Designing a Master Bathroom – Inspiration and Floor Plans

Well I’m quite excited today because this is the first post on my blog completely dedicated to our house build!!  If you didn’t know, we are building our dream house.  To give you an idea – it’s out in the country on some acreage.  We have cows as neighbors! (yes, I’m excited about it and we can’t smell them – I find cows less annoying than leaf blowers, sirens, car alarms, and neighbor’s barking dogs).
This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

We met with our architect recently and saw our first draft of our floor plan. What I am going to talk about today is what we’re struggling with in the design: the master suite… and mainly, the master bathroom.

source

Here’s the deal with our master bathroom.  We aren’t going to have a bathtub because frankly, we *never* take a bath and it seems like a waste of space and money. AND if I were to pick out a bathtub, it would have to be a freestanding beautiful one that will cost $10k. Not something I want to spend money on when it will never be used. And for those of you who are shocked by the no-tub thing, there will be another tub in a guest suite that will be very nice to accommodate children and bath-takers.

sorry, no expensive beautiful tub for me. source

Other things about the design… we are going to have double vanities.  We are thinking a pair of either this one or this one from Restoration Hardware.  The question is, how do we arrange the bathroom??

Other things we are wanting for the bathroom – large walk in shower with double shower heads, bench.  Toilet in a separate toilet room. A place for a linen closet. And also a place for a towel warmer.

source

A few shower inspiration photos. I am thinking marble shower using 12×12 tiles on the wall.

source

I think this one below may be my favorite…

source

Or maybe this one, ha! They’re all so pretty.

source

Instead of a bathtub, I’m going to have a pretty vanity/makeup table.  I think that’s how we can add drama back into the bathroom as it seems that the bathtub is usually the focal point.  Hmm, guess I’ll have to go shopping for a fabulous antique French vanity table to put in front of the window….

When you look at these pictures, instead of a bathtub I want you to picture a fabulous make-up table vanity there instead.  That’s how I’m seeing it.

source

These photos all have different styles. What I’m focusing on is the bathroom layout.   I really like the symmetry of the vanities across from each other.  Imagine the pretty dressing table where the tub is in the above picture.  In the picture below, again I notice I’m drawn to the symmetry. I think its pleasing to the eye and therefore relaxing.

source

A different type of layout from the two above. Hmmm…

source: my own picture

Again, love the two vanities, perhaps the makeup table could go in between the vanities under the window. Now though, how is the rest of this bathroom arranged? Where would the shower go? These are questions I’m thinking when looking at the pictures.

source

Now, this is pretty. Again, the symmetry is nice on the left.  A pretty vanity where the tub is.  Is the toilet room the door on the left? I think I’d make it that.  I think the photographer is standing in the shower. This is nice. Oh, and I totally love all the decor in the bathroom too.

source

Smaller vanities next to each other, we could do this. How cute are the Monsieur and Madame tiles??

source

These vanities below are laid out close to each other but I still like it. How is the shower placed though??

source

This is nice too. The style is contemporary but we aren’t looking at that.  Maybe instead of a fireplace, a French armoire to be used as a linen closet? Yes, I think so.

source

In this layout below, we could just remove the tub from the center. Perhaps the shower is on the left and the toilet on the right.

source

Here is a bathroom I really love!  I do like the built-in cabinets as they look like furniture.  I think this bathroom has a really nice lay out.  Now, how do I incorporate this into my house plan overall, hmm…

Traditional Bathroom by El Dorado Hills General Contractors Lee Construction

Traditional Bathroom by El Dorado Hills General Contractors Lee Construction

Now, here are some actual sketches of bathroom floor plans that caught my eye.  In the one below, I do like how the closets buffer noise from the bathroom.  I would remove the linen closet and put symmetrical double vanities there.  Also remove the door back from the bathroom to the WIC entrance. Tub turns into a table.

source

Now, this is nice. Again I like how the closets buffer the noise. Although, the shower is too small for us, we’d have to bump it out.

source

In the large floor plan below, I’m just focusing on the master suite and bathroom. Has a nice flow to it.  Although I don’t need double toilets.

