Le Fraisier – a French Strawberry Cake

My absolute *favorite* French dessert is Le Fraisier.  You might have all thought it would be macarons by the way I talk about them, but it is actually Le Fraisier.  You just haven’t heard about it because it’s very difficult to bake yourself!

Since I’m not headed to Paris anytime soon, I figured I might as well start learning how to make my own.

This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase something using the link I may make a small commission but your price is unaffected.

And here is the result:

Le Fraisier - a French Strawberry Cake with recipe!

This recipe was  challenging such that there were so many different things to make: the cake, the pastry cream, the kirsch syrup, the marzipan.  Then there’s the assembly.

Le Fraisier - a French Strawberry Cake with recipe!

This recipe took about five hours. Everywhere I read says “only two hours” but there’s resting time.  It was not easy to bake and is not for a beginner baker! Next time I will be preparing things in steps.

Oh, it occurred to me that you may not know how to say “Fraisier”.  It’s “Freh-zee-YAY”, or, here’s the link to google and just hit the microphone button.

Le Fraisier - a French Strawberry Cake with recipe!

When we were in Paris last year, the Fraisiers just started arriving in the patisseries.  Everyone was so excited about them as they are a seasonal offering – and now I appreciate them even more since making my own.

Le Fraisier - a French Strawberry Cake with recipe!

On to the recipe – adapted from Laduree and Cakelets and Doilies.

This recipes makes either one 9″ cake or eight 3″ cakes.  This recipe has to chill overnight so you need to make it ahead of time.

Almond Génoise Cake

50 g (3 1/2 tbsp) butter , unsalted

200g (1 2/3 cup) cake flour

  6 eggs

200g (1 cup) granulated sugar

50g (1/2 cup) ground almonds or almond flour

1 1/2 tbsp butter

Making the Génoise cake

  1. Melt the 1 1/2 tbsp butter and using a pastry brush, butter your cake pan.   Place the cake pan in the fridge to allow the butter to harden.(notes – if you are making mini cakes, you will want to bake your cake in a 12×8 rectangular cake pan)
  2. In a small saucepan, melt the 50g of butter over low heat.
  3. In a large heatproof mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and the sugar.
  4. Preheat oven to 340F.  Place your heatproof mixing bowl over a pan of gently simmering water and whisk until the mixture is warm, thick and pale, and the mixture has tripled in volume (approximately 122F).  Then remove from the heat and keep mixing until the mixture is cool (notes – I could not get this thing to triple over the simmering water. So I just heated it, while stirring constantly, until it was 122F and then attached it to my kitchenaid mixer and let it whisk until it tripled in volume and the mixture was  completely cool).
  5. Once completely cooled down, fold in the sifted flour into the mixture.  Then fold in the ground almonds.  And then the melted butter.
  6. Lightly flour your cake pan and tap out an excess. Then immediately fill with batter and place in the oven. Bake for approximately 30 minutes.

Kirsch Syrup

100mL (1/2 cup – 1tbsp) water

100g (1/2 cup) granulated sugar

40mL (2 1/2 tbsp) kirsch liqueur (see notes below about kirsch)

Making the syrup

Combine the sugar and water into a small saucepan over medium heat.  Stir until the sugar dissolves. Allow to boil for just 5 seconds. Remove from the heat, let it cool, then stir in the kirsch liqueur.

Crème Mousseline

350g whole milk

100g granulated sugar

1/2 a vanilla bean, split lengthwise and scraped for inside beans/seeds

4 egg yolks

35g plain flour

200g unsalted butter, softened

1tbsp cherry liqueur (optional)

Making the creme

  1. Place milk, vanilla bean and scraped seeds into a saucepan and bring to a boil.  Then remove from heat and set aside.
  2. In another bowl, whisk egg yolks and sugar until mixture is pale yellow.  Mix int the flour until well combined.
  3. Remove vanilla bean pod from milk mixture.  Then pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, constantly whisking to combine.
  4. Then pour the whole mixture back into the saucepan and place over high heat.  Whisk constantly until it is thickened, smooth, and glossy.  Then remove from heat and transfer pastry cream to a plate. Immediately cover with plastic cling wrap and place into the freezer to cool but only for 10 minutes.  Do not allow it to freeze (If you don’t put the cling wrap on immediately, the pastry cream will get a film on it that’s lumpy and gross and you will have to strain it out later, so don’t miss this step)
  5. While the cream is in the freezer, beat your butter until creamy.  Then when the pastry cream is about room temperature, add the cream to the butter and mix until while combined.   Add the liqueur.
  6. Spoon the mousseline into a piping bag with 1cm piping tip.

