Top Row: pink maxi dress // pink cherry, daisy and bee print dress // romantic bustier dress // beautiful embellished tulle dress

Middle Row: blue printed chiffon maxi dress // stamped floral dress // belted maxi dress

Bottom Row: bright multicolor maxi dress // lace trumpet dress // floral-applique illusion gown // appliquéd silk-organza gown (for looks, only!)

Which one is your favorite??  I think mine is the pink cherry, daisy, and bee print dress for daytime events and the beautiful lace trumpet dress for evenings.

Raspberry Chocolate Hazelnut Macaron Recipe

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

I’m back with another macaron recipe! These ones were super good!  I like to use the French macaron method, as I think it is easier.

This post may contain affiliate links.

Raspberry Chocolate Hazelnut macaron recipe!

If you like raspberries and nutella you will like these!!  Yes, the filling has nutella. I didn’t make my own chocolate hazelnut ganache, I got lazy. Sorry.  These cookies are time consuming enough to make!  I love making them though… they are really quite pretty and you can show off to your friends and family!

Materials needed: (affiliate links are used for your convenience)

    • a food scale (yes, you need this. I use this one)
    • a piping tip and piping bag (I like the ateco #806, I use these tips and piping bag)
    • Food coloring (the gels or dry powder works best, not the liquid store stuff)
    • A macaron template
    • food processor (I use this one)

Laduree Macarons Recipe

275g ground almonds

250g powdered sugar

210g egg whites

210g granulated sugar

1.  Mix almond meal and the powdered sugar in a food processor. Be careful not to grind too long, otherwise it will form a paste.

2. Sift the almonds and powdered sugar. Set aside.

3. Weigh out granulated sugar.

4. Weigh the egg whites.  Beat them slowly on a low speed until foamy. SLOWLY add the granulated sugar to the egg whites as you beat.  Once all mixed, increase speed to medium and beat until a firm meringue forms.  You want a firm meringue with glossy peaks but not stiff peaks.  They should defy gravity and remain in the bowl if you turn it upside down.  If you tilt your bowl to the side and they are sliding out, keep beating.

5. Add the food coloring gel and mix.

6. Then fold in 1/3rd of the almond/sugar mixture into the meringue with a silicone spatula.  Once combined, add another third of the almond mixture. Add last bit.  This batter requires more deflation during this step since it creates such a poofy meringue.

7. Add the batter to a piping bag.  Pipe in rows using your template onto parchment paper.

8. Pick up the pan and beat until the counter.  The cookies need to rest on the counter between 30-60 minutes.  They are ready to go in the oven when they are dry to touch (the shell shouldn’t stick to your finger)

9.  Set the oven to 300F.

10. Bake the cookies for 13-15 minutes, one sheet at a time. They are done when they look kind of matte and seem firm when you lightly tap on them.  You can always rescue a slightly overcooked one with the maturation process that comes later, but you cannot rescue an undercooked one!!

11. Remove from paper once completely cool. If they stick to the paper, they aren’t cool yet. Or you undercooked them.

Raspberry Chocolate Hazelnut macaron recipe!

Filling – for Raspberry Chocolate Macarons

Ingredients:

  • Seedless raspberry jam (For these macarons, the easiest way for the filling is to buy seedless raspberry jam.  I know, it’s cheating! If you really wanted to be fancy, you could make your own.)
  • Nutella

1. Once the cookies are cool, add a dollop of your nutella to one cookie and spread with a small knife, spoon, or icing spatula.  Then add a dollop of raspberry jam.  Don’t push too hard when spreading, otherwise you will break them!

2.  Place the other cookie to your filling, press gently, and slightly twist the two together.

3. Once all assembled, put them in an airtight container and let them mature (yes, that’s the scientific word for this process) in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours.

Now, these cookies won’t be bad if you eat them immediately, they will just be amazing if you wait a day.  The theory is that the juices from the filling soak back into the cookie to make an AMAZING cookie.

