Since I’m now co-hosting Thursday Favorite Things, I figured I couldn’t have two posts in a week called “Favorite Things”. So I’ve changed my previously titled “Friday Favorites” to “Five on Friday”.  Same stuff, different name.  I think I just like a lot of things is the problem!

2. Kate Spade’s Valentine’s Gift Guide

You need to go check out the Valentine’s day gift guide. Everything is so cute!  I picked out my favorites. No, I wasn’t paid by KS to write about this. I just loooove Kate Spade!!

This cute phone case…

I already have a Kate Spade wallet but this one is so cute…

and, oh my gosh, a pail of roses! Not really, it’s a purse, but seriously, how cute is it? Practical? No. Adorable? YES!

3. This floral arrangement. Isn’t it dreamy?? I wish I could recreate this at home!!

4. Jo Malone Herb Garden Collection

Jo Malone will be introducing 5 new scents in March!  I love Jo Malone Colognes and I am interested to try these latest scents.  What I love about Jo Malone is that she does scent mixing – so you can mix different scents and blend them and they go really well together.

5. Ummm, I guess it’s Spring??

Sooooo… the daffodils we planted last Fall started blooming this week. WHAT?!!!!  It’s still January. Like, the whole rest of the country just had a massive blizzard and over here our daffodils are blooming. I can’t believe it!!  I mean I knew Spring came early in California but I didn’t know it was *this* early! Not that I’m complaining, I’m totally ready for Spring (and for it not to be dark at 5pm!).

I guess it doesn’t even matter what the Groundhog has to say next week… Spring is here!

I’m excited to share with you all a chalk paint cabinet makeover that I did.  It took me a total of 4 hours – start to finish. No joke! It’s super easy to do! The nice part about chalk paint is that you don’t have to apply a base or a topcoat. You just start painting and voila! You’re done!  While I know there a million tutorials online, this is just my review of using the paint!

AFTER – Annie Sloan Cabinet Makeover

I saw so many tutorials I thought I ought to see what the big deal is with chalk paint. The cabinet I started with is actually one my Grandfather made. He used to build cabinets and he literally had hundreds of them laying around his house and outside.  This one is the one he kept in his bedroom, so I’m assuming it was one of his favorites since he chose it for himself.

Cabinet BEFORE

When he passed away, I knew I wanted one of the cabinets. I chose this one.  Unfortunately, the color of the wood is not my thing. I didnt want to have it laying around in the garage, so I knew that I had to fix it up.  Opa (as we called him) never painted wood. He thought wood should be shown in its natural glory. So let’s not tell him we painted it.

I like the vintage shabby chic feel of the cabinet!

Before painting, I wiped the spiderwebs off and sanded down a few parts of rough surfaces.  Then, I just applied one coat of Paris Grey. Just one coat! That’s it. It dries super fast and honestly the top of the cabinet was dry before I was even half way done! (Granted it WAS 100 degrees that day!) I couldn’t believe how EASY using chalk paint was! SO EASY!!

To give it a little bit of texture and aged finish, I did brush some clear wax onto parts and rub it in.   I used the special wax brush for this.  After using the brush, I used an old t shirt and rubbed the wax in to get rid of the clumps. It made the paint color a little darker.  You can kind of notice it at the bottom of the cabinet in the picture above. The wax helps seal the paint. If you’re painting a dresser or a piece with high use, you NEED to put wax on it to help with wear and tear.

For the brown trim around the glass, I applied some dark wax.  To apply the dark wax, I just used an old t-shirt and rubbed it in.Then, after applying the dark wax I applied clear wax on top. I used the wax brush to apply the clear wax. Then I rubbed it in with an old t-shirt. The dark wax filled into the deeper crevices and made the trim stand out more.

What about Buying Annie Sloan’s Paint Brushes?? – now, they will try to sell you one brushes when you go into one of their stockists.  I actually did buy their special wax brush to apply the wax. Then I used a regular paint brush for the chalk paint itself.

I don’t need to explain to you how to do it. Annie Sloan’s Website has many video tutorials. It’s so super easy, but go watch some of the videos before you start!

I also used the Purple Painted Lady’s tutorials. She has lots of information and videos as well.

Here, my cabinet is filled with little treasures. Some faux hens and chicks candles, little houses, favorite Paris postcards, mini steins, German handmade angels, favorite little napkins! I actually hung it in a powder room. I love the new old cabinet! Plus, I can still keep my Opa’s cabinet!

Sitting in the center of the kitchen island is this Winter centerpiece I created. The chef tree went away and out came my beloved antique dough bowl!