Now on to the overall feel of the bathroom.  I am wanting it to feel not so much like a bathroom.  I want it to feel like a bit of a spa/retreat. I want some furniture in the bathroom.  Instead of a traditional linen closet that’s built in, why not use an antique French armoire??  It adds drama and style.  I would like a chair or a bench too, so you can put your robe down or sit!

The bathroom below I am in love with. It doesn’t feel like a bathroom, does it? It feels like a spa!  French armoire as a linen closet!   table in the middle! Oh, an Aubusson rug! J’adore! I think this picture is the overall “feel” I’m going for.

*love* this bathroom  source

Instead of an antique armoire, the person below used an antique secretary as a linen closet! I think it is *so* interesting. I love it.

source

This scene below has such a nice vignette, if you put your hand over the bottom half of the picture, you wouldn’t think you’re in a bathroom!

source

Don’t you think these bathrooms with real furniture in them are really cool?

source

Want to know another bonus of using nontraditional furniture in the bathroom – pieces can be picked up cheaper than built-in cabinets!  Go to estate sales, antique stores, flea markets. We can find pieces for cheaper and that are made of solid wood!  Built-ins, especially custom built-ins, are a pretty penny!

Look at how someone made this French cabinet into a double vanity! So clever and so totally cute.

source

One last inspiration picture…

source

So, that’s what I’m thinking for the master bathroom.  Writing a post about it helped me organize my thoughts!

What do you think about using non-traditional furniture (like an armoire, table, secretary) in the bathroom?? Leave me a comment!

On the net….
1. Earlier this week I blogged about driving around Napa and looking at the Napa Valley home style.  I thought I would share a beautiful Napa home designed by Richard Hallberg, it is a slideshow of his top 10 decorating tips and images of the beautiful house below.

2. Are you a No-Reply blogger? That means when you leave a comment, people cannot reply back to you to let you know that they’ve responded to your comment.  Guess what. I discovered I was a no-reply blogger! *gasp* I didn’t used to be, but when I switched my blogspot profile over to a google+ profile, it switched me. This tutorial here teaches you if you are a no-reply blogger, and if you are, how you fix it!

Spotted…
A perfume fit for a queen, literally!  The Palace of Versailles and Guerlain perfume teamed up to create a perfume named “Le Bouquet de la Reine”, or “The Queen’s Bouquet”.  The scent’s inspiration is from the gardens of Versailles, and in particular Jasmine, her favorite flower.  It is a limited edition perfume made to help raise money to restore the Palace Apartments.  You can read more here and purchase it  if you wish, up until May 17.

The bottle of the perfume has the Sun King’s 23-point sun designed on it

From the Blog…
Since Springtime is around the corner, I enjoyed revisiting my post about tulipieres.  A What? AKA a fancy vase that stacks way high and shows off your flowers individually. I *love* mine! There are many different types of tulipieres, you need to check it out.

I couldn’t decide. I *love* this floral arrangement below.

And this English hunt below really did happen recently. Don’t you love the English and their traditions?

Personal…

You all know what time of the week it is? Blog Hop Time!

My favorite thing this week was that first house plan for the house that we are building was unveiled to us!  I am so excited about it! We met with the architect this week and it is all so exciting (and scary at the same time!). I will be blogging about our house build, when I have more things to talk about, but in the interest of privacy I won’t be putting the floor plan on the internet!

If you didn’t know, this blog hop is across *twelve* blogs, so by linking up you get a lot of exposure!  We also started a new pinterest board and are trying to pin one image from everyone who links a post with us!

Anyway, let’s get on to some of my favorite link ups from last week!  You all have so many inspiring and interesting posts, it is hard for me to choose a few!