Marzipan Top

store-made marzipan

food coloring (either pink or light green, and don’t use the cheap store bought ones, you need a higher grade version)

Making the marzipan

Working the marzipan with your fingers to warm it up.  Using a rolling pin, spread the marzipan into a thin layer.  Then either place it on top of the 9″ cake pan and take off the sides or you can use an extra cake mold and cut it out. (You may use cornflour on the kitchen worktop to keep it from sticking.  I also recommend wearing some gloves as the food coloring will get all over you)

Assembly

1 pound of strawberries, cut in half and with the green tops removed.  (Save your cutest strawberries for the top and set them aside.  Also, smaller strawberries look cuter in the cake and are more sweet.  When you cut the berries, you want them to all be the same height).

Cake mold(s)

Assembling the cakes

Cut out the sponge cake with your cake rings.  Then, inside the cake ring, place a circle of plastic cake wrap.  Then put the sponge cake.  Brush the cake with the kirsch syrup.  Arrange the strawberries around the edge of the cake ring with the flat edge facing the outside.  Pipe or spread the creme mousseline over the strawberries.  Then place another layer of sponge cake on top.  Put the marzipan on top.  Place in the fridge overnight. The following day, dip a strawberry into the kirsch syrup and put on top just before serving.

Materials I used to bake Le Fraisier (affiliate links)

Stand Mixer

Hand Mixer (I did not use it this time, but I will next time!)

Plastic cake wrap

Scale

Food coloring

Cake Sheet pan

3″x3″ Cake molds

9″ cake mold

Now, making the kirsch syrup was kind of funny. It calls for cherry liqueur.  As I don’t drink, a stroll into the alcohol beverage store was quite the adventure.  After wandering around for quite some time and googling on my phone, I learned this: cherry schnapps is *not* the same thing.  You need to use cherry liqueur and the brand that apparently all the French chefs use is Heering Cherry Liqueur. You’re welcome. I just saved you an hour on the internet and wandering around the market.

As you can see, they are highly photogenic.  I had fun photographing them as well as eating them.

Le Fraisier - a French Strawberry Cake with recipe!

This chef also has a nice picture tutorial with each step.  The recipe is a little different and he uses a rectangular large cake pan, but the idea is the same.

What do you all think? Do you think you’re going to be brave and make the recipe or stick to just eating them??!

On the Blog

This week on the blog I have totally redesigned the website and I have updated my logos to better reflect about how I am feeling about Peonies and Orange Blossoms.  I wanted it to be more whimsical.  Now my love for 18th century French things is better displayed!

Personal
I’ve bought a new indoor spin bicycle and I am so excited because it is arriving today!!! I used to live right next to a gym and I would go to spin class 3-4 times a week and I loved it. Then I fell off the bandwagon for several years but NOW I’m reading to hop back on the bike! This time I bought some real cycling shoes (I bought these ones) and I’m so excited to use them! I can’t wait for my bike to arrive!!! Are you into spinning? Let me know, fellow spinners.

Beauty Talk
Last year I wrote about my Top 10 favorite beauty products.  I realized I skipped a few things. So let’s have beauty chat, okay?

Favorites I use *every day*
1. Aveda “Shampure” Shampoo and Conditioner- I *LOVE* this stuff.  I have really fine hair and often times shampoos and conditioners leave my hair feeling like there’s still soap inside.  This stuff is wonderful and it smells fantastic.  I alternate between Shampure and their Rosemary & Mint Shampoo and Conditioner!  The rosemary mint shampoo and conditioner make me feel like I’m at a relaxing spa, but it gives my fine hair a little bit of body!

2. L’occitane almond oil body wash – I have eczema and a lot of soaps leave my skin super dry. This almond oil body wash leaves my skin moisturized.

3. Aquaphor– As I said above, I have eczema.  There are tons of expensive lotions and creams out there for this, but Aquaphor works the best, is doctor recommended, and it is very cheap!  A little goes a long way.

4. Essie Gel Setter Top Coat – Gel nails are expensive.  This top coat gives you the look of gel nails but for at home. top coat is regular nail polish but it makes my manis and pedis last a lot longer.  This is the best top coat of nail polish I have ever purchased and I will 100% buy it again!

Beauty Wishes
1. Nars Illuminator Liquid – I’ve been thinking about this for a while as I *love* their blush.  Does anyone else use this? If so, leave a comment!

2. Oribe Texturizing Spray – I have literally read hundreds of reviews about this product, but it’s expensive so I haven’t bit the bullet yet on this.  It’s supposed to make your hair amazing, give the perfect amount of texture and volume without feeling like you have product left in!

