Sharing inspiration for small and cozy Main bedrooms. Not everyone has a large master bedroom – especially if living in an older house. But having a smaller space doesn’t mean it has to lack style!

I love this front porch! It has many of my favorite things: bricks, working shutters, and lanterns!

The ceiling here is beautiful in the living room. Of course I have my eye on the armoire.

Dish rooms are nothing new. For instance, here is a dish room with Sevres from Marie Antoinette’s apartments.

Travertine is BACK (but did it ever really leave?)

Hot of the presses… Travertine is coming back! But, did it ever really leave? Travertine is classic, in my opinion, and never really went out of style. It has been used for centuries starting with Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. During the most recent travertine trend, the stone was cut in a “tumbled” fashion. I suspect as it makes it way back around this time, it will have sharp lines/edges, fluted, or large slabs. As when most materials come back, they come back in a new way. (example – 1980s polished brass hardware with the 2020s unpolished brass hardware).

When I saw this kitchen below, I knew I had to write this article!

Diego Delgado-Elias created an all travertine island, countertops, light fixture and range hood to compliment the original travertine floors in a French farmhouse, as seen in Architectural Digest. Notice the original floors are tumbled cut, the new travertine island has sharp clean lines.

as seen in Architectural Digest.

Travertine is a classic and I’m glad we are seeing more of it! Here is a villa in France with original travertine floors and staircase.

via My French Country Home by Sharon Santoni

Remember when I wrote that the grey trend is over and making way for warmer colors? Well, travertine is a perfect compliment to warmer, creamier colors.

Here we have a travertine bath tub and flooring. Notice the floor tiles are 12×24 with sharp cut edges.

Ulla Johnson’s bathroom, via Architectural Digest

A bathroom with a travertine counter with a waterfall edge. It feels very modern. I would love to see a big antique oil painting juxtaposed with the clean lines!

A bathroom with brushed brass, travertine and white subway tile.

I actually think we will see a lot more of fluted travertine used as backsplashes, like the one below.

by Il Granito

Travertine is also making a comeback in the form of furniture. Here are two examples of travertine tables.

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, as seen in Architectural Digest
Anthology Creative

Below, travertine is styled in multiple ways – flooring, walls, table, and fluted fireplace detail! It is a little modern for my own preferences, but is an interesting example of what I believe is coming next!

Excited to see more travertine used, as I am a big fan of the natural stone. I have used it in my own home too. So glad it’s back, but… did it ever really leave??

Ever since Brooke and Steve Gianetti shared this house in their newest book, Patina Homes, I have loved this house! But now you can see it featured in this month’s Veranda Magazine! Photos by Lisa Romerein.

Look at this beautiful living room! I love it all! Come style my house.

The house exterior is lovely! The shutters are Farrow and Ball French Grey. I love the landscaping!

Their living room is right ”on trend” with their color schemes. Remember that I wrote cognac and cinnamon browns were coming in with greens? Well, voila! However, these are really quite timeless looks. I love the antique tapestry! Swoon!!

A look at the living room from another direction. I love the indoor/outdoor living space that California is famous for. I love how the beams are on the inside and outside.

This kitchen is so light and airy! I love the windows right behind the range. I have never seen that before. I love the lantern pendants too.

I love this formal dining room. The cabinet built ins remind me of something you would see in a chateau. Mahogany furniture lovers rejoice! Do you see the table and chairs? I love that chandelier too. The drapery is kept light and simple – and at perfect length and proportion.

The breakfast room is just beautiful! I love the beams and built in cabinets with a window seat! If you have an arched window or door, take note of how they installed drapery over this one.

The grand staircase. I love how they put a tree in it!

The pool and pool house. I love the overall feeling – a Mediterranean spa vibe here! They kept the same color trends in the pool house as the rest of teh house too.

Why I don’t decorate based on current design trends

Why I don’t decorate based on current design trendsWe use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

I recently posted a video on Instagram and Tiktok that the grey design trend is over. Before you get upset about this statement and @ me, this is not me who decided this. Just search the internet and you will see tons of articles about this. Trends naturally evolve. And that’s just that, they are trends. I mean, the industry has to have something new to constantly sell us. Let’s just review a few design trends through the decades:

1980s – glass block squares, mauve

1990s – white kitchens, forest green, polished brass

2000s- Tuscan browns and yellows, home offices with cabinetry galore, roosters

2010s- grey trend, farmhouse, shiplap

2020s- black and white, cognac colors, small square tiles

So does that mean the color grey is over?! No! Grey is a great neutral color and goes well with so many things. The grey color is never going away (and I will show you, has been around forever). In fact, I’m having some grey cabinets installed. But why am I have grey cabinets installed if I just said grey is over? BECAUSE I LIKE GREY! What is on the “outs” though is the grey monochromatic look – where literally every single thing in the room is grey with all surfaces grey. But if you like that, that is totally fine and totally okay to decorate in that style!

And that’s the whole point of this post. You should decorate your house with what you love!

But first, look! A room that is grey, way before our current trend.

The ornate First Empire Style Music Room in the Hôtel de Beauharnais, Paris. It is now the official residence of the German Ambassador to France.

Photo: Eric Sande source @rupert.dixon

Remember Pierre Deux? All of trends of the 2000s right here. And guess what? I like it a lot! But good luck finding fabrics. I WISH I stocked up on their toile before they went out of business. It is so hard to find good toile these days – they come in two color ways and its the same pattern.

Pierre Deux

I like to read the design magazines, follow Pinterest, read other blogs and social media accounts to be aware of the trends. I like watching how things evolve. It can be great inspiration; maybe you’ll see some things you like. But we all can’t go redoing our kitchens every 5 years to keep up with the trends. So it is very important, especially in big purchases, to make sure you really love it before investing a lot of money. If you are aware that you like the item because it is trendy, then perhaps choose a less costly way of incorporating the trend into your house. An example would be to use throw pillows to introduce the trendy color.

As you know, I love French country. It recently had it’s moment, and it’s ”over”. Remember Restoration Hardware had their big Entablature mirror? Oh how I loved this piece. It eventually went on clearance, and now it is gone. RIP RH Louis XIV and neoclassical inspired pieces. But does that fact that many popular box stores don’t carry that much French country anymore keep me from liking French country aesthetic? No!! I can find it online still (well, except Pierre Deux toile fabric)! Brown French antiques are cheaper right now since they are not popular, FYI.

Also, this is picture has a lot of grey everything that is ”over”, I like it a lot, except the light. I have liked it for at least a decade. I would add a pop of color somewhere… why? Because that’s what I like!

So I don’t decorate ”to keep up with the trends”. The reason is because I would not be decorating my house for myself. I’m the one that lives here after all, so I am the one that needs to like it. Home is where the heart is. So put your heart into your decorating and decorate with what you love. So if that means I’m keeping my furniture brown and riding through the paint-your-furniture trend, then so be it! My antique French armoire has been brown for 200 years and will be for another (200?) more.

Originating in Paris in the 1860s, Maison Bagues is known for its beautiful bronze and rock crystal sconces and chandeliers, often with whimsical motifs. It is most well known motif is the bird, which appeared in its designs in the 1920s and has not left.