Cristina at Bird’s Party shared this DIY marble and copper charger.  It is really simple and it looks elegant!  I think I’m going to have to try this!

You all know I am sucker for *anything* Paris related.  Julia at Auf der Mammilade shared her trip to Paris including pics of an apartment they stayed in.  Her pictures are truly stunning!  The site is in German – here is a link to the English version.

French Country Spring House Tour 2016

I always think Christmas time if my favorite time of year, but now that it’s Spring… I think Spring is my favorite time of year! I just love all of the fresh flowers!

This post may contain affiliate links which means I make a few cents when you click on links.

The biggest way I add Spring decor to the house is to bring in fresh flowers from the garden.  Below, Mr. Swan has dried eucalyptus and ranunculus floating on his back.  My little Staffordshire Swan bud vases are on both sides with pink flowers in them too!  The Faience plates are above them.

I already showed you all my French pink table setting.  The flowers are STILL alive, whew! It’s been over a week!

Spring French table setting with Madeira table cloth, Meissen plates, pink and white ranunculus, and vintage French goblets.

Below is a little Spring vignette on my French marble top console table.  The theme is that of my wedding from several years ago which was a romantic pink and silver theme.  The little white statue below was actually on our table at the wedding and the French vase held wedding flowers.  I blurred out my wedding picture on purpose.

I purchased the table from Eloquence years ago.  It actually hasn’t held up too well with multiple cross-country moves and I’m afraid it is going to break here soon someday.  The little crystal lamp was a RH outlet find for $89!

My formal living room is spruced up for Spring with a few fresh flowers.  I stuck a few in a little Limoges tea cup.  I love the French gilt mirror… it’s my favorite piece!  I love the curtains my Mom made for me… beautiful seamist green check from Chelsea Editions.  My favorite bergere chairs sit in front of them.  For my coffee table I actually use two little French marble top side tables.

Turn the corner and I spy my tulipiere full of more fresh flowers.  This time with carnations and unique ranunculus.  I am working on a table setting with them.

Let’s head out to my little cutting garden.  I have never grown ranunculus before until this year.  We planted them in October.  They have been in bloom for several weeks now.  I didn’t know when they open up they look like anemones.

This Fall I’m going to plant even more ranunculus. I am so happy with how they have turned out!  Oh yes, and anemones too!  I really want to plant the Cloni, Hanoi, and Cappuccino ranunculus varieties. Do you know where I can find those bulbs??

Back inside, oh my, a pretty pink present for someone’s birthday coming up!  Wonder what it could be… guess we’ll find out later.

While taking pictures of this tour, I spy a Chloe cat. She is curled up sleeping on the wool blanket without a care in the world (wait, not true. She cares about her food bowl as she is fat cat and loves to eat).

French Table Setting in Pink

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

What I love most about Spring are the pretty flowers!  I picked up some pretty pink ranunculus from both the flower market and my own garden and put together this Spring French table setting!

This post may contain affiliate links meaning I make a few cents when you click.

Spring French table setting with Madeira table cloth, Meissen plates, pink and white ranunculus, and vintage French goblets.

When putting together this table, I initially used my Juliska “Country Estate” plates.  But then I looked up on my bedroom wall and thought, ah ha!  And the pink plates came down from the wall.

Spring French table setting with Madeira table cloth, Meissen plates, pink and white ranunculus, and vintage French goblets.

The plates are by Meissen and the pattern is “Purple Indian”.  Based on the mark on the back, they are from around the 1850s!

The pink goblets are a recent antique mall score.  They are vintage and made in France.

The table cloth is antique.  It is a Madeira table cloth.  The table cloth is made of organdy, applique, and embroidery.  I’ve taken a close-up to show you the pretty details!

I love my vases!  I hauled back the little bud vases with people from my trip to Paris last year. The pitcher in the center is new (an early birthday present!!) and is also from Astier de Villate.  I just LOVE my new pitcher.  The other little bud vases are Juliska and are retired.