3.  Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow – Obviously these are hugely popular as they have 3 total color palettes now.  I’ve looked at them for a long time but my eyeshadow seems to be lasting *forever* and I can’t justify buying new eyeshadows until at least *one* of my palettes is out!

Do you have a favorite beauty product not mentioned? Leave me a comment!

On the Web

Chanel showed their Resort 2017 collection this past week.  I love looking at pictures of fashion shows.  I always pretend like I have an unlimited budget and pretend like I’m shopping.  Do you do that?

Anyway, for this collection, I’m not quite so obsessed with the clothes as I am the shoes.  I would like a pair of all of the shoes (except the sandals).  Look at the shoes below!

Look at these shoes! J’adore!!

If I had an unlimited clothing budget, I would wear this whole outfit…

I thought this dress seemed both formal but lightweight, perfect for a Summer gala!

This gal looks like she’s going on vacation.  I like how a deep cut v-neck dress is worn with a blouse – makes it more modest and wearable for the rest of us non-models!

If you wish to see the entire collection, visit Vogue (click here).  The pictures are all from Vogue.

French Style Houses… Part 1

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

I had a hard time trying to put into words what it is that I want.  I always knew that I wanted “FRENCH”, but really though, there are many different styles of French architecture.  I knew I didn’t want the super formal French provincial style for my house, but don’t get me wrong, I totally *love* that style, and if I were building a two story house that is what I would do.

But we are building a one story house, which I didn’t think was French at all (until I started studying).  I don’t ever intend to sell this house and plan to live in it until I’m in my eighties, which may be wishful thinking, but a girl can dream.

The first exterior plans our architect sent us was a modernized version of Mediterranean architecture. Steel roof with a mix of tile roof and steel windows. He added working shutters at my request. But I’ve been thinking long and hard about it, and I don’t want a steel roof. I think it will look too “2010s”. Also, I don’t see a lot of metal roofing material when I study French architecture.  So, back to the drawing board.   I want a “French Country House”.  I thought, what exactly is “French Country”?? So my study of French architecture started.

This post ended up being super long, so I broke it down into part 1 and part 2.  Part 1 looks at actual architecture in France. Part 2 looks at Americanized French architecture.

As it turns out, there are TONS of different types of French houses.  Every region in France has a slightly different version!

Périgourdine

This type of house had a steeply pitched roof, making it look like straight out of a fairy tale.  The height from the top to the bottom of the roof is usually at least as tall as the walls below.  If there is an upper story house it has dormer windows.

Château

This is also a vague term, and usually just means very large manor house.  A Manoir and Chateau are essentially the same thing, but the chateau has to be on the heritage register.  They are usually formal and stately.  Below, is a stunning example of a Baroque Chateau, the Chateau Vaux Le Vicomte.

pics – source Wikipedia

Maison de Maitre

It is a free standing rectangular house that is usually two stories tall with an attic.  It usually has a symmetrical façade.  It usually has three windows across the first floor, but also may have five.  The Maison de Maitre usually has a slightly imposing appearance!

The Domaine

In wine growing areas, the term chateau is actually used for the vineyard.  A “chateau” with a vineyard is known as a Domaine.

source Maxwell Storrie Baynes

Longère

A long, single story dwelling that is one room deep.

Chartreuse

It is a one story country house that was built from 1650-1850.  The property was designed for easy living, with all living quarters on the ground floor.  The houses were mostly 1 room deep, but could be more.  The rooms had windows or French doors on both sides to get an indoor-outdoor feel.  The gardens often had a formal French style herb/kitchen garden as well.  Historically, the chartreuse was built as French country homes for the bourgeoisie.  In the 18th century, the style changed a little.  They often had carved stone cornices, stone moldings around doors and windows, stone sinks, small stone oval shaped windows (oeil de bouef) and often had an interior courtyard.  If there is an upper floor, it would be a mansard roof with towers at either end.

source Maxwell Storrie Baynes

The Villa

A more modern type of property, now typical in Provence and the South of France.  There are clean lines, lots of land and space.  They have the modern conveniences built in.

source

The Mas

A stone house usually in Provence as a rural property.  They vary in size and are less structured and less symmetrical than a bastide.  Originally all of the mas were south-facing due to the winds.

source – la porte property

Below is an example of a modern day Mas.

source – architect in Provence

source

The Bastide

It is the equivalent in Provence to the Maison de maitre.  The bastide is a symmetrical stone building at least two stories tall with big windows.  They are usually part of a larger property with out buildings.  It may be rectangular or square shape and is larger and more elegant than a Mas.  It has a tiled roof that is flatter than other parts of the region and stone walls that may be whitewashed.