Our MT Nest wrote about her trip to Magnolia Market!!! Are you all Fixer Upper fans? If you are, you need to go check it out!

White Grey Home shared this cute mudroom. I love the little olive tree she brought inside, she said she only brings the olive tree in for Winter, but I think it would look cute there year ’round too!

Maison de Cinq wrote this interesting post about the importance of using antiques to decorate. She writes about how using just one antique piece in each room makes the decorating much more interesting and unique.

Old Things New shared this cute French Country drop cloth tablecloth tutorial. It seems pretty easy to make even for those who aren’t super crafty!

It’s time to share your blog at the Thursday Favorite Things blog hop!

Meal Kit Delivery – Blue Apron Vegetarian Review

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Have you heard of meal kit deliveries?  If not, let me explain: every week you can have a meal kit delivered to your front door.  The kit is complete with just enough of the fresh ingredients to make the designated amount of food.  Consider it a mix of… grocery shopping, meal planning, and trying out new recipes all in one box!

Today’s review is about Blue Apron.  Oh, by the way, Blue Apron did not pay me to write this post, I just decided to write about it on my own!

Blue Apron Review
Broccolini and goat cheese polenta with red onion jam and soft boiled egg

Let’s continue on, shall we?

How it works: Blue Apron offers once-a-week meal options for either 2 person or 4 person families.  You will get to make 3 meals per week.  You select which day of the week you want to accept your delivery.  You choose your meal type (beef, chicken, or in my case, vegetarian) and then choose which meals you would like.  For me, there are 3 vegetarian options every week.

vegetarian options

As you can see, every meal is planned out for the week.  If you look closely, you can see that some of the weeks I have chosen to Skip a Delivery… either I didn’t like the menu choice OR I already have plans that week and won’t be around to make it.

If you are not a vegetarian, you can see you have more meal options to choose from: however, you can’t do every single possible combination – some combinations are limited and I don’t know why.

What’s in the box? (It’s a 12-16lb box, I forgot to take a picture).

All of your ingredients are individually packaged with a meal card.  As you can see, they give you just enough ingredients for each meal. Example, below you only have 3 leaves of Swiss chard instead of a whole head.

Here is an example of the recipe card they send you.  I like how the recipe card is laid out. It is easy to read with blue fonts for the ingredients. And then as you can see, step-by-step illustrated instructions. It is easy to follow.

And here is the finished product: Fresh beet linguine with Swiss chard, goat cheese, and toasted walnuts

Here is another one of the meals, Shiitake mushroom and cabbage dumplings with garlic roasted tatsoi.

…and here’s what’s left of the dumpling because we were hungry and ate them before I could take a picture!!

How does it taste?

Actually, surprisingly good!!  I was a little iffy about some of these recipes because they are not meals I would have normally chosen to make for myself.  But they were actually really good. They also seemed to be pretty healthy too.

How much does it cost?

The 2-person plan has one delivery a week with 3 meals portioned for two people.  The price is $60 per six serving delivery, making is $10 per serving.  Shipping is free.

The 4-person family plan comes with either 2 or 4 meals per week, depending on what you choose. This starts at $70 per eight-serving delivery (so two 4-person meals) or $8.74 per serving.

How does the cost compare to competitors?

Hello Fresh is a bit more expensive but has a few more vegetarian options, with 2 and 4 person subscriptions and 3 meals per week.  The 2 person plan is $69 per week ($11.50 per serving) and family plan is $129 per week ($10.75 per serving)

Plated is even more expensive, but you have a lot more options to choose from.  A 2 person 3-meal order would be $72 per week, or $12 per serving.  This company also has some super gourmet meals too that you can order.

Pros

-Made me try new vegetables that I wouldn’t have otherwise chosen to cook – a feat for a lifelong vegetarian!