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

I filled the dough bowl with pinecones of different sizes, both real and white candle pinecones.  The centerpiece are two little white candle houses and tree.  Some faux greenery is tucked away in the bowl as well.

Two boxwood wreaths hang above the little scene. These wreaths are I think two years old… a spritz of fresh water every 1-2 months keeps them fresh.

I will confess, I actually have a Valentine Heart now sitting in the center of the boxwood wreaths, but I took these pictures before I did that!

It’s FRIDAY! FRIYAY! This week I have some exciting news to share…

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

We got a new kitty cat!! We named her Chloe.  We rescued he from the animal shelter last weekend.  She cried the whole way home (with tears… never seen a cat cry tears).  She is estimated to be about 3 years old (although I think she is older). She has been a sweet little kitty so far. She is a Russian Blue Mix.

She likes nap time and cuddles. She purrs all of the time.   We are slowly introducing her to the house. We’ve been enjoying our little kitty friend so far. Her pretty green eyes glow. She is napping next to me right now.

These Ugg Boots.…I want to talk about these Ugg boots I got for Christmas. At first I was a little unsure, as I didn’t want to be one of “those girls” wearing Ugg boots. But then I put them on and my feet were hugged with the softness I immediately understood why people wear them all of the time.  I have been wearing them nonstop since I got them. I haven’t worn mine outside, they are a about-the-house shoe for me, but seriously. Once you put them on you won’t want to take them off!

This candle. It was a splurge I used with my Nordstrom notes. I’ve always wanted to try this candle company. It’s by”Diptyque”, a company in Paris. The fragrance I purchased is one of their top sellers called “baies”. This scent has the freshness of roses and the smell of blackcurrant leaves. It is really nice and refreshing. It’s not just any type of rose, it uses Bulgarian roses which of course are more luxurious and have a fruity scent.   It smells so nice. Just opening the box up produces an aroma in the room.

This French Townhouse. You HAVE to see this beautiful townhouse. The story is on Cote de Texas’ blog.

Here is a pic of the outside of this complex. It’s designed to look like a Parisian city block. Isn’t it darling?

Look below! It really does look like a little slice of Paris -but with better plumbing and air conditioning! Sign me up! You really need to go check it out. The condo is decorated with fabulous French antiques. Here is the link again.  Pics are from that blog post.

Barbour Beadnell Coat Review and Style Ideas

I received a Barbour Beadnell coat for Christmas and I thought I would write about my opinions on the coat!
This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

The Barbour Beadnell coat is made of a waxed cotton. When it rains, the raindrops just drop right off of the wax.  It has a corduroy collar around the face which helps wick away the drops from your face.

It has two smaller pockets that you can put your hands that are lined with moleskin – it helps keep your hands nice and warm on wet rainy days! I love this feature!

The plaid is also cute and you can roll up the sleeve to show it off.

It also has two larger pockets – you can put your phone in it. There are holes at the bottom of these big pockets – small ones, built in on purpose, so if you happen to be sea shelling, you can put them in your coat and the water will drip right on out!

Barbour started in England in 1894.  It is one of the few companies to have received 3 royal warrants – from the Queen, Prince Philip and Prince Charles.

Barbour coats can last for years. You just have to send them into be re-waxed occasionally to keep them in tip top shape.  You can send them into Orvis if you live by one or the official Barbour store in the USA.

I love my coat. I bought the detachable hood for the coat and it is wonderful in the rain. It has a built in metal wire in it so the hood stays propped up and so it doesn’t fall in your face!

Here I am showing off my coat. Sorry for the phone pictures… it’s hard to take a picture of yourself!  I wanted to show how I like to wear it and show off the little hand pocket.

You can roll up the sleeve once and show off the cute little tartan plaid inside! You can also kind of see the plaid on the inside of the hood. I like to wear it with my riding boots and my brown LV.

Lots of celebrities wear the coats too…

How I imagine how the English really wear their boots and coats…

This is from a cute blogger, classy girls wear pearls…

And the picture below too…

from classy girls wear pearls

Below is another cute blogger, College Prepster, who wears her coat quite often…

from the college prepster

Below are some outfit idea boards I put together on how you can style your Barbour coat…

For board one, I like to wear my coat most with my riding boots. Pair it with a plaid shirt, some jeans (white or dark!), and a statement necklace.

The next look is for those rainy days…

Pair a chunky knit sweater with those Hunter rain boots and a nice scarf!

The next look is for running around town…

You can pair your stylish workout leggings with a grey sweatshirt. Can you believe grey sweatshirts are all the rage in Paris right now? Pair them with some low boots (or even tennis shoes) and a purse with a shoulder strap so you can do your errands or sightseeing!