The one below is a bastide but it is also kind of in a chartreuse style given how long it is.Girondine Style

A type of Bastide that may be L shaped.source

Colombage House

A half-timbered house, usually in the Normandy area. It looks like English houses because the area was right next to England and had the same influences.

Now, I know there are many more types of French houses, but these are the main ones.  Every region in France has different architecture.   What I did learn though, is that none of them have French provincial? Why? Because it’s American!

I have another table setting for you of with different shades of purple, black and white.  The star of the show is my tulipiere, which I love and have never seen any other vase like it except in museums.

Spring Table with Juliska Tulipiere, purple carnations and ranunculus and an antique lace tablecloth

I went crazy shooting pictures of the flowers, I shot tons of pictures.  Then when I was all done I realized I didn’t have a close up of the table setting itself.  Oh well, the table cloth is wrinkled anyway, so… look at the flowers!!

The table cloth is antique and was used at my wedding.  I like the plum goblets with the purple flowers.

Spring Table with Juliska Tulipiere, purple carnations and ranunculus and an antique lace tablecloth

It takes approximately 3 dozen flowers to fill up this vase. My husband said he was tricked – instead of buying me one bouquet to fill up a vase he has to buy three! Here I filled it with purple carnations and purple/green ranunculus!

Spring Table with Juliska Tulipiere, purple carnations and ranunculus and an antique lace tablecloth

I didn’t realize how wrinkled this tablecloth was until post-editing the pictures. Oh well, the table cloth is still really pretty!

On the Web

This week was the Met Gala.  Here are my favorite looks, but you can see a lot more here!

Spotted

This past weekend I bought… a new lunch box! Hooray!  I purchased this lunch box (below).  If you click on the link there are *tons* of different color patterns!

I actually purchased it in the blue and white color pattern below.   My husband actually has this lunchbox below and loves it.  (He has it in a different color).  If you click on the link there are also *tons* of color patterns!

I like my new lunch box because it’s a little bigger than my old one and it can carry comfortably a yogurt, a diet coke, and my bento box.  I LOVE the bento box, it is wonderful.  I usually put salad on the one side and the salad toppings in a little compartment, see below.  I use these little dippers to hold extra toppings, and then these mini salad dressing cups for the salad dressing.  I then make a bunch of salads at once – healthy lunch for the week!

Personal

So I’m really excited because I have new FACEBOOK PAGE for the blog!!!  You guys asked for it so I came up with one!  I do hope you’ll “Like” my page! I am a little bit upset with Instagram’s new feed as I used to have a lot of engagement and now I see a big drop… so hope this will make up for it!

From the Blog

Yes, I know Cinco de Mayo was yesterday, but a know a lot of people celebrate it during the weekend. Here are my favorite Cinco de Mayo Recipes straight from the blog!

My favorite dish here is this Mexican Street Corn. It’s really easy to make!

These Black Bean Sweet Potato bites  are very tasty and a healthier alternative to tortilla chips..

You could make these Black Bean, Potato, and Cheese Pupusas for a main course or appetizers

This Mexican corn with serrano crema is delicious! Recipe: Mexican Style Corn with Serrano Crema

Favorite Instagram

The IGer of the week is Avenue des Reveries.  She is a fashion student in Paris and takes the prettiest photos.  I especially love the one from May Day… with the Lily of the Valley and the macarons.  Did you know that Laduree makes a lily of the valley macaron? Well, they do. And… it’s good!  If you’re wondering what app reader I’m using, it’s called Retro for Instagram and its for the iPad. The IG app itself is not very good for the iPad so I just switched to this new reader this week. I really like it! (I was not paid to say that!)

Based on my reader survey, a lot of you wanted some more decor and room boards.  So, here ya go! Also, a lot of you wanted a Facebook page for my blog, so I made one!  You can follow my *new* FACEBOOK page here!   See readers? You ask, I deliver! I also sent out a monthly newsletter like many said they wanted as well, hope you enjoyed it!

I saw this French bistro outdoor dining set and loved it!  I am on the look out for French outdoor tables and chairs since we are building a French Farmhouse.  For my outdoor furniture, I was debating between French farm table vs French bistro table.   As I have the French farmhouse table as my main dining table already, I was leaning towards the French bistro look outside.

French Bistro Outdoor Style

Ok, so anyway, back to the picture. I saw this picture in Williams-Sonoma Home magazine and fell in love!  I really like the all black bistro chairs.  But then I started adding up the individual elements and wow!! I thought, with a little searching I bet I could find the same look for less! Let’s see…

WS Home Look:
WS Parisian Dining table $3495
Williams Sonoma chair $350
WS Greek Key Pillow  $79
WS Outdoor rug 6×9 $395
WS hurricane vase, $69
Outdoor 10′ umbrella, $495
Total (with four chairs): $9033!!