I couldn’t stop photographing the flowers. They are so photogenic.  Did you notice I hid some geraniums in the little bud vases?

This was the first year I have grown my own ranunculus. They are so pretty out in the garden; I hated picking them but then I brought them in and didn’t regret it!

French Chinoiserie and How to Add Chinoiserie Decor to Your Home

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Today’s post is about Chinoiserie decor and how to add it to your home.  If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you may be thinking, uhh, what’s this have to do with your Euro-centric decorating style? Well, let me explain.  First, what is Chinoiserie? It is a French word that means “in the Chinese style”.  It is a European style of decorating that reached its height of popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries.  It was made extremely popular by Louis XIV and his Petit Trianon. This post may contain affiliate links.

That’s why when decorating with French design in mind, using Chinoiserie is totally acceptable!  A lot of it is from France!  One of the prominent artists was Jean-Baptiste Pillement.  He is the artist that is most widely known for popularizing Chinoiserie and is also known for French Rococo.  He designed for many of the royal courts of Europe.

French Chinoiserie and How to Add Chinoiserie Decor to Your Home
Jean Baptiste Pillement’s chinoiserie panel

Most people do not know that Chinoiserie is not from China!  Most of the works that the artists created were influenced by original Chinese works and then stylized with a whimsical European spirit!  This significantly cheaper than importing the real deal!  Owning a piece of Chinoiserie made you the ultimate style icon.  That’s one reason why the Chinoiserie style is so versatile – it’s a mix of real and fake!

French Chinoiserie and How to Add Chinoiserie Decor to Your Home
Louis XIV marquetry chest with chinoiserie silk wall paper

There are ways to add some Chinoiserie style into your home, French-style or not! The style had a huge repertoire: wallpapers, porcelain, silk, fans, fabrics, faux bois bamboo furniture, and lacquered furniture!

French Chinoiserie and How to Add Chinoiserie Decor to Your Home

While it seems like Chinoiserie is becoming a popular decor trend, I see it more as a timeless decor trend… it’s been around for hundreds of years!  Now, don’t get to themed with this style.  A piece or two of it in the room and that’s it!

French Chinoiserie and How to Add Chinoiserie Decor to Your Home

Reconstruction of how Madame de Pompadour’s room looked like

So, let’s look an some examples of how to incorporate Chinoiserie style into modern times…

1.  Adding Porcelain Plates
You can arrange blue chinoiserie plates on the wall, like the two pictures below.

French Chinoiserie and How to Add Chinoiserie Decor to Your Home

Don’t you just love this French kitchen below and the painted walls and ceiling?

2. Decorating with interesting vases

A popular way to add Chinoiserie to your home is decorating with the blue and white vases.  I like how they are styled in the picture below.  Notice the French settee!

However if the blue and white porcelain is not your thing, you could always decorate with a pretty vase like this below! I love the colors of this.

Louis XIV terracotta vase

Or for a more minimalist look, prints of blue vases are displayed on the gallery wall.  Notice the bamboo frames.

3. Decorate with Wallpaper
Now, this is my favorite option however it *is* the most expensive option!!  It makes for such a pretty room.  Using the wallpaper in a powder room is your most cost effective option!

Below, this pretty pink room is adorned with pink Chinoiserie wallpaper which brings out the pretty pink hues in the Swedish settee.  They also added some Chinoiserie fabric pillows.  Adding a few pillows is another option!

4. Decorate with Chinoiserie Panels

I liked this room below in a hotel in Paris.  It is mid-century modern style which I’m sure appeals to many people, as well as a Chinoiserie panel in the background. You can spot it in the back left with black and gold.

Below is a panel of chinoiserie wallpaper.  I love the French day bed in front of it!

grisaille wallpaper

Decorating with panels is a cheaper way to add the wallpaper look to your room.  Just purchase one panel and frame it!

