I got this French bench a while ago and never blogged about it!

This bench was from the Restoration Hardware Outlet store.  Yes, they have an outlet store!  You can find most things in the store at 30% off normal price… but sometimes there are defects.  You also have to keep going back as they get new shipments in every week if you’re looking for something.

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

Having a bench at the foot of the bed is really nice.  It’s a nice spot to sit and put on your shoes…. and collect stuff. like clothes. purses. extra pillows.  Of course, we wouldn’t show it like how it really looks everyday in the pictures, right??

RH is still selling the bench I purchased… except I got mine for $140. It retails for $395.

World market sells this one…

World Market Paige Dining Bench

Eloquence Inc has a nice bench; I think my Mom may own this one…

Eloquence inc Boudoir Bench

Ballard Designs sells one as well…

What do you think of benches at the end of the bed? I love mine!!

Weekend Whimsy #10

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Good Morning!  I just had a nice week of much-needed vacation as I had literally worked every single day for 3 weeks *except* 1 day. Le SIGH.  But this week I had some nice R&R first at the Ojai Valley Resort Inn and Spa then a little stay-cation at home full of cleaning and… blogging!!

Since I’ve had time to do some blogging, I thought I would mention that I am trying to adhere to a blogging posting schedule… Mondays, Wednesdays, and then Friday Favorites, followed by Weekend Whimsy on Saturday.  That’s FOUR days a week! Woo!!!

In case you hadn’t noticed, I changed my #weekendwhimsy header to an ocean theme… picture taken in Maui!

Enough talk, on to my links for the weekend…

//1// This French Tea Party theme is soo incredibly cute.  I cannot believe how cute the croquembouche is with the flowers! (what’s more amazing is I spelled croquembouche right the first time!) EDIT – I fixed the link, it should now go to a tea party and not an Irish Wedding!

//2// Since it is Memorial Day weekend, I decided to take a little internet tour of Ralph Lauren’s All-American homes… check out his Bedford NY home and Colorado Ranch!

//3// While the phone cameras are getting really nice, this article highlights why we still need a “real” camera.  I can attest to this, the photos I shot of Paris with the DSLR are much nicer than my iPhone ones!

//4// Since I know all y’all gonna be BBQ’ing at some point this weekend, why don’t you make some of these grilled garlic parmesan fries. I never met a potato I didn’t like.

//5// I have seen these Twix Cookies all over the internet and they are haunting me as they look so good.

Well, that’s a wrap. Have a nice Memorial Day. RIP Grandpa, Oma, and Opa.

I had so much fun with last week’s Friday Favorites that I decided to do it again!!

Pretty Peonies
I just *love* peonies (um, obviously as my blog name is peonies & orange blossoms) and I FINALLY found some. They were Trader Joe’s for a reasonable price.  So I snapped them up.  They have been so pretty watching them open up!

We took this slo-mo video of the peonies opening up in my tulipiere and you need to watch it.  It is SO pretty and it’s amazing how fast the peonies opened up!  This video was taken over a time period of 4 hours.

Peonies blooming from Angelina B on Vimeo.

PiYo
PiYo stands for Pilates-Yoga and it is a new workout video set that I ordered from Beach Body.  I am trying it because it helps build strength while increasing your flexibility.  As we all know, the more flexible you are, the less likely you are to get injured.  It sounds like it’s easy but when I’m done with a session I’m soaked in sweat!

This is how I think I look when I’m doing PiYo…

But I think this is how I actually look…

Have you ever done PiYo before? What do you think? Leave a comment!

Weekend Trip to Ojai!

We went to Ojai this weekend and stayed at the Ojai Valley Inn Resort & Spa.  The hotel grounds were so pretty.  There is a full golf course, multiple pools, a beautiful restaurant under old oak trees, and a wonderful spa.  The husband and I both went to the spa and enjoyed some much-needed massages.  I can now touch my chin to my chest post-massage.  See, massages are therapeutic!

Unfortunately the weather is a bit chilly, too cold to get into the pool.  Oh well, I suppose I can avoid skin cancer this time.

