Well, this week felt like the first week of Spring over here in California.  Sorry for all of those that are living where it snows… but the first trees are now blooming, the daffodils are in full bloom, and everything else is budding out!

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

1.This beautiful house in Provence!  It is owned by Frederic Fekkai (you know, of shampoo fame).  It was featured in March’s Architectural Digest issue.  You need to check it out here

I just *love* this driveway entrance to his house. LOVE.

 2. Napa Valley
We went to Napa Valley this week… just because. It was 80 degrees there! It was so pretty as the mustard was all blooming.  I don’t drink so I never go to Napa for the wine, but instead for food, shopping, and taking in the pretty views!

3. Diptyque

Had fun playing around with my new perfume, called Do Son by Diptyque. It has a nice scent for Spring.. tuberose, orange leaves, pink peppercorn, rose, and iris.

 4. Bouchon Bakery
Went to Bouchon Bakery in Yountville.  Previously I had been to the one in Las Vegas and wasn’t too impressed… I think perhaps the 110 degree heat didn’t treat the pastries very well…. because this time I had shared an almond croissant which was very good, a lemon currant scone which was tasty, and a hazelnut macaron which was also quite nice.  I recommend going here. Oh, the salted caramel latte was delicious! oh yum yum! Check out Bouchon Bakery and the locations here

5. Love Macarons

I leave you with this croquembouche-style macaron tree.

Recreated Design made this side table using vintage suitcases that she painted. Isn’t it cool?

2. Pretty Flowers
I filled my tulipiere again with pretty flowers!! This time I used white carnations, purple mums, and seeded eucalyptus!  I chose these flowers because I knew they would last a long time… I’ve actually had them up for nearly 2 weeks. The mums wilted but the other flowers are going strong!

3. B. Patisserie in San Francisco

This past weekend we ventured in San Francisco and ate at a fabulous bakery called B. Patisserie.  I am still staring at this pretty picture I took… we had cappuccinos, croissants, and more!!  A full review is coming this Sunday morning!

Did you watch it this past Sunday? If you didn’t, I’m sorry to say you missed a hit!

It was really REALLY good, actually.  I loved how Boyz II Men played Teen Angels!

I think Vanessa Hudgens from High School Musical fame did a better job playing Rizzo then Stockard Channing!  Anyway, if you missed it, hopefully they will re-air it because it was worth watching!

Since I’m now co-hosting Thursday Favorite Things, I figured I couldn’t have two posts in a week called “Favorite Things”. So I’ve changed my previously titled “Friday Favorites” to “Five on Friday”.  Same stuff, different name.  I think I just like a lot of things is the problem!

This cute phone case…

I already have a Kate Spade wallet but this one is so cute…

and, oh my gosh, a pail of roses! Not really, it’s a purse, but seriously, how cute is it? Practical? No. Adorable? YES!

3. This floral arrangement. Isn’t it dreamy?? I wish I could recreate this at home!!

4. Jo Malone Herb Garden Collection

Jo Malone will be introducing 5 new scents in March!  I love Jo Malone Colognes and I am interested to try these latest scents.  What I love about Jo Malone is that she does scent mixing – so you can mix different scents and blend them and they go really well together.

5. Ummm, I guess it’s Spring??

Sooooo… the daffodils we planted last Fall started blooming this week. WHAT?!!!!  It’s still January. Like, the whole rest of the country just had a massive blizzard and over here our daffodils are blooming. I can’t believe it!!  I mean I knew Spring came early in California but I didn’t know it was *this* early! Not that I’m complaining, I’m totally ready for Spring (and for it not to be dark at 5pm!).

I guess it doesn’t even matter what the Groundhog has to say next week… Spring is here!

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Cabinet Makeover

I’m excited to share with you all a chalk paint cabinet makeover that I did.  It took me a total of 4 hours – start to finish. No joke! It’s super easy to do! The nice part about chalk paint is that you don’t have to apply a base or a topcoat. You just start painting and voila! You’re done!  While I know there a million tutorials online, this is just my review of using the paint!

AFTER – Annie Sloan Cabinet Makeover

I saw so many tutorials I thought I ought to see what the big deal is with chalk paint. The cabinet I started with is actually one my Grandfather made. He used to build cabinets and he literally had hundreds of them laying around his house and outside.  This one is the one he kept in his bedroom, so I’m assuming it was one of his favorites since he chose it for himself.