5. Add Chinoiserie fabric

Another way to add the Chinoiserie look to your house is to add some fabric somewhere.  This house below has some Chinoiserie blue-vase curtains – a modernized version of Chinoiserie.

This French Louis IV chair below is covered in a pretty chinoiserie toile!

6. Add a piece of Furniture
Here, you can see a fabulous Louis style cabinet in the Chinoiserie style black and gold lacquer!

Below are some of my Chinoiserie style pieces… an antique Mora clock!  It blends in well with the French painting and cabinet to the right.

I also have a Chinoiserie style tulipiere (vase).  It blends in well with my little French bud vases.

In this month’s Veranda, there is an article about German architect Peter Nolden and his beautiful 17th century thatched roof country cottage!  The house is located outside of Hamburg in Schleswig-Holstein, just off the North Sea in an area where my Grandmother grew up. The interior design is Scandinavian.  The website is in German, but you don’t need to read German to click pictures!! Check out the slideshow here!

I was out shopping this weekend and found these cute hexagonal honey soaps!  They are made in Switzerland and smell wonderful! I bought one to put in my linen closet.   Do you do that?  It’s a nice way to keep your linen smelling fresh – just place a little hand soap in between the pillow cases and it will keep your linen smelling nice until you’re ready to use the sheets.  The only place I could find that sells it is here.

My other favorite soap to put in between my linens is Pre de Provence’s Verbena soap. I buy these tiny hand soaps and put them in between lots of linens!

Well, this past Easter weekend we worked on the garden.  We planted three different varieties of strawberries, tomatoes, jalapeños, poblano peppers, serrano peppers, zucchini, squash, green beans, corn, spinach, romaine lettuce, mixed greens, basil, cilantro… and a few others I can’t remember.  Most of them are from seed.  I love watching the plants grow! It’s amazing they grow so big from one tiny little seed!

Hello friends! Can you believe it’s almost April??  Before we know it, it will be time for Summer BBQ’s!!  My favorite thing this week was… Easter!!  Easter day we went on a hike with relatives – 6 miles, which was a lot for me. I was sore! But that’s okay, I had to work off some Easter chocolates!!

Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop and Link Party

On to this week’s features!! I tweet, pin, and spread the love on google plus for all of my favorite links for the week. I’d love to do the same for everyone that joins, but I don’t have time! (Wish I did have the time, though!)

Pattie at Olla-Podrida wrote about creating a seasonal basket vignette.  Now that I’m writing this, this has inspired me to go make some tea…

Sheila at My Kentucky Living shared this cute Easter vignette.  I love the pastel colored eggs and the little chicks!

Sheila at Maison de Cinq shared a very pretty post about Swedish Mora clocks.  I think she may be my blogging twin, I was thinking about Mora clocks that same day too!

Raquel at Organized Island shared about her trip to Vienna.  She includes good advice for first time visitors. I’ve never been to Vienna but it’s on my bucket list!

A Diptyque “Baies” Candle Review and Cheap Copycat!

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

I’ve written before about my love for the Baies candle made by Diptyque.  But I do not love the price!  It’s such a special smelling candle that I don’t want to burn it… but then at the same time, it smells so good I *need* to burn it!

The copycat I found is approximately half the price of Diptyque!  This candle will make your home smell like a little slice of France!

By the way, “Baies” is pronounced like “Bay”.

A Diptyque Baies Copycat Candle

The “Baies” candle by Diptyque is made with Bulgarian roses and black currant leaves.  It is $60 for 6.5 ounces with an estimated burn time of 60 hours. There is a smaller candle (the one I have, pictured below) that goes for $32 for 2.4 ounces. The smaller candle estimated burn time is $30 hours.

A Diptyque Baies Copycat Candle and Review

There are actually TWO copycat candles!

The first copycat candle is the Henri Bendel “Black Currant” candle – however it seems like they no longer make it.