Game of Thrones
*spoiler alert* *spoiler alert*
Well, apparently I can’t help myself talking about GoT.  The show is just soooo good. Do you watch it?  This week our poor Lady Sansa married the crazy guy.  Why does Sansa always get screwed? Seriously.  The poor girl can’t catch a break.  Did you like the attitude she handed to that other girl though! You Go Girl! Here’s what I think will end up happening… the Boltons will die in a fight and Lady Sansa will eventually return as ruler of the Stark House of the North.  Right??  Her wedding was eerily beautiful though.  OH. And Queen Margery is a dead woman.  Queen Cersei is so clever… no one mess with a Mother Hen!

Strawberries
Strawberries are in season and I was playing around with my camera and took this pretty picture.  Everyone’s been posting these delicious looking strawberry recipes but I have a confession: I like them plain the best (if they are sweet enough, that is!).  We got these strawberries from a farmer in Oxnard, California.  Did you know that the state of California produces over 85% of America’s strawberries??  That’s a lot of strawberries.

strawberry fields forever

Patriotic Table Decorations for Memorial Day

With Memorial Day just around the corner, I put together this patriotic tablescape with the red, white, and blue in mind!

Patriotic Table Decorations with red charges, blue plates, and white placemats!

For this table setting, I brought out the four blue Juliska plates that I have that usually hang on the wall. I like how they contrast with the red chargers that I usually use at Christmas.

I also pulled out my lanterns to place on the side; the candles are automatic and turn on at night!

Patriotic Tablescape

I just happened to have fresh red roses that DH got me for our anniversary.  Aren’t they pretty?  For your patriotic table decorations at home you could use any white or red flowers as your centerpiece. Blue flowers are a bit harder to come by!

Patriotic Tablescape for Memorial Day or the 4th of July

What I like about this table is that it isn’t in-your-face with patriotism.  It is more subtle.

PARIS POSTS
I know I’ve been back from Paris for TWO weeks but I took a gazillion million pictures and I’m having a hard time picking and choosing and sifting through them.  A trip report is coming… SOME DAY.  In the mean time, I’m still pretending like I haven’t worked the past 6 of 7 days in a row (with 2 more to go, yes I need to leave for work soon) and instead pretending I’m eating some macarons in the Tuileries garden…

YES this was real life two weeks ago.

See, I can’t make this stuff up. Look. Look at this below, a SWAN in a real fairytale village.  I promise when I get my pictures and posts up you will want to read them!

#isthisreallife?

NEW SHOES:
For our 2 year wedding anniversary this week, my husband and I gave each other new tennis shoes.  YAY!  We both like to work out together and we both haven’t had a new pair in like… 5 years. That’s a long time. Especially for a shoe horse like myself. I got the Saucony Ride 7 and my husband got the Nike Zoom Structure 18.  We both love them.  Links are below.

#TBT to my wedding week. Or is it #TBF? (Throwback Friday?)
I couldn’t not include at least one picture from my wedding as I happen to think it was the most beautiful wedding of all time ever. ha! I’m biased, okay??

Here’s a little wedding peek-a-boo…

Ok so I kinda loved my dress and shoes.  Shoes were CHANEL. OMG. drool. Dress was Monique Lhuillier. love. swoon. sigh. sigh again.

I did not have a traditional wedding cake.  We had a French gateau.  AKA”Le Fraisier”.  It is essentially a French strawberry shortcake.  Confession: I don’t like normal cake that much.  So we had a cake in the center with a whole bunch of mini French gateaus and sweets on a bar.

Le Fraisier French Wedding Cake // Peonies & Orange Blossoms

Oh the flowers. They were so pretty. Peonies, garden roses, lily of the valley, sweet pea, and fuchsias.  Why did they have to wilt and die??

Wedding Bouquet Table Flowers: peonies, garden roses, sweet pear, lily of the valley, fuchsias.

GAME OF THRONES
*SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT*
Do you watch game of thrones??  I don’t know why but I looooove this show.  Even though it’s so gruesome.  The plot is just so good.  When I watch it, time goes by so fast. I feel like I’ve just sat down and then BAM. 1 hour was gone and it’s over.  And that’s the sign of a good show.  It makes you feel like you’ve left reality for a while.  Can we talk about Jorah though?  Jorah was my hero. For real.  Of course, after Ned Stark.  But Ned Died.  And now Jorah is gonna die. He’s got the stone man disease. Nooooo!  I guess I have to find another hero (for now).  I’m rooting for Stannis Baratheon.  He’s one of the few who’s smart and seems to have a plan.