-Tried new recipes that I wouldn’t have tried otherwise

-Took out a trip to the store and the hassle of meal planning

-Recipes were easy to follow

-No food waste leftover – a problem for my husband and I we usually have to throw food away because it goes bad faster than we can eat it

-You can choose to skip a week – and you won’t be charged. Perfect for flexible schedules

-Dishes seem to be pretty healthy and well-balanced meals. Oh, did I mention they look pretty?

Cons

-Kind of expensive at $10per person to eat at home, however cheaper than going to a restaurant with gourmet type food

-Sometimes I felt like it wasn’t a whole meal, for instance, the day of the Shiitake mushroom dumpling I was still hungry after eating.  I felt like sometimes it need a little more – on beet linguine day we added a small side salad.

-There is a lot of recycling with their packaging which takes up a ton of space in the recycle bins, but they do have a program where you can ship back the trash free of charge.

Overall, I am happy with Blue Apron and will continue to use them.  We go through the menus each week and decide if we want to order that week or not.  If we are too busy that week or aren’t interested in the menu, we simply “Skip the Delivery” (and won’t get charged on our card).  If you don’t feel like you’re a “good cook” then I recommend these for you because you will feel like a chic chef afterwards!  If you’re busy and on the run all the time, these could be nice too.

Napa Valley Home Styles – Beautiful Homes in Napa!

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

I am sharing with you some pretty homes in the Napa Valley!  One of my favorite day trips is to head to Napa, go eat at Giugni’s Deli, shop, and then drive around and look at the wineries and estates.

picture is “from the land” book

The houses and wineries in the Napa Valley are beautiful.  I took all of these pictures, unless otherwise noted, from our drive!

It’s nice to look at houses during this time of year as the trees and grapes don’t have their leaves on yet, which it makes it easier to see the houses!

I know the pictures aren’t the best, but that’s how it is!

I noticed a lot of the home styles in Napa right now involved crushed granite driveways with olive trees (and grapes, of course!).  I like the rock on the house below…

Lots of stone, lots of metal roofing material!

The natural wood look is very in, as are steel windows… The modern farmhouse style seems to be the most popular with the new houses right now.

Now I LOVE this house going in below… it is taking them forever to build, but I love the modern American farmhouse style it is in.  Every time we drive by there is so much equipment blocking the pretty view… and I’m sure a large fence will be up shortly!
Having a mix of different roofing material is also in.  The metal roof is popular.

Here it is being built earlier in the year… (updated the post, found this picture)

Don’t you like this driveway… wonder what’s there… I just love driveways like this, keeping peeping toms away (like, um, myself in this case!)

Have you seen this book, “From the Land” ?If not, you have to check it out. It’s a really beautiful book full of homes designed by Backen, Gillam, and Kroeger.

As you drive around Napa, you notice some of their work… What I like about this fence below is that the fence eon the right that looks like wood is actually concrete… faux bois concrete fence!

I remember driving by here *before* the fence was up… it’s such a pretty house, wish I took a picture then! *update* found some pictures I took before the fence went up!

Love the outdoor area! The sitting area that is covered is totally cool.

Now, this house you can easily see from the road… one time we were driving by and saw the exact view like it was just straight out of the book! Unfortunately the picture I took of the house has my finger in the center, but here it is in the book…

The current trendy Napa Valley home style is pretty much summed up in this picture… steel windows, metal roof, natural aged wood look, gravel rock, big open spaces.

I had to share this picture of the inside of the house from the book… the bedspread is the exact same fabric I used on my French chairs! I guess I could just move right on in…

I like the old European feel of the house below…

First, isn’t the mustard beautiful when it’s in bloom? And second, check out this beautiful mansion!

Anyway, back to the day trip of what we like to do in Napa. So we like to eat at Giugni’s Deli in St. Helena. Bring cash as they do not accept credit.  Then, after eating at Giugni’s, we like to go shopping. Here is from one of my other favorite shops, Olivier Napa.  They have tons of gourmet foods, like caramel, chocolate sauces, olive oils, vinegars…

They are also one of the few retailers of authentic French porcelain company, Pillyvut.

