This year’s Halloween table with floating candles is inspired by an enchanted castle.  The castle, owned by an evil Queen, becomes enchanted at night.

But I was running short on time and supplies, so instead I purchased these remote controlled LED candles.   I then used fishing line and hung the candles from the chandelier. I strongly recommend remote controlled candles as when you hang the candles high it is hard to turn them off without a remote control! Enchanted Castle Halloween tableI had fun with this last image and photoshopped a few extra candles in! How to Style a Fall Table with Non-Traditional Colors and a Blog Hop!

Today I have two exciting things: one, I’m sharing my Fall tablescape and I’m hosting and participating in a Fall tablescape blog hop as part of the “It’s a Wonderful House” blog tours! We did this series last Fall and Christmas and it was fun and successful! Tons of beautiful tablescape inspiration for you today!

So let’s get started! This year I was inspired by green and white.  Perhaps it is because our Summer was full of browns here in California.

Green and White Fall Table

For years we didn’t really decorate for Fall because the traditional Fall colors didn’t really match the colors of our home.  No offense to bright orange found in pumpkins, but it just doesn’t really go in my house.

Then in recent years these fairytale pumpkins started showing up at farm stands and markets and it opened up an opportunity to use pumpkins that were not just orange!

Not that I’m poo-pooing orange all together.  Last year I decorated my table with blues and oranges.  This year I went to the opposite side of the color wheel and headed to the greens.

Each place setting has a Juliska dinner plate, a green antique Majolica plate (similar), and a Staub pumpkin cocotte.

We love using these pumpkin cocottes in the Fall for soups and stews.

I actually had a dream about this table: I used my green majolica plates in a table setting.  The centerpiece in my dream was TBD, but I woke up and ran with it!

For the centerpiece, I picked some olive branches from the garden.  How cute are the little olives?  I recommend using any sort of greenery from your garden.  I was originally going to use grapevines, but they were destroyed by white flies this year.  So I started eyeing the other plants in the garden and clipped a few olive tree branches.

Fall table decor

I also found some curious pieces of squash at the local farm stand – in green and white!  I dug through their big flat of odd squash to find the perfect colors.

These blue/green pumpkins are fairytale pumpkins, the variety is Jarrahdale.  They came from a local farm, but in previous years I have been able to grow my own.   This year we planted our own patch – 13 plants to be exact.  So far only 4 pumpkins have grown, two of which were these white baby boo pumpkins here.   I don’t think we watered them enough and then they got attacked by white flies.

You can look past just green and white for nontraditional Fall decorating.  When you look at the color palette for Fall, it is actually a whole rainbow of colors.

There are oranges, yellows, and reds, yes that’s obvious.  But look closer… the leaves still have green, as do pears and apples.   There are jewel tones – look at the figs and plums.  I wrote a post here about using pinks for Fall.  Metallics also go very well with Fall decor!  There are shades of brown from wheat and drying grasses. You can paint your own pumpkins to get the color you want – there are tons of tutorials on Pinterest.  Can’t find a color you like? Velvet pumpkins come in a variety of colors too.

Look to your own garden for Fall table decor. I’m sure you can find something to bring in and use on the table! And if you want the easiest way of using non traditional colors on your Fall table, just create a floral arrangement of whatever you desire and then throw a few white pumpkins on it!

That concludes my Fall tablescape tour.

Nothing to me says Summer quite like sunflowers.  I love the yellow against the black and the white Mackenzie Child’s Courtly check!

The drapes are pulled because it is HOT out. 100 degrees! Too hot for me.sunflower dining room

I’ve slowly been expanding my courtly check collection.  It all started with these candle sticks.  Then the placemats and napkin rings. The pitcher is new this year.

A sunny table for a sunny day!

black and white table with sunflowers

I actually had a dream about creating this table.  I guess you could say I dreamt it up – literally! Sometimes some of my best design ideas come from my dreams in my sleep.   Does that happen to you? black and white table with sunflowers

It happens to my Mom too, in fact, we call it “Schlafkreativ” – meaning sleeping creativity in German.  We made up that word, btw, but in German you can make up words by adding words together, no, really! It’s called compound German words.    If you’re curious, you can read all about German compound words here.black and white table with sunflowers

Okay, back to the table.  I decided to leave the white tablecloth underneath the placemats to make a nice white base for the black and white check.