WEEKEND TRIP
This weekend my husband and I are headed to the Ojai Valley Resort for some R&R and to celebrate our anniversary.  I’m so excited.  Confession. I wanted to go here because I saw it on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.  My husband was like, um, how’d you find out about this hotel? It’s like, in the middle of nowhere? And I’m like, uh, I heard about it, somewhere. And then I fessed up.  I saw it on the trashy tv show you don’t like! GAAH.

Last thing, a FUNNY STORY
So I was talking to one of my patients this week, a 10 year old girl.  She had just started her menarche the week before for the first time ever.  So I asked her how she liked it.  She looked at me and said “WOOF”.  Her Mom and I LOL’d forever.  I’m still giggling.  Yep, pretty much sums that up.

OMG, I had so much fun writing this!   Should I do this again? Seriously though, I’ve gotta get to work now.

I did a ton of window shopping in Paris.  As we all know, the Parisians are a little bit ahead of us in the fashion department.  Trends start there and eventually trickle down to the masses.  Let me tell you what’s coming next in the shoe world… gold shoes.  Specifically gold flats and sneakers.

I put together a board of shoes that seemed very similar to the ones I saw in Paris just recently.  In fact, several of them I did see!   Which one is your favorite?  Click on each shoe for more details…

Beginner’s Guide to Lusterware China: Lusting for Lustreware

In my local antique mall I have noticed a lot of pink lustreware come up for sale.  Now, I haven’t bought any (yet), but it inspired me to go look up information about lustreware.

Cup and Saucer from President Teddy Roosevelt’s estate source

Lustreware (or Lusterware) is a pottery with a metallic glaze that gives the special effect of iridescence.  The final glaze lustre is usually composed of different metallic ingredients.  Lustre pottery is nothing new… it’s been around since the 13th century.

It started to become commercially available around 1790.  This was when the pottery companies in Staffordshire, England (so Spode and Wedgwood) figured out how to apply gold into the glaze that then turned pink.  The gold iridescent pink pottery grew very popular.

There are four principle colors of lustreware: silver/platinum, copper/brown, gold, and pink/purple.

The most desirable pieces are from the peered of 1790-1800 with the soft rose-pink glaze.

I think the reason I’ve been seeing a lot for sale is because is was popular into the 1940’s… and well, frankly, the estate sales these days feature items from the 1940s-1960s.

Not everything was plates and teapots.  Here is a hen-on-a-nest!! It has both pink/purple and copper color waves of lustre!

Now what to do with your collection?  You could put your lustreware plates on the wall..

Martha Stewart did… back in 1995! It’s been fashionable though, since the 1790s, so she can’t get all the credit.

Buying a Louis Vuitton on Paris… yes, it’s cheaper!

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

As you all know, I had been excited for months knowing that I was going to buy a Louis Vuitton in Paris!  I know to a lot of people this isn’t any big deal… who would get so excited about buying a purse anyway?  But to me, my day of shopping in Paris will be full of memories.

And yes, it’s true, buying a LV in Paris is cheaper than buying one in the US (so long as the dollar is strong).

Guide to Buying a Louis Vuitton in Paris... yes, it is cheaper!

I’m writing today about my experience buying a LV in Paris! I’ll break down the cost in this post.

Now, I thought I had decided what purse I was going to get before I went.  But then when I got there they had just put out a brand new purse that was “10 days old”; one I had never seen before.  And of course I had to have it.

This is the purse I bought…

picture from LV

I had been thinking I wanted a purse in the blue and white print, aka the Damier Azur but then I thought I was going to get the classic speedy bag in the classic print.  But then I saw this one with the pink interior and knew this was the one!

 A view from the side…

The other nice thing about this purse is that it has 3 separate compartments in it.  I really like the zippered center so I can put my wallet in it.

There are several different LV stores in Paris.  Before I went, I read some people’s favorite LV was in St. Germain because it was less crowded.  I went to that one, and while it was less crowded, it also had less stuff.