Below, you can shop the post. Affiliate links are used.

All and all, I am loving my coat. It wasn’t cheap but I haven’t bought a new raincoat in 10 years. So I think it was time! I can say when I wear mine with my leather riding boots I feel positively English!

Hope you all enjoyed the post!

I thought I would share with you the tablescape I have on the main dining table right now.  I moved the white house and tree candles to the center.  Mixed in between are battery operated candles that come on automatically at night and create some nice ambience in the room.

I like the Winter Whites here… although to be honest I’m excited for the pinks of Spring…

These little bird napkin rings are so cute.. they are glitter birds sitting on a folded ribbon. I just love them!

I didn’t set up this table for any occasion, only for the husband and I to enjoy. That’s why there’s no plates or anything.

One last look at this Winter White table. I like the simplicity of it.

An English Tea with a Lemon Scone Recipe

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Doesn’t it look like Spring in the picture below?? We went to the flower market and bought some fresh flowers. January is so blah outside.  After arranging the flowers in the tulipiere, my Mom and I sat down and have a lovely Afternoon Tea like the Brits! Tea time certainly raises the mood on a blustery, wet ,and dreary day.

I like the ombre look this arrangement. Dark pink tulips on the bottom, light pink tulips in the middle, and white tuberose on top. The tuberose smells heavenly.

Now, onto the simple scone recipe. It was really easy to make. Took me less than an hour from start to finish.

Now, I initially wanted to make these scones from Simply Suzanne’s, but I didn’t have vanilla beans. But you know what I have? LEMONS. Lemons are coming out of my ears over here. We have so many Meyer lemon trees it borders on ridiculous. (I like the look of a lemon tree surrounded by lavender in the garden). So I added some lemon zest and made a lemon glaze to the simple cream scone recipe.

Lemon Scone Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 5 Tbsp unsalted butter, cut into little chunks and chilled
  • 1 cup heavy cream (slightly less than 1 cup)
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • juice of 1 lemon ** note: measure it out in a measuring cup so you know how much liquid you added!

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 450F. (I actually did it on 425 on convection bake)
  2. In a food processor, pulse together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together.
  3. Add the zest of one lemon and the lemon juice and pulse, about 3 times total.
  4. Scatter the butter on top of the flour mixture, then pulse together until it looks like coarse meal, about 12 pulses. (Or you can always cut the butter in with a pastry cutter, fork, small knife or even your hand!
  5. Now for measuring the cream… remember you measured the juice of 1 lemon? Now subtract the amount of juice of lemon from 1 cup and then add that amount of cream to the scone. For example, my lemon made 1/8 cup of juice, so I added 7/8 cup cream. I don’t have an exact number of how much cream to add because every lemon is a different size.Or if that’s too hard just add 1 cup of cream. Ok, stir the cream into the flour mixture.
  6. Now, put the mixture of the dough onto a floured counter surface and knead together until a slightly sticky ball forms, only about10 seconds. You do not want to over work the dough. Some large chunks of butter are okay.
  7. Pat the dough into a circle that’s about 9 inches, then slice into 8 wedges.
  8. Transfer the wedges to a baking sheet lined with Silpat or parchment paper.
  9. Bake until the the tops of the scones are lightly golden brown, approximately 12-15 minutes.
  10. Transfer to the wire rack and let cool at least 10 minutes before enjoying!

Lemon Glaze Recipe

  • 1 cup confectioner’s sugar (powdered sugar)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • 3-4 tsp of water, lemon juice, or milk

Mix together all of the ingredients in the glaze, adding more sugar or less liquid depending on how thick it is. Spread it on the scones.

The tea we enjoyed was purchased on our trip to Paris. It is Laduree’s House tea and it is really nice.  I wrote about my trip to the Laduree Tea Room here.

One last look at our nice little afternoon tea. We certainly felt British with the rain pouring outside today!

Cerused French Oak Kitchens and Cabinets – Kitchen Trend 2016

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Every year I have written a post about kitchens. One year I wrote about all-white kitchens. Last year I wrote about Greige (grey/beige) kitchens, and this year I’m writing about my new love, cerused French oak kitchens!

cerused oak cabinet
1 – source

Cerused means that the oak floor/cabinet has lime or wax applied into the grain of the wood to give it a little depth and contrast. I totally love how soft it makes the cabinets look.

limed oak cabinet
2- source

What I like about this picture is that you can see the lime or wax in the grain of the cabinets.

3- source, house beautiful

This one below has a little less obvious limed oak, but is definitely the blonde French White Oak!