I wrote about my favorite store in Napa Valley here, called Napa Valley Vintage Home, in St. Helena. You all need to check it out!

So, I’m sorry I don’t have the best pictures but just wanted you all to get a taste of what the Napa Valley Home Style is currently. I also like to share my favorite things to do! If you are a non-wine drinker there are still things to do in the Napa Valley!!

I’m changing Friday Favorites just a wee bit.  Each week I’ll try to stick to general topics… some will always be the same, like “on the net”… which would have an interesting link that I found on the net. The “spotted” category would have something that I thought was cool that I spotted.
This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

I may change the others around, like “favorite food”, which is self explanatory… or “personal”, that category would have what I was up to this week in real life…or favorite instagram, because I LOVE instagram… On the Blog, for things that I’ve blogged about before as I know a lot of you are new to my blog.  Okay, let’s get this started…

On the ‘net…
Julia Child’s French Country estate where she learned to cook is up for sale. You can check out the estate here!

Personal…
We went hiking this President’s Day Weekend. We crossed a stream using the fallen log (or you could have rock-hopped across but the water was high so we went with the log). We felt like the Oregon Trail pioneers going across the stream! Do you remember that computer game?

Parisienne Gnocchi Recipe

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Now, I’m sure you have all had gnocchi.  But the question is, have you had Parisienne gnocchi? I bet you haven’t!  Parisienne gnocchi is actually very different from the regular ol’ Italian gnocchi that we’re all familiar with.

Parisienne Gnocchi

Parisienne gnocchi is not chewy like Italian gnocchi. It is light and airy. Why? Because the dough is made from a choux pastry dough and not from a pasta type dough.

I much prefer these gnocchi to the Italian gnocchi. Hands down.  The first time I had them was with a friend… we were at a French restaurant and she ordered them for me. She had spent several years in France and obviously knew about them.  She would order things for me at the restaurant – this one was a big hit!

The next time I had them as at Bouchon Bistro in Las Vegas.  I knew I couldn’t go back to Vegas every time I had a hankering so instead I learned how to make them! (Although, there is a Bouchon Bistro in Yountville… much closer!)

Makes 8 servings – printable recipe here

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 12 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp plus 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp chopped chervil (French parsley)
  • 1 tbsp chopped chives
  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley
  • 1 tbsp chopped tarragon
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere
  • 5 to 6 large eggs
  • seasonal vegetables to sauté – I used mini peppers and mushrooms this time.

Directions

  1. Combine water, butter, and 1 tsp salt into medium saucepan and bring to a simmer.
  2. Reduce the heat to medium, then add all of the flour at once (be careful, it might bubble at you).  Then, stirring rapidly, mix until the dough pulls way from the sides of the pan and the bottom of the pan is clean. The dough should be glossy and smooth.  You know you are done when steam comes from the dough.
  3. Now transfer the dough to the mixer bowl, with the paddle attachment.  Add the mustard, herbs, and 1 tbsp of salt. Mix for a few seconds to distribute ingredients evenly. Then add the cheese.
  4. Now, with the mixer on a low speed, add 3 eggs, one at a time, beating until each egg is completely incorporated before adding the next one.  Then increase the speed to medium and add another 2 eggs, each one at a time. Now lift, the dough up onto a rubber spatula and let it run off. If it doesn’t move at all or is too dry, beat in the extra egg.
  5. Place the dough into a large pastry bag fitted with 5/8-inch tip and let it rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  6. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a simmer, not a boil. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and paper towels.
  7. Pipe the gnocchi into the pot – squeeze the bag, then with a small knife cut off 1 inch lengths of dough and let it drop into the pot.  Once the gnocchi float to the top, let them sit for another 1-2 minutes the remove them with a skimmer and place on the paper towel baking sheet.
  8. Place the gnocchi on the parchment paper lined baking sheet and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or up to 1 day. Or you can freeze them.
  9. Now, to serve them you sauté them and serve with seasonal vegetables.
  10. In a large pan, heat up some EVOO.  For this time, I sautéed some mini peppers and mushrooms – as that is what I had on hand. You can serve them with any seasonal vegetable though!
  11. Then, add the gnocchi and let them sauté in the pan too. You want them to get a little brown and crispy on one side. Serve hot.

