Decor Trend: Bordallo Pinheiro Cabbage Plates

Bordallo Pinheiro cabbage plates are made in Portugal and started in 1884. The artist created everyday objects in the Majolica style. However when Portugal’s borders closed due to dictatorship, other artists such as Dodie Thayer emulated his style. Now borders are open and his designs remain extremely popular today – and i would argue are reaching new heights in popularity as they are currently displayed front in center at Williams Sonoma.

Now I don’t own Bordallo Pinheiro cabbage but I do have some of his other green plates, as pictured above! Below is from Williams Sonoma! I LOVE IT!! It is so perfect for Easter or Spring!

Now the cabbage plates don’t just come in green… but multiple other colors too! I love the blue and deep purple/aubergine!

Little Girls Bedroom Makeover – Moving from the Nursery to the “big girl” bed

My little girl recently moved from her crib into her big girl bed. It was a bittersweet day for me. I had spent so much time planning her nursery and the days came and went. Well, needless to say, my little girl was very excited to move into her big girl bed!

For the bed, I had painted a bed I had previously owned. It was black but I did not feel that it fit the whimsical feminine mood of this room.

I used Annie Sloane chalk paint in pure. I used 2 coats on the whole bed, but 3 coats on the headboard. It took me about 2 weeks to make over the bed. I sanded down the globs of paint that I missed to make it nice and smooth after I was done painting.

After sanding, I used Fusion Mineral Paint Tough Coat Matte to apply to the headboard only. I did two coats of this and let it dry. For the flowers and bunny rabbit, I used an appliqué by Iron Orchid Designs. It was really easy to use. It is basically a sticker that you transfer onto the furniture. I would highly suggest watching videos on how to do it. For this project, I combined two designs: “The Botanist” and “Whispering Willow”

Once the designs were transferred, I applied one more coat of the Tough Coat matte on top. This method worked out well for me – I would suggest testing it on a piece of furniture before to make sure it works for you.

I loved how it turned out and so does my daughter!

Tent Pavilions: A Garden Folly for Summer

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Tents were extremely popular in earlier times as buildings were not constructed yet. A simple tent could be made of leaves and sticks, to animal skins, then eventually turning into full on pavilions constructed for Mughal Kings (see here the only surviving tent ensemble). These tents turned into very lavish complexes with rooms and thousands of tents.

While this isn’t a lesson on the entire history of tents, let’s summarize. Eventually the West was inspired by the East, and the Europeans began constructing these tents not only out of fabric but also out of metal to put into their gardens.

The Guards’ tent at Drottningholm Palace in palace is perfect replica. The tent is made of metal and made to look like blue and white striped fabric complete with tassels. It was built in 1781.

Below is an artist watercolor of the tent that was once in Parc Monceau, Paris.

Naturally King Louis of France had to have one. Below, from Porte Saint Antoine, Versailles.

The next three tent pavilions are of modern day construction by architects Curtis and Windham. I must say, I love them all!

Below, captured by Paul Hester for Veranda Magazine.

A less permanent tent option as featured in House & Garden. It is by Raj Tent Club Shop and is a collab with V&A museum. The pictures below are all from Raj Tent Club Shop (not sponsored).

What are Cremone Bolts and How to Use them in your Home

Cremone bolts are one of my favorite types of hardware. It is a type of hardware use to close doors or windows. It has vertical rod that runs the length of the cabinet and is used to secure the cabinet. It has a knob in the middle that twists and moves the bolt up and down to lock the cabinet. They are most commonly seen in French and other European cabinetry and windows.

I believe they started off for closing windows and doors in 18th century France. Below is the kitchen belonging to Frederic Fekkai, photo by Simon Watson as featured in Architectural Digest. As you keen see, there is a cremone bolt to close the window.

Below is a Paris apartment remodeled by Andrew Siurman Architects. I love the details of the original blot handle!

Decorate my dining room for Spring with me!

Well it is currently storming outside as I type this post. I am trying to bring the Spring into my house – regardless of what Mother Nature has in store!!

I picked these daffodils from my garden. Somehow they are still standing despite the 50mph winds! I decided to decorate my dining room for Spring.

I set the table for no one in particular. No one is coming over. I suppose I set it for myself. Be gone, Winter Blues! You can get this look too – which checks all the boxes for “Grandmillenial style”. You’ll need a vintage or antique lace tablecloth, a fancy vessel to hold your flowers, fancy goblets, napkin rings. These napkin rings are from LoveShackFancy discontinued, but you can just tie a ribbon around a napkin and get the same look.

I changed some of the pieces on my mantel. I now have my little orange topiaries and blue and white plates. I think I finally banished all of Christmas (and Winter) decor!

Modern European Kitchen – Kitchen Design Trends 2023

Are you ready for some kitchen design trends for 2023? I’m calling it “the modern European kitchen”. It has an old world collected fell with a few modern touches.

Here are the top trends:

  • Floating Marble Shelving
  • Large natural stone slabs as the back splash
  • High contrast marble – white marble with dark grey/black veins
  • Mix of collected pieces including oil paintings, wooden chopping boards so the kitchen doesn’t feel “brand new”
  • Mixed metals and materials – the hardware on the fixtures do not have to match

This kitchen below by Carley Summers featured in Architecture Digest has all the design trends I mentioned above.

While a lot of the kitchens do not feature upper cabinets, this one does below!

This kitchen below features a 20′ floating marble shelf!

Another feature is a pot rack behind the range, as pictured below.

These are all very beautiful kitchens. You can get a similar feel too without remodeling. Just style your kitchen with some similar pieces: place an antique oil up against your backsplash, a few chippy vases found at the antique mall or flea market, ironstone, wooden chopping boards (aka charcuterie boards), wooden spoons… or you can shop my widget below.