I highly recommend going to the flagship store on the Champs Elysees.  If you want to avoid crowds, get there right when it opens.  If you go later in the afternoon, there will be a line.  I went there when it opened and there were hardly any people in the store.  How could you not want to wander through 5 stories of LV products??

all of the LV stores in Paris

Okay, let’s talk about money.  Since I had a hard time finding out on the internet before I left if an LV was cheaper or not in Paris, I’ll break it down for you for here.

The purse I purchased was 1200 Euros total (1000 for the purse and 200 for the VAT).  VAT is a tax.

We will be receiving 144 Euros back from the VAT refund.

Now, let’s convert it to dollars. (in 2015).

In US dollars, we paid $1295 for the purse.  Plus a $34 foreign credit card transaction fee.

We received approx. $160 back from the VAT refund.

The total US dollar purchase price with the credit card fee and VAT refund was $1169.

The price for the purse on the LV website in the US is $1820.   The purse was $651 cheaper in Paris than in the United States.

I want to clarify, I’m not saying $1169 is a good deal for a purse. Yes, it’s an expensive splurge.  I’m just saying, if you are going to buy one and are going to Paris soon… get it there.  You can tell the price differences by logging into the Louis Vuitton France website vs the Louis Vuitton US website.

Now, How do you get the VAT refund??

At the LV store, they will fill out a VAT form for you.  You *must* have your passport with you when you purchase the purse or any other products that are over 165 Euros.  If you purchase over 165 Euros at one store, you qualify for the VAT refund.  You will only be able to earn it if you bring your passport.  Got it?

Now, getting the refund at Charles de Gaulle.  We left out of Terminal 2E.  The customs office is somewhere between check-in area 2 and 3 I believe.  You must have your goods with you and you must do if *before* you check your bags.  If you check your bags and then the customs agent wants to look at your goods, you won’t get your refund.

You need to have all of your VAT refund receipts with you, your purchased goods, as well as your passport and either your ticket for the airplane or your printed itinerary from the airline.  We did not have our actual ticket for the plane yet and they let us use our itinerary.  You must also do it the day you leave from Paris; you can’t go there early and do it.

Once they approve the form, go over to the big yellow Poste box and throw it in the mail. You do not need a stamp.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to do this.  Our flight left really early in the morning so there was no line, but they had a large area roped off for a line that I’m assuming would be completely full later in the day.

Other tips… tell Louis Vuitton that it’s a gift.  They will wrap it up in a very nice gift box for you!  They will do this in the US as well.  The gift box *almost* didn’t fit in my suitcase.  But I just barely squeezed in it and voila! Made it home!

a beautiful gift box to place a beautiful bag in!

I certainly hope you found my buying a LV in Paris guide useful!

I’ve been inspired by my recent trip to France to make this simple French country table setting!

Dried lavender from my parent’s garden is in the Le Lapin French water pitcher.

At each place setting there are two simple pieces of lavender with name card holders made from wine corks.  For this setting, I put down my favorite Parisian bakery/pastry shop names to remind me of my trip!

The wine cork place name card holders were actually used at my wedding.  Needless to say I used to have about 120 of them… all made by my Dad (thanks Dad!)

A look from the head of the table… the faux-lavender in the anduze pot is from one of my favorite shops in St. Helena (in the Napa valley).

Just got back from my trip… had this post saved and ready!

With wedding season just around the corner, I thought I’d share some tropical wedding bouquet pictures I had saved on my computer.

The major theme is orchids in all different colors.  However there are peonies, roses, hydrangeas, camellias, gardenias,  and lilies in the bouquets too.

Have you seen my Hawaii Wedding Locations Guide?

Thanks for stopping by, don’t forget to check out my Hawaii Wedding Locations Guide

Search terms: tropical wedding bouquet, tropical bridal bouquet, orchid bridal bouquet, peonies and orchid bouquet, hawaiian wedding bouquet, hawaiian bridal bouquet, hawaiian flowers, orchid rose bridal bouquet

*note* these pictures are not my own. I saved them on my computer a while ago.  If there are yours and you would like them removed, inform me.
