How to Dry Lavender and DIY Lavender Decorating Ideas

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

I have been busy drying lavender this past month!  Do you grow your own lavender? If you do, I highly recommend harvesting it and using it around the house!  It so beautiful both alive and dried.

Drying your own lavender is easy to do.  It is easier than drying other flowers!

Here are the simple steps:

1. Harvest your lavender just before it’s fully in bloom.  Cut the lavender flowers just above the leaves. If you get some of the leaves, just pick them off.  Don’t cut the woody part of the plant. I harvest at dusk after the bees have gone home for the night.

2. Gather the lavender into a hand-size bunch.  Tie the stems with string, rubber band, etc.

3. Hang the lavender bunch upside down.  I attached my bunches to a hanger.

4. Find a cool dark place to allow the lavender to dry.  I put mine in my closet – it made the closet smell nice and it was cool and dark in there!

5. Allow to completely dry. Drying times vary depending on how big you made your bunches, where you stored them, etc. I let these hang for 2-3 weeks.

Decorating with lavender is one of my favorite things!  I filled my dough bowl this year’s harvest of lavender, as you can see below.  (Sorry for the picture quality, it was very difficult to get a good picture because it is so sunny here!)

Or, you can just wrap them up in a bunch and lay them on a table, like below…

You can make your own lavender sachets, like below.  This sachet I happened to receive as a party favor from my relatives… they have their own lavender farm!  It is very easy to make…. just dry your lavender as above. Then, once dry, you just pick off the flowers.

DIY lavender sachet - perfect for wedding favor or party favor.

Here, I set up a French country lavender table using our home grown lavender.

Here is another pretty lavender sachet… Antique Style Blog used her antique hankies and turned them into these pretty sachets.  Check out how she did that here.

How to make a burlap wreath blog teaches us how to make a dried lavender wreath! I love it!

Below in my centerpiece, you can see a dried lavender wreath too. I did not make it! Bought it at my favorite store in Napa!

This past Winter I trimmed the lavender so far back into the woody part all you could see was the woody party! I was afraid it wouldn’t grow back! But it DID! Do you grow your own lavender?

Here is a French farmhouse lavender tablescape I did!

Fourth of July at Peonies & Orange Blossoms!

Hello and Happy Fourth of July! Yes, this party is a little bit early, but it is blog land where things tend to run early so we can look at everyone’s ideas!

I picked some flowers in red, white, and blue from the garden to create this centerpiece…

I love that I just could walk out to the garden and pick these flowers!

Our driveway was decorated with the patriotic bunting!

I created the red white and blue look with all flowers from the garden.

I made this easy patriotic fruit and pretzel flag.
It took only a few minutes to make and was a hit with the party guests!

4th of July fruit and pretzel flag

Here is another centerpiece I put together that was easy to make.
I picked some hydrangeas from the garden and put a flag in the center!

Our faithful dog is feeling patriotic…

One last look at my 4th of July centerpiece!
You can recreate the look similar on your own… just use three different vases on across your table!

Some great ideas you can do yourself for your own 4th of July party:

– Use flowers from your garden

-Create simple centerpieces using things that a red, white and blue

– Make a fruit flag – it is very easy! Just arrange your fruit in a flag! For the white I used pretzels!

-Buy some patriotic bunting and flags!

What to do about the TV and Fireplace Decorating Dilemma?

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

One of the things that I had struggled with was what to do about the tv and fireplace decorating dilemma.  Do you know what I’m talking about?

The tv is huge. The fireplace is huge.  TVs are only getting larger. While they are getting sleeker too, frankly, they are ugly.

If you put the tv above the fireplace, then you are looking up and you have to have your neck at an odd angle. I’m not really a huge fan of this look, but I do understand that it’s about the only place to put our monster big screen tvs so that’s where it ends up. So designers have become very clever in order to hide the tv… like below, hiding it behind art.

source

Or, as Stacy from South Shore Decorating Blog did, she painted a big black stripe to hide her tv. I can’t even see her tv below!

via South Shore Decorating Blog

The other common option is to put the tv next to the fireplace. But, if you put the tv next to the fireplace, then it makes this odd off balance look that I am less of a fan of.  Although, in the picture below, I think it actually looks pretty good!  At least this way the tv is at the right height for your eye!

source

Both cases are what most people have just because that is just how the layout is of the house they bought. There is no where to put the tv AND use the fireplace AND have a functional room in a house that is already built!