Adopted from epicurious

piping the choux

Poaching the gnocchi… It is helpful if someone can hold the piping bag and another person cuts the dough.

The gnocchi are resting…

Here they are sautéing in the pan with fresh mini peppers and mushrooms.

Notice the gnocchi are browned on one side- that makes them extra tasty! They get a little crunch!

I encourage you to try this recipe – what’s nice is that you can freeze the gnocchi and save them for later. If you want to freeze them, put them in an airtight freezer bag. Then, on the day you want to use them let them thaw for several hours. Then you can sauté them once they are warmed.

A Kitchen from the Movie, “The Intern”

I recently watched a movie called “The Intern” starring Anne Hathaway and Robert DeNiro.  The movie is about the relationship between Ben (Robert DeNiro) who is a 70 year old who interns for Jules (Anne Hathaway), the founder of a successful e-commerce website.  The movie navigates through the age-gap.  I thought the movie itself was so-so, but what I really liked was Jules’ kitchen!

the kitchen on the movie set, the intern, from architectural digest

I thought this kitchen would appeal to many people… it’s very modern. The open shelving, the subway tile, the white and grey color palette!  Apparently the barstools are from Restoration Hardware.

Then there is the pendant lighting over the island too. Oh, and white countertops… can’t tell if they are marble or quartz, or some other product.

Now the director and writer for this movie, Nancy Myers, has done many of my favorite movies… the new Parent Trap, the Holiday, It’s Complicated, Something’s Gotta Give… so of course the set on this movie was beautiful!

Pictures are Architectural Digest and are not mine.

What do you think of this kitchen?

Five on Friday #3

Well, this week felt like the first week of Spring over here in California.  Sorry for all of those that are living where it snows… but the first trees are now blooming, the daffodils are in full bloom, and everything else is budding out!

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

1.This beautiful house in Provence!  It is owned by Frederic Fekkai (you know, of shampoo fame).  It was featured in March’s Architectural Digest issue.  You need to check it out here

I just *love* this driveway entrance to his house. LOVE.

 2. Napa Valley
We went to Napa Valley this week… just because. It was 80 degrees there! It was so pretty as the mustard was all blooming.  I don’t drink so I never go to Napa for the wine, but instead for food, shopping, and taking in the pretty views!

3. Diptyque

Had fun playing around with my new perfume, called Do Son by Diptyque. It has a nice scent for Spring.. tuberose, orange leaves, pink peppercorn, rose, and iris.

 4. Bouchon Bakery
Went to Bouchon Bakery in Yountville.  Previously I had been to the one in Las Vegas and wasn’t too impressed… I think perhaps the 110 degree heat didn’t treat the pastries very well…. because this time I had shared an almond croissant which was very good, a lemon currant scone which was tasty, and a hazelnut macaron which was also quite nice.  I recommend going here. Oh, the salted caramel latte was delicious! oh yum yum! Check out Bouchon Bakery and the locations here

5. Love Macarons

I leave you with this croquembouche-style macaron tree.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I thought I would put together a post with some pink themed inspiration.  I know we’re all dying for some color after the blandness of January!

A Review of B. Patisserie in San Francisco

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

If you’re a longtime reader of this blog, you’ll know that I *love* croissants.  GOOD croissants. Made-in-France croissants.  I am a croissant snob.  I will say that I’ve never had a perfect croissant outside of Paris… until this past week when I traveled to B. Patisserie in San Francisco.

