores and malls, estate sales, or eBay.

Scalloped edged plates from Williams Sonoma sit below each vintage plate. The runner is actually just a piece of fabric.

Vintage French pink goblets are perfect for this rose themed party.

The David Austin roses are so romantic – my absolute favorite! I wrote about baking my cake here in this post – I had never baked a cake from scratch before!

When I was baking my cake I had enough to make a little mini cake. Isn’t it cute?

For those that don’t like cake, I have a few macarons too. Actually, no, I have macarons because I like them and it was my birthday! Ha! *affiliate link* If you like the scalloped plates, they have them with both a green rimmed and a blue rimmed version!

To get this look of your own… you can make your own cake or buy a plain white store made cake. Then pick some roses from your garden and simply place on top. Use small vases in the center of the table. I actually use a few small lipped plates to display some of the roses as they had very short stems, as pictured below.

The roses are from David Austin – I love the look of these roses as they are old world type roses.

What I love about my dining room is that you can dine with the doors open and hear the fountain going… that is, if you lock the indoor cat away so she doesn’t get out!

Well, the sun is setting and I’m ready to eat my cake! It was delicious, btw.

French Country Spring House Tour

A French Country Spring house tour is in store for you today because Spring has sprung here! The roses are blooming and it smells wonderful!

First let’s head into the sitting room. Antique French chairs with a repro trumeau mirror. This mirror was one of the very first things I bought to decorate my place – I was only 22 years old and knew I loved French country style!

Spring flowers sit in the wheeled basket. Faux hydrangeas metal candlesticks sit on the antique desk. I believe the last time you saw this room there was a Christmas tree in the middle of it! Well, now we’ve moved things around and put the antique harp in the corner.

An Aubusson rug sits in the middle of the room. Still love the brick floors which are by Arto brick.

And a pop of color greets you in the kitchen! The roses are all David Austin’s varieties.

We bypassed the family room, because, it’s uh, messy! A French country Spring kitchen awaits! A rustic urn matches the candlesticks.

On top of the hood I put a new Spring wreath and a pair of chickens!

Aren’t the roses gorgeous? They are so fragrant as well. I picked them from my parent’s garden as our garden still is still non existent. Unfortunately the garden roses only last a day or two – that’s okay, I like going to the garden to pick more.

I haven’t really shared this view of our kitchen. The appliance in the island is a drawer microwave. At first I was unsure of a drawer microwave but now I love it!

Here is our view when we stand on the do the dishes.

The fireplace is see through. The rock is Texas limestone. The little floral French chairs are where those who are not cooking tend to sit. I plan to reupholster them.

This mantle is more rustic than that in the living room. My herd of cows and flock of swans sit here. The sconces are Aidan Gray – found them for a steal!

Hmm, now where is this little corner?? My bedroom! Just a little sneak peek of an upcoming post!

Well, it’s time to go… the sun is setting. Let’s go sit in the courtyard and enjoy the scent of lemon blossoms and the sound of the trickling fountain. And yes, below is another sneak peek of another upcoming post! I’ve been busy writing….

Ok, one last look at the roses since they are so pretty and only here for a small time of year (ok, it’s California, they are here from May – November).

Lettuce Ware

Lettuce ware is one of my favorite Spring decorating trends for the table.

Dodie Thayer started making lettuce plates by molding them by hand from lettuce and cabbage in the 1960s in palm beach. Jackie O used to serve on lettuce ware.

C.Z. Guest’s original Dodie Thayer collection that auctioned at Sotheby’s for $27,000!

Dodie Thayer for Tory Burch was released several years ago. The original Dodie Thayer pieces go for thousands at auction. Tory Burch had called up the 90-year-old Dodie Thayer and asked if she would be willing to collaborate. The rest is history.

A Mario Buatta room with lettuce ware.

Now, prior to Dodie Thayer there was Bordallo Pinheiro. Bordallo Pinheiro is a Portuguese artist who began crafting pottery in the 1880s. They are still producing his plates today. His range is the most affordable.

Others made lettuce and cabbage plates too. Below is a pair of 19th century lettuce ware Majolica plates, Ruby Lane

Don’t you love fresh flowers?

I love ranunculus and, well, flowers in general and love to have a least one bouquet of fresh flowers in the house every week.

I was inspired to create this vignette from a recent antique find – a plate that is claimed to be Sevres but that I am not too sure of! Either way, I like it!

I love the little statue on the left.

I gathered a few pink accessories to round out the vignette.

You can create a successful vignette in your home too with a simple color scheme.

Love the pink boxes – some are from Paris and the round one is from Target!

A Romantic English Garden Rose Table

It is definitely rose week here in California! The roses are in full bloom.

When you drive up the driveway the scent of roses wafts through the air in my garden.

So I thought I would bring the fresh flowers in and set a beautiful table!

So with my rose clippers in one hand and a French basket in the other, off I went to the garden.

I must have picked a hundred roses (or more)!

The garden roses are all from David Austin’s variety. I just love David Austin roses – I love the old world feel of them.

You can create a similar table too. Just head off to your garden and clip away!

Because garden roses usually have short stems, I would suggest placing them in bud vases or a container with short edges.

Here I used rectangle metal galvanized zinc boxes with floral foam placed inside to keep them moist and in place.

Each place setting has its own rose bud – when the guest sits down they can smell the rose bud so that way they don’t have to lean awkwardly over the table to enjoy the aroma of the roses.

The garden roses actually remind me of my all time favorite flower, the peony, with all of their layers of petals!

Using garden roses is an inexpensive way to add romance and glamour to your table.

If this were done by a florist it would cost $$$ – but for me, just the price of floral foam and containers!

Oh, and tender loving care on the roses all year.

The plates are from Juliska and the scene on them is that of an English country estate – so really, quite fitting for the theme of this table!

The pink goblets are vintage French and the crystal goblets are antique American brilliant cut glass.

The following David Austin Roses were used: Charlotte, Lady of Shallot, Crown Princess Margareta, Sombreil, Jude the Obscure, Eden, Gentle Hermione, Queen of Sweden, Heathcliff, James Galway, and Scepter’d Isle.

It is a rose candle – it smells so good!

A few new chairs were added too – got them for an absolute steal at Restoration Hardware outlet.

If you are going to recreate this centerpiece – just cut your flowers in the morning with as long as stems as possible. I did a mixture of the varieties but it would look just as pretty to use one variety!