However… I’m designing a house. And I thought, wait a minute, I don’t need to worry about this dilemma… why don’t I just… Move the fireplace! So I did. Dilemma gone.

via Antique Style

I am moving the fireplace into the center of the room.  I got the idea from this house from the Portland Street of Dreams.  Antique Style Blog wrote about this house… I saw it several years ago and had it saved in my archives!  I didn’t realize back in 2013 that I would end up copying this idea! I have studied this house many times.

So, below is the fireplace from the living room…

via Antique Style

And here is the fireplace from the kitchen!  The kitchen is just to the right of the chairs.  You will also notice in the picture below the tv is on the other wall in the living room. You can enjoy the living room fireplace and tv!

via Antique Style

Ah ha~ This picture shows the layout the best. I am going to do a very similar layout.  Living room on one side, kitchen on the other. My little sitting area in front of the fireplace will be on the other side in the living room… so we can have coffee and watch tv.

So then a few years later in the Season 2 premiere of Fixer Upper they showed a remodeled house with a double sided fireplace! Ah ha! The second main inspiration for me!

While I know the double sided fireplace is nothing new, it doesn’t seem to be extremely common in living rooms but more in master bedroom/bathrooms! I loved the all brick fireplace from Fixer Upper! I believe the tv is facing the couch in the picture below. While the fireplace is old and appears to be nonfunctional, it is still really cool.

via Fixer Upper
via Fixer Upper

The next and final double sided fireplace inspiration comes from Patina Farm.  What I love about Patina Farm’s double sided fireplace are the two different mantels used.  I also like the sconces built in… something I will have to plan to wire for! I noticed in the first house there are also sconces built into the fireplace as well!

via Patina Farm

Like the Portland Street of Dreams house, there is a little sitting area in front of the fireplace at Patina Farm.

via Patina Farm

Here is a sketch from Patina Farm of her layout. In my house, pretend the dining room isn’t there. It will be… kitchen on the right, double sided fireplace divider, then living room on the left with the fireplace opposite the tv.

via Patina Farm

The Gianetti’s also take it one step further… and hide their tv too. It’s behind the beautiful silk wallpaper in the picture below!

via Patina Farm

So, here’s what I plan to do… We actually have two TVs. Yes, I let my husband put our two TVs together on the same tv console table in the picture below.. now he can watch twice the amount of sports. He’s so happy about it, and frankly I don’t watch tv hardly at all anymore so I don’t care. At first I put up a battle as it seemed like a ridiculous amount of TV space in the room, but now that it’s there, I don’t mind so much. It is ugly though, but oh well.  I don’t have a clever way of hiding that much tv so it is what it is.

Then we will have furniture in the living room, then the fireplace on the other end that is double sided.

Opposite the fireplace in the kitchen is the stove. And then we have two giant kitchen islands (we love to bake and cook). There will be a little sitting area to the left of the fireplace in the living room… enough to have a cup of coffee and watch tv.

So anyway, just sharing some of the double sided fireplaces I found while looking around the internet…

source

Another one separating the living room and dining room. Unfortunately I can’t tell if they moved the tv.

Like I said, it seems to be the most common to have a double sided fireplace in the master suite somewhere, like the picture below.

source

And one more… I don’t see the tv in sight but I suppose its one of the other walls.

pinterest (couldn’t find original!)

What I won’t be doing is having a double sided fireplace and then putting the tv above the fireplace like in the picture below!

So, I have moved the fireplace so I don’t have to have the TV above it or next to it… but we have two TVs so it’s still ugly. Le sigh.  At least one half of the room will look cute!

So, are you a fan of the TV above the fireplace?

Do you leave your TV in the open or do you try to hide it?

Raspberry Rose French Tart

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

I have made mini tarts before but I have never made a big tart before!  I received a 9″ tart pan with a removable bottom and it is fantastic!  This was actually a pretty easy recipe to make.  I combined a few recipes and came up with this creation!

Raspberry Rose French Tart Recipe

Rose Tarte aux Framboises

makes one 8-9″ tart

printable recipe is here

Tart dough (recipe from David Leibovitz, I recommend reading his recipe on his site – it’s funny)