B. Patisserie in San Francisco
a perfect croissant with a cappuccino at B. Patisserie

The perfect croissant is a million layers, with the perfect flakiness on the outside that has a nice crunch when you bite into it.  Then, the inside is light and airy and soft.  The croissants at B. Patisserie were perfect.  I had been searching for a perfect croissant since going to Paris frequently is not in the itinerary – but I do think I can manage frequent trips to San Francisco since it’s a 2 hour drive to the city center.

So, I did a little research about this bakery and found out the owner trained under Pierre Herme. Never heard of Pierre Herme? He is the grand master at French pastries. He makes the BEST CROISSANT IN THE WHOLE WORLD!! (yes I’m shouting because it’s SO GOOD!). I wrote about it here. Ok, so now it makes sense that this lady knows what she’s doing! She learned from the best!

Ok, what else did we try besides the plain butter croissant?

Well, we tried the Almond Orange Croissant.  It was even BETTER than the plain croissant. It had almonds on top but then inside was orange zest with an orange syrup. I… forgot to take a picture because it was gobbled right up!

a look inside the pastry case

We also tried the Passion Fruit Almond Bostock.  I was a little iffy about trying this. But guess what?? It was good.I didn’t know what a Bostock even was… but I liked it. I looked it up after the fact.  A Bostock is when almond frangipane tops a brioche.  I would 100% eat it again.

Okay, now let’s talk about what this patisserie is most famous for… it’s Kouign Amman. Say what? “Queen Ah-man “it’s how you say it!  It is essentially a croissant dough but there is sugar added to the dough and then it is baked in a circle.  The bottom of the Kouign Amman was this little caramelized layer of sugar… followed by flakes of buttery goodness.

The Kouign Amman originated from the Breton region in France and literally is “butter cake”.

Kouign Ammans sit in the bottom of this picture!

So, what’d we think of the Kouign Amman? It was GOOD.  We tried plain, chocolate, and an apple cranberry. They were all very good.   There are so many different flavors of this pastry, I’m sure you could find one you like!

The final verdict?

Every. single. thing. was good. Not just good… excellent. I was really impressed with B. Patisserie and I know we will be making a point to go there in the future… perhaps next time we will have to try something out of the refrigerator case (sorry key lime tart wasn’t singing to me at 9am!).

Oh, and yes, parking is bad. But it’s SF. It’s always bad. Please continue to circle until you find a spot – it’s worth it.

There are other bakeries in San Francisco I’ve written about…

Tartine Bakery (honestly, B. Patisserie is much better).

Craftsman and Wolves in my other favorite bakery – the owner makes very good pastries that have more unique flavors. Very very good. My second favorite bakery in San Francisco!

2. Pretty Flowers
I filled my tulipiere again with pretty flowers!! This time I used white carnations, purple mums, and seeded eucalyptus!  I chose these flowers because I knew they would last a long time… I’ve actually had them up for nearly 2 weeks. The mums wilted but the other flowers are going strong!

3. B. Patisserie in San Francisco

This past weekend we ventured in San Francisco and ate at a fabulous bakery called B. Patisserie.  I am still staring at this pretty picture I took… we had cappuccinos, croissants, and more!!  A full review is coming this Sunday morning!

4. Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop!!

As you may or may not know, I recently joined as a co-hostess for a fun link party!  You all should join! Why? WELL you get super exposure for your posts because the party is on 12 (yes, TWELVE!) different blogs!  You can link up nearly anything (except advertising).  It’s on Wednesday nights… if you missed this week’s link up, it’s not too late, you can link up HERE!!

5. Grease: Live!

Did you watch it this past Sunday? If you didn’t, I’m sorry to say you missed a hit!

It was really REALLY good, actually.  I loved how Boyz II Men played Teen Angels!

I think Vanessa Hudgens from High School Musical fame did a better job playing Rizzo then Stockard Channing!  Anyway, if you missed it, hopefully they will re-air it because it was worth watching!