Parisian Bistro Style Look:
Parisian Table, Deal $1395
Mini bistro table, Steal perfect for small yards! $129
French Bistro black and white $159 // chair number two $209 // all black wooden French bistro chair set of two $260
Steal Greek Key Pillow $34
Outdoor rug with pattern , 6×9 $133
Hurricane Vase, $29
Outdoor 9′ umbrella, $110
Outdoor 7′ umbrella ($79) for smaller yards
Total (with 4 of these chairs as I like them the best): $2306!

Parisian Bistro Outdoor Style for Less

The Look for Less is $6727 cheaper! WOW! I had no idea when I was making this that it was going to be that big of a difference!

For small yards, the mini bistro table, two chairs, and smaller umbrella the total cost is = $722, so the price difference from the magazine look is… $8311 cheaper.

Well, I had fun putting together this post! It goes to show that you can start with an inspiration photo and end with the look for a lot less!  I style like the all black chairs better though – nothing a little paint can’t fix!

Just within the past few weeks, we got a first peek into Prince William and Kate’s Kensington Palace apartment 1A!!   The reason we were able to sneak a peek into the apartment was because they were hosting the POTUS.  But, let’s not focus on the faces in these pictures.  Let’s look at the furniture and decor!

At immediate glance in the room, I’m noticing a muted color palette of pinks, blues, and creams.  I totally love this.  The oil paintings in the back of the room are marvelous, although, don’t you think the one on the left is hanging up a bit too high?  The antique oils are from the Royal Collection.

Let’s see, the palace must be very dark, as there are lots of a table lamps.  I spy a French bergere chair by the fireplace with a bombay chest to the right of the bergere. The octagonal ottoman in the center of the couches is interesting with a stuffed animal Bo on top brought out for the occasion. I like the fabric on the ottoman! A round single pedestal table in the back serves as the bar – no bar carts here! I see behind that what appears to be a pink silk chair… and a hidden door.

On the left in the picture below, a Chinese garden stool in blue and white sits next to the couch next to Kate.  I can’t see the table, it looks like maybe a bamboo gold table behind the stool?  The pillow appears to be silk with a botanical print on the front and pink on the back.  I see a candle burning on modern lucite table… it reminds me of what I read about William and Kate’s wedding: they filled Westminster Abbey with Jo Malone Orange Blossom candles… wonder if that’s what is burning here!

The table next to Prince William does appear to be lucite, don’t you think? It is one way to make a palace for a future King more modern – add some plastic. No worries, an antique gold table sits behind with family pictures.  Behind Obama I spy a grand piano and an antique vase.  Do you notice the window seats to look over the fabulous gardens of the palace?

Also, the couch is interesting with its bullion fringe – something that does not seem to be very popular right now.  I like the blue and white colors against the cream!  I also like the rug.  I also spy what appears to be a pair of gilt console tables in the back with family pictures.

Spring branches are displayed on the grand piano.  I see a pretty oil of a landscape behind it. And another chintz pillow in red this time. And more books and family pictures.

Here you can see a closer look of the blue and white fabric on the chair Prince William is sitting on.  It appears he has the same problem that my Dad always complains about with little antique chairs – he’s too big for the chair!

Alright, what can we see behind the ladies?  I like the marble urn table lamps with striped yellow and white lamp shades.  And yes, that is a pink silk damask chair behind Michelle.  It seems the couches are the same that sit across from each other with the bullion fringe.  They are quite deep, as everyone is having to lean on pillows to sit up! It seems Kate is leaning against a chenille pillow, or maybe it is velvet? I like the botanical print pillow on the left – seems English cottage to me!  I also spy some Chinoiserie vases in the back.  And of course, fresh flowers!

Oh, forgot to mention earlier, I LOVE the length of the drapes.  They are perfect! The perfect puddle of fabric.  They love to decorate with family pictures, don’t they? I see them scattered across all of the tables! I like the chest used as an end table… I use one as a coffee table currently!

Remember the pair of gilt tables between the windows, like the one you see above? It seems they were in Charles and Diana’s apartment!  You can see one of them in the picture below!

Prince George stayed up past his bedtime to meet the POTUS.  Isn’t he cute with his little matching sleepwear and robe?  Ok, behind him what appears to be green lamps (maybe they are Jade? Opaline? Malachite? Or just painted green…).  A potted fern sits in a contemporary vase on a modern looking bookcase.  Lots of books and photo albums on the bookcase!  If you like Prince George’s outfit, you can find out more information on where to get it from What Kate’s Kids’ Wore.

Prince George playing on his rocking horse, a gift from the Obamas.  Isn’t he so cute? Pro-hosting tip: pull out the toys your guests gave your kids when they arrive.