Cabinet BEFORE

When he passed away, I knew I wanted one of the cabinets. I chose this one.  Unfortunately, the color of the wood is not my thing. I didnt want to have it laying around in the garage, so I knew that I had to fix it up.  Opa (as we called him) never painted wood. He thought wood should be shown in its natural glory. So let’s not tell him we painted it.

I like the vintage shabby chic feel of the cabinet!

Before painting, I wiped the spiderwebs off and sanded down a few parts of rough surfaces.  Then, I just applied one coat of Paris Grey. Just one coat! That’s it. It dries super fast and honestly the top of the cabinet was dry before I was even half way done! (Granted it WAS 100 degrees that day!) I couldn’t believe how EASY using chalk paint was! SO EASY!!

To give it a little bit of texture and aged finish, I did brush some clear wax onto parts and rub it in.   I used the special wax brush for this.  After using the brush, I used an old t shirt and rubbed the wax in to get rid of the clumps. It made the paint color a little darker.  You can kind of notice it at the bottom of the cabinet in the picture above. The wax helps seal the paint. If you’re painting a dresser or a piece with high use, you NEED to put wax on it to help with wear and tear.

For the brown trim around the glass, I applied some dark wax.  To apply the dark wax, I just used an old t-shirt and rubbed it in.Then, after applying the dark wax I applied clear wax on top. I used the wax brush to apply the clear wax. Then I rubbed it in with an old t-shirt. The dark wax filled into the deeper crevices and made the trim stand out more.

What about Buying Annie Sloan’s Paint Brushes?? – now, they will try to sell you one brushes when you go into one of their stockists.  I actually did buy their special wax brush to apply the wax. Then I used a regular paint brush for the chalk paint itself.

I don’t need to explain to you how to do it. Annie Sloan’s Website has many video tutorials. It’s so super easy, but go watch some of the videos before you start!

I also used the Purple Painted Lady’s tutorials. She has lots of information and videos as well.

Here, my cabinet is filled with little treasures. Some faux hens and chicks candles, little houses, favorite Paris postcards, mini steins, German handmade angels, favorite little napkins! I actually hung it in a powder room. I love the new old cabinet! Plus, I can still keep my Opa’s cabinet!

Sitting in the center of the kitchen island is this Winter centerpiece I created. The chef tree went away and out came my beloved antique dough bowl!

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

I filled the dough bowl with pinecones of different sizes, both real and white candle pinecones.  The centerpiece are two little white candle houses and tree.  Some faux greenery is tucked away in the bowl as well.

Two boxwood wreaths hang above the little scene. These wreaths are I think two years old… a spritz of fresh water every 1-2 months keeps them fresh.

I will confess, I actually have a Valentine Heart now sitting in the center of the boxwood wreaths, but I took these pictures before I did that!

It’s FRIDAY! FRIYAY! This week I have some exciting news to share…

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

We got a new kitty cat!! We named her Chloe.  We rescued he from the animal shelter last weekend.  She cried the whole way home (with tears… never seen a cat cry tears).  She is estimated to be about 3 years old (although I think she is older). She has been a sweet little kitty so far. She is a Russian Blue Mix.

She likes nap time and cuddles. She purrs all of the time.   We are slowly introducing her to the house. We’ve been enjoying our little kitty friend so far. Her pretty green eyes glow. She is napping next to me right now.

These Ugg Boots.…I want to talk about these Ugg boots I got for Christmas. At first I was a little unsure, as I didn’t want to be one of “those girls” wearing Ugg boots. But then I put them on and my feet were hugged with the softness I immediately understood why people wear them all of the time.  I have been wearing them nonstop since I got them. I haven’t worn mine outside, they are a about-the-house shoe for me, but seriously. Once you put them on you won’t want to take them off!

This candle. It was a splurge I used with my Nordstrom notes. I’ve always wanted to try this candle company. It’s by”Diptyque”, a company in Paris. The fragrance I purchased is one of their top sellers called “baies”. This scent has the freshness of roses and the smell of blackcurrant leaves. It is really nice and refreshing. It’s not just any type of rose, it uses Bulgarian roses which of course are more luxurious and have a fruity scent.   It smells so nice. Just opening the box up produces an aroma in the room.

This French Townhouse. You HAVE to see this beautiful townhouse. The story is on Cote de Texas’ blog.

Here is a pic of the outside of this complex. It’s designed to look like a Parisian city block. Isn’t it darling?