90 g (3 ounces) unsalted butter, cut into pieces

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

3 tablespoons water

1 tablespoon sugar

1/8 teaspoon salt

150 g (5oz, or 1 slightly-rounded cup) flour

  1. Preheat the oven to 410º F
  2. In a medium-sized ovenproof bowl, combine the butter, oil, water, sugar, and salt.
  3. Place the bowl in the oven for 15 minutes, until the butter is bubbling and starts to brown just around the edges.
  4. When done, remove the bowl from oven (and be careful, since the bowl will be hot and the mixture might sputter a bit), dump in the flour and stir it in quickly, until it comes together and forms a ball which pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  5. Transfer the dough to a 9-inch (23 cm) tart mold with a removable bottom and spread it a bit with a spatula OR transfer the dough to your mini tart pans. It doesn’t matter the size of your tart pans. Save a raspberry size piece of dough and set it aside.
  6. Once the dough is cool enough to handle, pat it into the shell with the heel of your and, and use your fingers to press it up the sides of the tart mold.
  7. Prick the dough all over with the tines of a fork about ten times, then bake the tart shell in the oven at 410F for 15 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven and if there are any sizable cracks, use the bit of reserved dough to fill in and patch them.
  9. I find it best to pinch off a small amount of the reserved dough, roll it gently between your fingers to soften it, then wedge it into the cracks, smoothing it gently with your pinky.
  10. Let the shell cool before filling.  Next, make the rose cream.

Rose Tart aux Framboises

Rose crème pâtissière (modified from Teatime in Paris book by Jill Colonna)

500g whole milk

6 egg yolks

80g granulated sugar

40g cornstarch

1.5 tbsp rose water

  1. Pour the milk into a saucepan and gradually bring to a boil over medium-low heat.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk the yolk and the sugar until pale.  Then wshik in the cornstarch until pale, smooth and creamy. You can hand whisk or use a handheld mixer.
  3. As soon as th milk starts to boil, pour half the milk into the egg yolk mix and whisk until combined. Then pour back into the saucepan and hand whisk continuously over heat until thickened.  Take off the heat as soon as you have a few thick bubbles.
  4. Immediately place plastic wrap directly in contact with the hot pastry cream.  This helps to avoid a film forming on top, otherwise you will have a lumpy cream you will have to strain).
  5. Place in the fridge for an hour (or freezer for 10 minutes 0 until cool).
  6. Once cool, remove the film and whisk the cream again until its nice and smooth.  Add in the 1.5 tbsp rose water.

White chocolate layer (optional)

2 handfuls white chocolate chips

  1. Place the white chocolate chips in the microwave and heat in 30 second intervals at 50% microwave power. Stir in between each interval until melted.

Rose Tarte aux Framboises

Assembly

1 pound raspberries, washed and dried

  1. First, spread a fine layer of white chocolate on the bottom of your cooled tart shell.  This is an optional step.  This helps keep the tart dough from getting soggy.  If you are going to eat this right away, then I recommend skipping this step.  If you are going to serve your tart for later, I recommend doing this step.
  2. Next, Spread the pastry cream inside the tart until even.
  3. Arrange the raspberries in a circle, starting with the outside and working your way in
  4. Keep in the refrigerator until ready to serve. The tart keeps in the fridge for 2-3 days but is best served immediately!

After baking the tart and letting it cool, we took it outside and had a nice little French Country Evening!

Raspberry Rose French Tart Recipe

One last look of our evening and the pretty tart!

Raspberry Rose French Tart Recipe

Overall, I thought this tart was pretty easy to bake. Do you think you will give it a go?

For the centerpiece, I used these pretty pink peonies with a few scattered ranunculus.

I used the leaves from the peonies and scattered them on the table which brings in the green from the plates.

I also used paper lace doilies in the centerpiece as well.

The green plates are a pretty Spring green from Bordallo Pinheiro. The pink goblets are vintage French.

The napkins are antique and are monogrammed. Not with my name! I wish, but it’s hard to find antique ones with the exact same letters!

Well, I just love all of these rooms. I love French country but I also really love French formal. I would love to do something like this below in my office. But I know it all costs $$$.

I am hoping someone will write an article about the interior design of this renovation! Would love to know about all the fabrics and details, wouldn’t you?

A guide to how to create the best ice cream sundae at home! YES please!

Personal

I’ve been super busy this week! We drove down to Southern California for a graduation.  I went to my favorite pastry shop in LA – Bottega Louie. Then we toured expensive model homes in Newport Beach for fun. We ate at Red O, a Mexican restaurant by Top Chef Master Rick Bayless.  More shopping… then to the graduation! Busy busy!

The Kitten Tales

Remember I talked about the kittens last week? The Mama cat moved one kitten and left two.  Unfortunately I went to check on them today and one of them had died overnight! We had been helping feeding them but I suppose that one was sick or something. Now we only have one kitten left… as I don’t know where the mom put the other kitten.

Spotted

Well, I’ve been looking at these flats by Chloe for a long time and finally bought them! They cost a pretty penny but they are so comfortable! I had a hard time deciding on a color… ultimately I went with black! I just found some online in white for half off.  The leather on them is so soft; I can see myself owning several pairs in different colors.