I wish I could see the fabric on the curtains better!   The fabric on the chair below is interesting – appears to be blue and white.  The pillow looks like chenille, or velvet, or animal fur?? I also like they inlay table to the left of Kate.  I can’t tell what type of carpet they have, it appears to be a wool carpet in beige.

One last look at the apartment as it is today.   Want to see what it looked like before??

They kept the same doors and the same ceiling trim. Everything else – out!

Oh, it appears the window seats actually cover the radiators! How clever!

Previously, the *only* glimpse we had inside their apartment was this chair that Princess Charlotte was sitting on – which appears to be covered in a Chelsea Editions check.

The remodel reportedly cost $5 million and they renovated 20 rooms in the palace.  They apparently have 3 reception rooms, two master bedrooms, and a guest suite.  The nanny has a room by the children’s bedrooms.  They have two kitchens, one for family and one for staff.  They have staff bedrooms in the upstairs, a laundry room, staff break room, and luggage room.  The remodel also had wifi, TV projector, and a panic room.  Here’s a look at the palace…

I quite like their remodel.  Often when I see pictures of the interiors of the private apartments, I think they all look very dated and sometimes quite ugly.  I know it’s hard not to say – well of course it’s dated, that painting is from the 16th century! But, you can decorate with antiques and still keep the look very in the now.

Let’s see what I mean… A look back at one of the old rooms that got remodeled… wonder where the tapestry went???  Parts of the room are dated.  You could totally keep the bright yellow walls and tapestry, but change out the curtains and the fabrics on the chairs, don’t you think?

Another look at different room in the Kensington Apartment the way it was… very blue! Really, the most dating thing is the blue sofa and green chair.  The curtains are more fufu too.

Yes, you may say, but those pictures are OLD. *OF COURSE* the rooms look dated!  Ok, fine. Here’s a picture of the Queen with the Obamas from the same visit.   I spy a Sevres vase in the back, beautiful silk and silver needlepoint fire screen, a (wrinkled) Persian rug… AND an ugly tv stand from the 1990s with a tv, a dated grey chair that’s worn on the right, and then a toile print sofa on the left.  Seriously, what’s with that ugly tv stand??

Anyway, I like the muted color palette of Kate and William’s apartment and think it is interesting how a modern day Prince decorates.  What I love about it is that it is beautiful and rich but does not look stuffy!

UPDATE – Sunday May 1 in the afternoon

Since I posted this earlier in the morning, I read the news and HRH released some new pictures of Princess Charlotte in honor of her first birthday.  Isn’t she a cutie? Anyway, these photos were taken at their other residence, Amner Hall in Norfolk.

What I notice is that the color palette seems to be the same. If I squint my eyes really hard I can pretend like I make out at a pattern of curtains in the back.

Here she sits in a wicker chair. There is a beige and cream striped couch with bolder pillows on it.  The rug seems to be a wool rug of soft colors, beige, pink and green.  And, back to the star of the picture, aren’t her little outfits just darling??

What do you all think about the palace renovations??

If you follow along on the blog, you’ll know that we just got back from Hawaii!!  We spent the week there.  My favorite part of the trip, besides Spa day, was going kayaking in the ocean then snorkeling! We kayaked to a spot where turtles are known to hang… and sure enough! There they were!!  We also saw tons of schools of fish.

Below, the beach. That day a shark was spotted so no one was in the water!

Snorkel time! Below, a Moorish Idol (like Gill in Finding Nemo!)

School of fish!

Pretty clear day to Kayak!

Designing a Pool House

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Today I’m back with another post regarding our French Farmhouse build!!  Today’s post is all about pool houses.

But first, I realized I never went over the exterior look of the house… guess that will be for another post.  Think Provence.  Like the picture below. Except, stone will be used less sparingly with a bit more stucco to save some cash.  Okay, with that in mind…
This post may contain affiliate links.

…Trying to design the layout for the pool house has been a bit difficult for me!  Initially we had the entertainment room (aka the theater room) in the pool house, but then we decided to maybe put that over the garage instead.  So, back to the drawing board for the pool house then.

Let’s go over our requirements for the pool house:
1. Must have a gym/exercise room
2. Must have a bathroom (no tub needed)
3. Must have storage for pool equipment
4. Must look super cute as the master suite looks out on this

Here is an excellent drawing by yours truly showing a general lay out. As you can see, the master suite looks out across the pool to the pool house!