Love this little pitcher I bought earlier this year!  You can totally use it for serving… but I have only used it as a vase so far!

I’m so excited to share this fun blue and white table setting for Summer!

I received my French bistro chairs last week and was so excited to show them off!

They are actually going to be used outside – but we are building a pool and there’s construction people and a mess back there and I didn’t want them getting ruined.

blue and white table setting with French bistro chairs and peonies

So they found a temporary home in the breakfast nook!

Then the next day, I was at Costco and found these gorgeous peonies.  I love the dark pink color!

I’ll never tire of peonies! My favorite flower.  If you’ve missed it, I wrote about everything you need to know about peony care here.

The plates are Spode “Blue Italian”.

Found them for a song at Home Goods and naturally couldn’t pass them up!

Pitcher is by Juliska and chargers are from Hobby Lobby.  The gold cutlery is plastic! See, you can mix cheap with expensive!  You wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t told you.

What are your Summer plans? Mine are to *hopefully* sit in my pool… but it’s not done. So maybe it will be next Summer!

Oh, and I made French strawberry pistachio macaron cakes!  Recipe up later this week, so stay tuned!

Valentine's Day Tea Party

You can add your Valentine’s Day posts at the end of this post up until Valentine’s Day!!  Also, a big thank you to Amber from Follow The Yellow Brick Home for arranging this blog hop!

For this tea party, I used my favorite tea pot – this Mackenzie Childs tea pot!  I love the black and white check against the pink and green!

Valentine's Day Tea Party Idea

I gathered up my vintage tea cups for this tea party.  The tea cup with the wreath is actually a chocolate cup – but I don’t care! Tea, chocolate… we can drink what we want from it! The cup is by Dresden.

The black plate on the bottom left is from Juliska and I love that it appears vintage – but it is microwave and dishwasher safe!  (similar one here)

Valentine's Day Tea Party Idea

A Valentine’s day tea party would not complete without chocolates! These truffles I purchased solely because I loved the box! haha!  The lace runner is antique – keeping with today’s vintage theme!
Valentine's Day Laduree chocolates and macarons

For the centerpiece I used an antique American brilliant cut glass pitcher.  Want to know a secret?? The tulips here are actually faux tulips – great for using in cut glass vases because there are no water lines left over that are difficult to scrub out!

Pink Valentine's Day Tea Party

A tea party at Petite Haus would not be complete without macarons and madeleines!   When I don’t feel like baking them, I buy the madeleines at Costco and the macarons at Trader Joe’s. Valentine's Day Pink tea party

I realized that this little tea party is a great idea for bridal showers.  Jordan almonds are in the little pink box below.

Carnations are such a pretty flower with a fresh scent. They last a long time too – great budget option for flowers.   I love using vintage tea cups as vases – also a great idea for bridal showers.romantic pink table centerpiece - perfect for tea parties, bridal showers and weddings

The theme for my Christmas table this year was inspired by my Christmas tablecloth – a Gingerbread Christmas table!

Gingerbread Christmas Table Setting

We picked up this tablecloth several years ago at Williams-Sonoma.   I love the gingerbread houses on it!  Then I had a lightbulb! Ah ha! I’ll put gingerbread houses on my table!Gingerbread Christmas Table Setting

Last year during the after Christmas sales, I found these adorable gingerbread house napkin ring holders!

Gingerbread Christmas Table Setting

I had attempted to bake my own gingerbread houses from scratch for this.  It was a fail.  I rolled them too thick and then the icing was a bit too thin.  Needless to say, they fell apart despite my best efforts.  Oh well. I found these cute gingerbread houses instead.  Don’t they look real? Had me fooled in the store!

Gingerbread Christmas Table Setting

A few of the gingerbread remain though from my baking – so it wasn’t a complete disaster!

Gingerbread Christmas Table Setting

Here is a good look at the table cloth! I just adore it.  The trees have elements of the 12 days of Christmas in it!Gingerbread Christmas Table Setting

My favorite Christmas punchbowl has been the Christmas centerpiece since I bought it.  I am sure it will be the centerpiece for years!  It is filled with pomanders and cinnamon sticks. Smells delightful as you can imagine!Gingerbread Christmas Table Setting

Fresh cedar garland remains – however I will have to move it when my relatives show up for Christmas so I can seat more at the table!