I was actually thinking I was going to buy this flat below, the Varina by Salvatore Ferragamo… but I didn’t realize all their colors were patent leather.   I tried them on in the store. It was really stiff and actually uncomfortable. It was a real disappointment! They had some cute colors, but I’m not going to spend $$$ on an uncomfortable shoe!  Anyway, I highly recommend the ballet flat by Chloe!

A French Country Evening and a Secret to Living a Glamorous Life

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Hello! I’m here today sharing with you a little French country evening!  I have prepared a French raspberry tart for us to enjoy (some of us will enjoy it with our eyes, other with our mouths!)

I made the raspberry tart… the recipe will be coming soon.

Want to know a secret to living a glamorous life?

Make the ordinary… extraordinary!

What do I mean by that?  So, here for instance, we are having dessert. Yes, I know it is a raspberry tart, but really it could be any dessert!

I am using some sterling forks to eat.  Now, you say, that’s nice, but I can’t do that because of… money or *insert excuse* (too busy, it’s too fragile, that’s too fancy for me)…

Well, except you can!

You don’t have to have own whole sterling set of silverware. (Don’t tell the sterling dealer that).  Just… buy two forks. You can find them in a pattern you like for a decent price either on Ebay or an antique mall that won’t break the bank.  The forks don’t have to be a matching pattern either, honestly!

Pull out your nicer crystal… I know you have at least two nice cups from your wedding!

Dine on some antique plates that are hand painted and beautiful! I pulled these pretty pink and gold ones off of the wall! Just don’t put them in the dishwasher or use a knife on them (otherwise they will scratch or be ruined!).

You say, I don’t have antique plates… well I know for a FACT that you can pick up some pretty hand painted antique plates for a song.

Don’t keep your antiques stored on the wall or your cupboard… use them! We have some friends that are antique dealers that always dine on antique fine china… Why? Because they can, that’s why!

I also picked some roses from the garden. They smelled delightful.   You don’t have to have flowers from the store. Just pick some from your garden!

You see… you don’t have to go out and dine to have a glamorous life… just stay at home!

But pulling out and using some of your nicer things “just cause” can make an ordinary day extraordinary and make you feel special.

You will feel like the Queen of your castle… because you are!

So that’s how I spent my French country evening.  Enjoying a tart, sipping on some sparkling lemonade, and watching the stars appear over the countryside.

French Windows

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

When building a French house, I think one of the most important elements is choosing the correct window!  Then, of course, there are the shutters. But that’s for another day.

Before we get started on window talk, let’s get our window terms down.  Inswing casement windows swing into the building.  Outswing casement windows swing out of the building.

In swing vs outswing windows!

From my study of French houses, it seems the only window they use is the inswing casement window!

I have seen the outswing casement window in other places in Europe – in fact, the house I lived in in Germany had outswing casement windows.

I believe they only use the inswing casement window because they almost always have shutters and how can you close a shutter when the window swings out? You can’t! (Unless you have a little pulley system, which is actually what the house in Germany that I lived in had, but that’s a bit different because it was the ugly metal shutter than the cute wood one).

These are all inswing casement windows. You cannot have the swing outwards with a metal bar in the way!

Recognize this place? Yes, it’s Chateau de Versailles. I spy… inswing casement windows!

A study below… inswing French windows up top, the smaller windows I think are inswing too. The bottom level has French doors.

Inswing inswing inswing!  In America, we would totally make these dormer windows double hung.

Inswing windows have different shapes… some eyebrow shaped, some square, some rectangular.

They are small, they are big. I feel like I’m writing for Dr. Seuss.

Below, an apartment in Paris.  This is how I envision my second story windows (there are only a few!)… an inswing window with a flower box on the second story. Oooh la la.

Well, here’s the deal with inswing French casement windows… they are not cheap!

There are only several national makers of them: Marvin Windows, Kolbe Windows, and Pella.  We are not going with Pella because they were terrible for our previous house.  TERRIBLE. Don’t buy them.

To save some cash, we are going to actually do a mixture: Inswing casement windows in a few key locations, outswing casement windows on others, and double hung on the rest.  Inswing is most expensive, followed by outswing, then double hung.  You can get the look of inswing casement with the outswing casement and even double hung… if you get the right style.

As for the window color, we are going with white windows. It seems a majority of windows in France are white and then the pop of color comes from the shutters.  I’ll be doing another post on shutters alone in the future.

What do you all think of all of these windows?