Things I am thinking about for the pool house:
-Having just a covered area for seating versus having an enclosed area with a sliding door or French door
– Having a covered area over the outdoor grill/kitchen

Exercise room would look like the picture below – would like big nano doors to open, but big sliders would work as well.  Room will need to be big enough for 1 elliptical, two spin bikes, and two yoga mats. Oh and a TV so I can do exercise videos!

Do we make the pool house big enough to put say a day bed in so it could be used as a back-up guest bedroom?? Don’t know.

Something like this below could work, exercise room on the left with a covered seating area on the right.  I don’t think it would be as massive as this, but you get the idea!

I did like this pool house, although our pool would be a bit further from the building.  It isn’t quite Provincial enough for me, more Spanish, but the arches are nice.

Or, the outside of the pool house could look like a little storybook cottage? Hard to have big exercise windows then!!

I notice during my searches that I’m drawn to the symmetry. Wouldn’t it be pretty to look out of the master and have the fireplace lined up?? Exercise room on the right, um, something else on the left??

We’ve also seen this pool house a bazillion times. What’s not to like? No room for the exercise area, would have to put windows and wall some of it off.

I LOVE this Tuscan pool house below.  You could put the exercise room in the center, bathroom on the right, and maybe instead of a walled off area you could just do a covered loggia for the outdoor kitchen?

Well, I like this but I know in my heart it won’t work. Don’t you love the little oval (round?) windows!

Ok, this below is actually pretty similar to the layout of our house.  Master suite on the left and pool house on the right.  If you look, you can see some open doors on the right. We could put the exercise room where the open doors are, and then the outdoor seating area and maybe outdoor kitchen just in front?

I really like the fireplace in the center of these pool houses!

The one below is actually in Provence.

This pool house below is to die for.  Yes, please!

I liked the covered patio on this one below.

What I liked about the house below was how the main sliding doors are closer to us, then there’s a room that further away on the right.

What I like about the pic below is that there’s symmetry but one has doors and was does not.  Maybe the outdoor kitchen could be straight across? Or put the outdoor kitchen on the left and the seating in the middle? I know there’s dining in the middle currently, but our dining table is going else where.

I like the loggia of the house below.

Oh goodness, isn’t the interior of this loggia BEAUTIFUL! A bit fancier than I had dreamt, but now that I see it.. wow!!

Symmetry. It is so pleasing to the eye.

Alright, let’s look at some house plans.  The one below, where it says garage, pretend there is an exercise room instead.  And obviously no stairs.

For the one below, the kitchen could be open.  We could put an exercise room where the bathroom is and move the bathroom behind it?

Where it says office, put exercise room instead!

This one is the most simple.  I would flip it around and put the room on the right and the bath on the left.

Ok, back to more pool house pictures.  The one below is cute.

What I’m interested in for the picture below is that the arched area over the kitchen is stone.  Then the living area is stucco.

I also like the on below as well.  The seating and kitchen are covered by a pergola. But that also makes me think.. the birds will sit there and poop on the grill! Gah. Practical things to think about, eh?

ALRIGHT. That does it for the day.  What do you all think? Any pool house layout suggestions?? I know, one could go crazy looking at pictures of pool houses and pinning away. But decisions must be made!

Dining like a French Royal – Royal Dinner Services of France

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Today’s post all started when I was dreaming about pretty plates that I could display my macarons on and take pretty pictures of them.  One thing led to another, and the next thing I know I’m reading about the history of the Sevres porcelain factory (originally called Manufacture de Vincennes) and royal dinner services.
This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

source

These dinner services were so pretty I decided to share them with you.  While these items are fit for a King and Queen, what I thought was refreshing about these patterns were the soft colors in the patterns (and then of course the bright bleu celeste in others).

It’s a nice change from the boring china that is made today, maybe our current makers of china can borrow some of these patterns (minus the gold and hand painting, to bring down the price for us.) Alright, let’s get started. Grab a cup of tea and let’s go!

The plate below was manufactured in 1756-1757 for Madame de Pompadour.  Don’t you like the flowers with the green ribbon and the floral garland? I believe it is called Green Ribbon Service.

source

The service below was called “attributes and gooseberries“. It was a dessert service made for Louis XV for the Petit Trianon in 1763, then enriched by Louis XVI in 1790.

source

The plate below is part of the service called “à fond lapis cailloute d’or”, made for Louis XV in 1762.

source

This is a service for Madame du Barry, made in 1770 by Sevres! I love the pattern! The pattern is “sky blue ribbons service” of Madame du Barry.

source

This pretty pink service was made for Louis XV at Chateau de Fontainebleau in 1770.  The pink color was really rare for the time.

source

Now, the pattern below is not from the French court but I thought I’d share it anyway.  It was made by Sevres for the Earl of Essex in the 1780s.  The pretty blue that draws your eye is the bleu celeste color – a color unique to Sevres porcelain.