Gingerbread Christmas Table Setting

A few plates of sweets decorate the table too.  I notice I eat the most sweets per day in December above all the months.

Then I thought, oh! I have my theme!

Inspired from the phantom’s lair full of candelabras, as seen below from the movie.

I used these antique French altar candelabras as my base.

Red roses are the other main theme – the phantom gave Christine red roses.

When I was looking for inspiration for my Fall table this year, I saw this beautiful tartan throw and instantly found my color palette!

cozy and romantic Fall table setting

Last year I was inspired by an antique paisley shawl.  It seems I am finding my color palette inspiration from nontraditional table cloths – shawls and throws!

cozy and romantic Fall table setting

I mentioned in my Fall Home Tour last week how I used to be an orange hater.  Yes, I have had these orange Juliska plates for several years, but that is the only orange thing I have owned.

cozy and romantic Fall table setting

But then this year I’ve expanded my collection of Juliska and have been using these blue plates intermittently this year.

When I pulled my orange plates out of storage and set them on top of the blue plates, I knew I had a winning combination.

Don’t you love how the orange pumpkins go with the pretty delft blue?

Do you dine with candlelight?

I love these dripping candles on the antique English open barley twist candlesticks.

Adding the lit candles make this table feel extra cozy and warm.

All of the warmer dark woods in the room are so perfect for Fall – I predict, by the way, that darker woods will be making a comeback here soon.  But that’s another blog post on its own!

I couldn’t stop snapping pictures of this photogenic table.

This year we tried to grow these Jarrahdale pumpkins – every year we’ve been successful except this year. They are just not growing. So I found these at the local farmer’s market.

In this post – a French lavender farmhouse table setting

this post may contain affiliate links.

I posted a picture on Instagram recently of a lavender table setting I put together several years ago – and I thought, oh! I should make another one!

I love using lavender in my decor.  All of this lavender I dried from our garden!

The trick to drying lavender is to harvest your lavender just before it is about to bloom!

I dry the lavender in my closet! It provides a nice aroma and keeps moths away.

I stuck lavender in these mini glass candle holders. Some earthquake hold inside keeps the lavender propped up.

The grapes are also from the garden… the first year we have enjoyed any grapes! Did you know California is the world’s fourth largest grape producer? Well, wine grapes, that is. These ones are table grapes!

Growing grapes is not easy – you have to spray for flies and mold. And then you have to fight the birds!

You may have noticed the grapes and bread are served on antique purple transfer ware.

Now, instead of a baguette we have slices of San Francisco Sourdough – this is California, after all. That’s why I like to sometimes call my style California French Farmhouse!

I used vintage ribbons as napkin rings.

Can I confess though, that this table was not set for a party! It was set for my family.

I would have set for just four of us but then the table looks silly when it is only set halfway!

Do you ever set the table “just” for your family?

Why should we set tables for parties? They should be set every day, if I had it my way.

I also love these scalloped plates I got at Williams Sonoma earlier this year!!

I hope you all enjoyed this farmhouse table.

This is just my ideal style – a touch of France, a touch of farmhouse, and a touch of California!

Peonies are my favorite flower, as you all know! I named my blog after them!

Then on the way home with the peonies, we pulled over to pick some strawberries from a local stand and they had sweet peas too!

Setting this French country style table was simple.  I pulled out a French linen runner for the center.

I used two small Juliska vases to hold the sweet peas.

The colors of the sweet peas are so pretty! Prettier than the ones at the store!

The blue goblets go with the runner.  I also love the new plates from Aerin at WS.

Each place setting has a sweet pea nestled on the plate.

I just love peonies. They are so photogenic!

The peony season is short lived so I had to take many photos!

The sweet peas only lasted 2 days! I couldn’t believe how short-lived they were!

In this post – a Farmhouse Patriotic Table Setting for Fourth of July and Independence Day Decorations

I love setting tables – especially for holidays but I find that frequently patriotic tables appear too kitschy in my opinion.

For this patriotic table I was inspired by the antique transfer ware plates that usually sit in the cabinet or hanging on the walls.