The SECOND copycat candle is the Rose Otto candle by Voluspa. It comes in multiple sizes – the smallest size is a little macaron and is under $15, then there is a medium size, a large size, and a gigantic size.

If the above links don’t work, here is a widget that should have some links that work

Tor splurge and get the original Diptyque Baies here.  If you don’t like candles, I’ve just discovered Baies comes in a room spray that I just purchased and I love it! Get the room spray here! I actually use the room spray in my bedroom and closet.

Here are some hints about keeping your candle in tip-top burning shape!  After all, even the copycat candle is not super cheap!

First Time Burning the Candle

Allow it to burn for 2 hours, until the whole top is liquid with wax. This helps it burn evenly in future burns.

Trimming the Wick

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to 1/4 inch length.  This helps it burn more slowly and avoids the ugly smoke marks on your candle.

Burning the Candle

Do not burn your candle for more than 3-4 hours at a time.  I heard from the Diptyque salesman that the little candles are only supposed to be burned 1 hour at a time!

Realigning the Wick

After blowing out the candle, realign and straight the wick to the center, if it moved!

I would like to say that writing Five on Friday is probably my favorite blogpost that I write every week.  I hope you all have been enjoying the Five on Friday posts that I’ve been doing!

On the Net

I found this article about this pretty home in California built in the French Chateau style.  It’s absolutely beautiful.  Enjoy the house tour here.  To be honest, living here is probably nicer than living in one of the old French chateaus… less maintenance!!

Spotted
Ok everyone! It’s Nordstrom’s Triple Points week!!  If you are a Nordstrom card holder, do not let this opportunity go to waste! So, yes, I’ve been shopping!!  This is what I’ve purchased…

1 – These are my favorite sandals and I have them in gold and just bought them in Navy.  I can’t sing enough praise about them: Tory Burch ‘Miller’ Flip Flop

2 – As I’m headed to Hawaii next month, I’m trying out different sunscreens. My mom swears by this one: Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion SPF 50+

3– But this Clinique Sunscreen SPF 50 for the face is about half the price. So I think I’m going to go with this one.

4– Now, I know we all love these Valentino ‘Rockstud’ Gladiator Sandals!  But they are a splurge. Well guess what… I found a knock off…
5-…here’s the knock off! Rebecca Minkoff ‘Georgina’ Studded Leather Sandal. It’s like… 1/10 the price! They’re on their way in the mail, I hope I like them!
6– I felt like the knock off was a mix between this version: Valentino ‘Rockstud’ Sandal and the version in #4!
7– Ted Baker London ‘Hanging Gardens’ Silk Scarf – Isn’t this such a pretty silk scarf??  My mom actually bought it (but I am going to borrow it from her closet!)
8– Lavender spa blanket – okay. This is my *favorite* thing to use when I’m having sore muscles or menstrual cramps. You just throw it in the microwave for a minute or two.  Then you put it on whatever is sore.  It’s a pretty big size, so you can wrap it around your shoulders like a shawl. Oh, did I mention the lavender makes a nice aromatherapy? I bought a new one because mine was super old.
9 –  I ordered these drawstring Linen Pants.  I thought they would be nice for the airplane (yes I know they will get wrinkled, I don’t really care). I also thought they would be a nice transition from Spring to Summer!

Favorite Instagram
I saw this picture from @fabiolacapomillinery on Instagram and I thought it was just so pretty! I had to share it with you all!  I also feature it on my instagram!

Personal
This week in my spare time I’ve been updating my blog.  I have two new pages, Building a French Farmhouse and Trip to Paris. I’ve updated the About Me page as well.  I’ve added the SumoMe app making it easier to share posts!

Almost a year to date I wrote this post about antique Swedish mora clocks!  I was dreaming about them, then I bought my own! I hope you’ll read the post, if you like mora clocks you’ll love all of the clocks in the post!