source

The service below, Service Mythologique, was commissioned by Louis XVI in 1783 and was scheduled to take 23 years to complete the entire service.  The company had only finished half the service by the time of his execution.  The plates are heavenly – made with beau bleu border, gilt scroll, florals wreaths, and scenes from classical Roman and Greek history.  Each plate would take a year to finish! It is the most expensive service in France.

source

This service was bought by King George in England and is now in the collection of HM.

source

The service below was made in 1774 for Louis XVI in the Chinoiserie style – it was a Chinese ornaments tea service called “ribbon“. Louis XVI then gave this sit to his aunts Madame Adelaide and Madame Victoire.

source

This pretty plate below was made for the sister of Marie-Antoinette (Charlotte-Louise, was she was known in France). It was once again made by Sevres.  Isn’t is super pretty??

source

The service below Marie Antoinette commission by Sevres in 1781 for Princess de Lamballe as a gift.  The service pattern is called “à double filet bleu, roses et barbeaux”.

source

The blue and green plate below was part of an entire service made for Marie Antoinette in 1781 by Sevres.  This service was called “À Perles et Barbeaux” (Pearl and Cornflower in English, Cornflowers were one of Marie Antoinette’s favorite flowers).

source

Below is yet another service made by Sevres by Marie Antoinette in 1781 called “cartels en perles, panneaux en roses et bar beaux“.  I have several pictures from this collection – I wanted you all to see the details!

source
source
source

Below is a tray from the Royal Blue service of Louis XV, “bleu celeste de Louix XV“, manufactured by Vincennes in 1753. He had a whole service of this pattern as the bleu celeste color was highly unusual.

source

Marie Antoinette ordered a dinner service for her apartments in the Tuileries palace in Paris (burned to the ground but what remains is now part of the Louvre). It was completed in May 1784.  However, King Louis XVI decided to present the service as a diplomatic gift to King Gustave III of Sweden. So, there went her service…

source

…or not! Marie Antoinette was determined to have her service. So she commissioned the factory to make more, and later that same year in August she received her service after all!  The service was called “à  frise riche en couleurs et riche en or”.  The plate below looks a little different because it’s a different type of plate in the service.

source

Now, not all of the royal China patterns were fancy with gold and handprinted flowers.  Below is a rather plain plate for Louis-Phillipe for use at the Grand Trianon in 1847.  The Grand Trianon is where the men would hang out and hunt.  The pattern is “l’Office livre au Grand Trianon.”

source

The piece below is from a service called “with garlands of myrtle and barbel“.  Commissioned by Louis XVI in 1783, it was use for the officers of the Service Versailles. Below is a plate from the tea and chocolate service.

source

Below is another service commissioned by Madame du Barry, made in 1770-1771. You can see her initials in the center of the plate.

source

Madame du Barry loved china patterns, as you can see is yet another service she commissioned!  This was is called “à vases et guirlandes” made in 1771.

source

Ok, so, where am I going with this?  Well, on my internet adventures I found that in 1986 Bernardaud purchased one of the royal porcelain companies, Ancienne Manufacture Royale.  You can read about the history of this HERE.

What does that mean? They produce some of the exact same patterns from Marie Antoinette and the royal court!

Below is a picture of the original service “pearl and cornflower” sitting in a museum!

Original Service

And below is a picture of the copycat service, made today by Bernardaud!  No, the pieces are not cheap, but perhaps I could afford one teacup to display!

source

Again, below is a picture of the original rambouillet dairy service made for Marie Antoinette’s Hameau, in 1788.

And below is the new version made by Bernardaud!
source

Below is a pretty pattern originally made by the Manufacture de Clignancourt. It is the Rose Garden service.  The original is in Musee de Montmartre in Paris.  Bernardaud now makes the reproduction.

source

Now, the plates below are not for French royalty, but they were produced by Sevres for Prince William of Hesse in 1829.  The “Botanique” service is unique – every piece is decorated with different flowers.  What was also interesting about this service was that the name of the plants were printed on the back of each plate – the dinner guests were to try to guess the name of the plant.  Bernardaud makes the plates now.

The plate below is a reproduction by Bernardaud from Louis XV service made for Fontainebleau. You can scroll way up and see the original!

source

The plate below is from the “Marie Antoinette Petit Trianon” produced by Raynaud Limoges.  The pattern below is a copy of Marie Antoinette’s monogrammed travel kit.

source

I leave you with a milk pail from Marie Antoinette…

What pattern is YOUR FAVORITE??? Leave a comment!

Did you know that you can search the Collections of the Chateau de Versailles?? That’s where I found a lot of the history and pictures!