This patriotic table has a little more muted colors of the flag – light reds and pinks replace the bold red that is usually present.

I chose peonies for this table, because one they are my favorite flower, and two, they kind of reminded me of fireworks!

A trio of goblets (for red wine, white wine, and water if you are going super formal) also echo the red, white and blue on our flag.

Vintage zinc lanterns are perfect for this farmhouse patriotic table.

Yes, the transferware plates are there for looks – the real plate that everyone eats off of is the scalloped edge white plate below – a new find from Aerin for Williams Sonoma.

You can create a patriotic table that has simple elegance – I kept it less formal by using burlap chargers and leaving out the table cloth!

This table can easily be translated for outdoor dining as well.

I’ve included sources for you for the new items – the rest are all antique or vintage or I cannot find the source!

Hopefully this table inspired you to create a beautiful patriotic table in your home too.

A Romantic English Garden Rose Table

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

It is definitely rose week here in California! The roses are in full bloom.

When you drive up the driveway the scent of roses wafts through the air in my garden.

So I thought I would bring the fresh flowers in and set a beautiful table!

So with my rose clippers in one hand and a French basket in the other, off I went to the garden.

I must have picked a hundred roses (or more)!

The garden roses are all from David Austin’s variety.  I just love David Austin roses – I love the old world feel of them.

You can create a similar table too. Just head off to your garden and clip away!

Because garden roses usually have short stems, I would suggest placing them in bud vases or a container with short edges.

Here I used rectangle metal galvanized zinc boxes with floral foam placed inside to keep them moist and in place.

Each place setting has its own rose bud – when the guest sits down they can smell the rose bud so that way they don’t have to lean awkwardly over the table to enjoy the aroma of the roses.

The garden roses actually remind me of my all time favorite flower, the peony, with all of their layers of petals!

Using garden roses is an inexpensive way to add romance and glamour to your table.

the rose on the plate is the queen of sweden

If this were done by a florist it would cost $$$ – but for me, just the price of floral foam and containers!

Oh, and tender loving care on the roses all year.

The plates are from Juliska and the scene on them is that of an English country estate – so really, quite fitting for the theme of this table!

The rose on this plate is Heathcliff

The pink goblets are vintage French and the crystal goblets are antique American brilliant cut glass.

The following David Austin Roses were used: Charlotte, Lady of Shallot, Crown Princess Margareta, Sombreil, Jude the Obscure, Eden, Gentle Hermione, Queen of Sweden, Heathcliff,  James Galway, and Scepter’d Isle.

It is a rose candle – it smells so good!

A few new chairs were added too – got them for an absolute steal at Restoration Hardware outlet.

If you are going to recreate this centerpiece – just cut your flowers in the morning with as long as stems as possible.  I did a mixture of the varieties but it would look just as pretty to use one variety!

Recently I have been drawn to the color orange – I wrote about that here in my coral/persimmon inspiration post. I think it is because the orange makes blue look even better!

I love using my tulipiere.

It is such an usual vase.

The tulipiere is filled with three different colors of ranunculus and two-toned tulips.

Little sprigs of Muscari finish the look and their bright blue goes so well with the oranges and peach colors!

I took a hundred pictures. I couldn’t stop snapping.

Snap snap snap.

The pink goblets are vintage French.

The blue plate and goblet are Juliska.

I found these in the drawer and forgot I had them – oops, should have used them for the Easter table!

Oh well, this is a Spring table and let me tell you – we have *hundreds* of rabbits around here.

Jack rabbits – not the cute fluffy kind.

These rabbits have snaggle teeth and huge pointy ears – and boy can they run!

Yah… run into my garden and eat it if the fence gate is open!

Snap snap snap.

I wish the flowers would stay like this forever and not wilt.

About these tea light candle holders – they were bronze in color but we painted them years ago. I try to envision again how they look in bronze.

The table cloth goes nicely with the pinks and blues!

The table cloth is antique.  It is a Madeira table cloth.  It is made of organdy, applique, and embroidery.

Snap snap snap.

Don’t you love the blue with the orange? J’adore.

Ok maybe I should have edited this post and taken one of these photos out.

But I can’t. I love them all.

This table is perfect for the Spring – but could easily convert to a Fall table with changing of the table cloth and the candle holders!