This kitchen below hits all of the right notes… open shelves, aged wooden beams, white marble countertops, cerused oak cabinets…

8- source

9-Rustic Kitchen by South Pasadena Interior Designers & Decorators Charmean Neithart Interiors, LLC.

According to this article, the cerused oak look came from the 1940s from the French designer Jean-Michel Frank. The trend has come out of high-end furniture sales at auction from the late 2000’s… This cabinet which sold at Christies for 40k is considered one of the main inspirational pieces for this trend…

source

I just wanted to show you that this is not a *new* trend… here is an 18th century Belgian cabinet with the cerused oak. Granted, it has probably had a new finish applied from it’s original. Isn’t it beautiful?

source

One reason the two furniture pieces above, while both cerused, look different is because of the cuts of the oak. The Jean-Michel cabinet is made from rift-sawn oak, whereas the 18th century Belgian cabinet is made from plain sawn oak.

Below you can see an image showing you how you can cut the oak and get different views of the grains.  Can you guess which one is the least and then most expensive? If you guessed plain sawn as the cheapest, you are right! The rift sawn is the most expensive and is currently considered the most desirable… naturally it’s the one I like best! I’m always picking out the most expensive everything even when I have no idea about the product!

Here are two more furniture examples, both from Restoration Hardware with the cerused oak. They called it “Aged oak” or “Grey Oak” but it’s the same thing.

This cabinet below is from the new RH Modern collection… Although I prefer the antique looking cabinet above!

Back to the kitchen tour, This is one of my favorite kitchens. Very stylish with the steel windows! Although, dark floors are going “out”, but I still think they look pretty!

10 =photo: Atlanta homes & Life Styles

A more contemporary version, at first I thought the hood of the stove was a big screen tv!

12- source

Here is an example of a whitewashed white oak examples with grey undertones. It still has cerused wood. I like this look too.

13- Transitional Kitchen by Mamaroneck Kitchen & Bath Designers Studio Dearborn

Here is a very contemporary cerused black oak kitchen. I actually don’t hate this black kitchen. Normally I hate black kitchens  and really modern kitchens but the limed look softens it a bit.

14 –Contemporary Kitchen by Seattle Cabinets & Cabinetry Warmington & North

A trendy kitchen complete with the now in-style brass fixtures! I still can’t believe brass is back in style… and the fact that I like it. I think it’s because the brass is aged and not shiny from the 80s.

15- source

This one also has some grey undertones. You can really notice that these cabinets are rift sawn.

16- source

Here the island is a cerused French white oak… The very tight grout lines of the tile below are also tres chic.

17- source

The kitchen below hits all of the trends. Let’s review them, shall we? Steel windows. French oak plank floors AND ceiling. Waterfall effect island of white marble. Farmhouse sink. Cerused oak cabinets. Did we miss anything? Oh, no over-the-counter shelves.

18- source

Now, I love this kitchen from Brooke Gianetti.  She used a custom French white oak cabinet with a custom stain. I can’t tell if its cerused or not – I think it is. Like the farmhouse sink, chandeliers over the island, wood beam ceiling, overmudded backsplash behind the stove, wide French oak plan floors, and dare I say, I even like the brass fixtures!

19= source: Patina Farm

Now, I think the cabinet below is more whitewashed than cerused, but it’s just another example.

20- source

This kitchen from Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen does have greige cabinets on the sides, but the island is a cerused oak!

21- source

A more modern take on the look…

22- source

I like this kitchen below. Cerused cabinets in the way back with whitewashed cabinets in the front with travertine floors.

23- source

A contemporary cerused look. I like that the cerused cabinets make even harsh contemporary looks soften up a bit.

24- source

Here is a kitchen designed by Jeffrey Alan Marks, from the beloved Million Dollar Decorators (RIP) show. He used the white oak back in 2013, ahead of the times! That fish wallpaper is by DeGournay!

25- source

Are you liking this trend?

26- source

I have loved this kitchen for a long time. Windows on both sides of the stove bring in light. Two little chandeliers above the giant island. Greige/whitewashed cabinets in the back with cerused oak on the island. Overmudded limestone wall on the back. Aged wooden beams above. Travertine floors. I think I would want my kitchen to look like this.

27 – source

The kitchen below mixes two styles – cerused cabinets and greige island cabinets.

28 – Traditional Kitchen by Dallas Kitchen & Bath Designers Backline Renovations

Well, what do you think of this trend?? Is it a breathe of fresh air or does it remind you too much of your Grandma’s cabinets from the mid-century?

I want you all to tell me which one is your favorite in the comments – I put numbers below all of the pictures to make it easy for you! I’m really quite curious.  I think my favorite is #27.

Sources for the pictures are listed below it.

Alright peeps. I am back with Friday Favorites. I took a little bit of a hiatus during the Christmas season… mainly because I blog Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and I had too many posts for Christmas and had to bump Friday Favorites.  I guess I could have blogged even more frequently, but this is a hobby for me, not a job!

Let’s get started…

Barbour coat…
I got a new Barbour coat for Christmas! I am so excited about it! My old raincoat was falling apart. This new jacket is wonderful and much warmer than my old one. It is a Barbour Beadnell jacket… it is made of a waxed cotton that allows the rain to drip right off and it has a corduroy collar at the top to draw the mist away from your face. I got the Rustic color, as seen below in the next two pictures…

As you can see, Princess Kate (okay, I know her title is actually the Duchess of Cambridge, but if you marry a prince you’re a princess in my book!), anyway, Princess Kate wears one too!

Apple Watch

Ok, I had a very good Christmas. I got an apple watch too.  My favorite part of the watch is the simplest part… the Mickey Mouse face. Mickey dances by tapping his foot to every second as he keeps time. Every time I look down at my watch I smile! Plus, the health apps are pretty cool too. I like how it tells me to stand when I’ve been sitting too long. This is perfect if you have an office job!

The exact one I have is below, the rose gold sport version. The band is a little more purple in real-life. To be honest I think I’d rather have a navy band or a different color, but this one came with it so oh well!

And now… TV shows I’m watching (BESIDES Downton Abbey, which I wrote about HERE earlier this week).

Galavant

Returning with its second season to ABC, the musical comedy fairy tale is about a beautiful hero named Galavant, who embarks on his quest to marry Madalena. But he loses Madalena to King Richard. Madalena has overthrown King Richard and now Galavant and King Richard have started on their own journey…

BASICALLY… if you liked “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” You will like this show. That’s the short version.

Mozart in the Jungle

This show is only on Amazon Prime. It is about a new conductor coming to the New York Symphony and also an up and coming oboeist.  If you like symphonies, you will like this show. I love all of the classical music in it!

I will admit that January is my least favorite month. Why? The nights are still long. My house isn’t lit up with my pretty Christmas trees. It is cold outside. But what I have been looking forward to for the past several Januaries is… Downton Abbey!!!

Unfortunately this is the last season for the show. No!!

Did you watch the season premiere this past Sunday??

If you haven’t had time to catch up, Go watch it now!

Let’s look at some of the pretty fashions from this season’s show…No spoilers (to my knowledge)

I’ll admit some of my favorite outfits from the show are of Lady Mary’s hunting outfits.

How chic does she look here?

I like lady Edith’s dress below…

Lady Rose always looks so nice in pink.

I could use this big hat for my trip to Hawaii…

I love this dress below!

Lady Mary looking like a fashionable flapper both above and below!

Do you watch Downton Abbey?

If you do, you might like some of my other Downton Abbey posts…

Happy New Year!!
I am back from a very busy holiday season!  We had a total of FIVE Christmases! While I LOVE Christmas, it was a LOT of Christmases to have!  We had two of them at our house.

For the first time EVER in my WHOLE LIFE I finally was able to celebrate Christmas at my own home on Christmas morning. That has NEVER happened ever. It really meant a lot to me.  We had a nice break-feast as my husband and I coined it… a feast of French toast and yummy breakfast potatoes with a homemade eggnog latte. It was the best. I hope this is a tradition we get to keep doing!!

Well, in prepping for posts for the next year, I thought I’d take a glance and see what my top posts of the past year were!

I wrote about my parents’ pretty bathroom remodel, you need to check it out.

You all loved this early Fall centerpiece… I did too with those sunflowers!

As you know, we went to France this past April and had a blast.  I had so much fun reviewing our trip and writing a gazillion posts about it. Here are your favorites…

What to pack to Paris…

Carry-on travel essentials for that long plane flight…

A day trip to Chateau de Fontainebleau

I had been dreaming of visiting the Laduree Tea Salon in Paris since I first heard about it… I blogged about my experience here.

Did you know buying a Louis Vuitton is cheaper in Paris? WHAT! Doesn’t mean it’s a steal, but I wrote about it in this post.

I wrote about my favorite places to shop in Paris.

I wrote about baking Orange Blossom macarons following Laduree’s recipe. These were my FAVORITE macarons to eat in Paris!

You all liked my Thanksgiving table. It was my #1 tablescape of the year! I loved it too!

I was a bit surprised how much you like my Fall 2015 outfit suggestions!

And now, *drum roll please*… The top post of 2015 was…. Taupe, Greige, and Grey Kitchen Trends!