Look below! It really does look like a little slice of Paris -but with better plumbing and air conditioning! Sign me up! You really need to go check it out. The condo is decorated with fabulous French antiques. Here is the link again.  Pics are from that blog post.

Barbour Beadnell Coat Review and Style Ideas

I received a Barbour Beadnell coat for Christmas and I thought I would write about my opinions on the coat!
This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

The Barbour Beadnell coat is made of a waxed cotton. When it rains, the raindrops just drop right off of the wax.  It has a corduroy collar around the face which helps wick away the drops from your face.

It has two smaller pockets that you can put your hands that are lined with moleskin – it helps keep your hands nice and warm on wet rainy days! I love this feature!

The plaid is also cute and you can roll up the sleeve to show it off.

It also has two larger pockets – you can put your phone in it. There are holes at the bottom of these big pockets – small ones, built in on purpose, so if you happen to be sea shelling, you can put them in your coat and the water will drip right on out!

Barbour started in England in 1894.  It is one of the few companies to have received 3 royal warrants – from the Queen, Prince Philip and Prince Charles.

Barbour coats can last for years. You just have to send them into be re-waxed occasionally to keep them in tip top shape.  You can send them into Orvis if you live by one or the official Barbour store in the USA.

I love my coat. I bought the detachable hood for the coat and it is wonderful in the rain. It has a built in metal wire in it so the hood stays propped up and so it doesn’t fall in your face!

Here I am showing off my coat. Sorry for the phone pictures… it’s hard to take a picture of yourself!  I wanted to show how I like to wear it and show off the little hand pocket.

You can roll up the sleeve once and show off the cute little tartan plaid inside! You can also kind of see the plaid on the inside of the hood. I like to wear it with my riding boots and my brown LV.

Lots of celebrities wear the coats too…

How I imagine how the English really wear their boots and coats…

This is from a cute blogger, classy girls wear pearls…

And the picture below too…

from classy girls wear pearls

Below is another cute blogger, College Prepster, who wears her coat quite often…

from the college prepster

Below are some outfit idea boards I put together on how you can style your Barbour coat…

For board one, I like to wear my coat most with my riding boots. Pair it with a plaid shirt, some jeans (white or dark!), and a statement necklace.

The next look is for those rainy days…

Pair a chunky knit sweater with those Hunter rain boots and a nice scarf!

The next look is for running around town…

You can pair your stylish workout leggings with a grey sweatshirt. Can you believe grey sweatshirts are all the rage in Paris right now? Pair them with some low boots (or even tennis shoes) and a purse with a shoulder strap so you can do your errands or sightseeing!

Below, you can shop the post. Affiliate links are used.

All and all, I am loving my coat. It wasn’t cheap but I haven’t bought a new raincoat in 10 years. So I think it was time! I can say when I wear mine with my leather riding boots I feel positively English!

Hope you all enjoyed the post!

An English Tea with a Lemon Scone Recipe

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Doesn’t it look like Spring in the picture below?? We went to the flower market and bought some fresh flowers. January is so blah outside.  After arranging the flowers in the tulipiere, my Mom and I sat down and have a lovely Afternoon Tea like the Brits! Tea time certainly raises the mood on a blustery, wet ,and dreary day.

I like the ombre look this arrangement. Dark pink tulips on the bottom, light pink tulips in the middle, and white tuberose on top. The tuberose smells heavenly.

Now, onto the simple scone recipe. It was really easy to make. Took me less than an hour from start to finish.

Now, I initially wanted to make these scones from Simply Suzanne’s, but I didn’t have vanilla beans. But you know what I have? LEMONS. Lemons are coming out of my ears over here. We have so many Meyer lemon trees it borders on ridiculous. (I like the look of a lemon tree surrounded by lavender in the garden). So I added some lemon zest and made a lemon glaze to the simple cream scone recipe.

Lemon Scone Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 5 Tbsp unsalted butter, cut into little chunks and chilled
  • 1 cup heavy cream (slightly less than 1 cup)
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • juice of 1 lemon ** note: measure it out in a measuring cup so you know how much liquid you added!

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 450F. (I actually did it on 425 on convection bake)
  2. In a food processor, pulse together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together.
  3. Add the zest of one lemon and the lemon juice and pulse, about 3 times total.
  4. Scatter the butter on top of the flour mixture, then pulse together until it looks like coarse meal, about 12 pulses. (Or you can always cut the butter in with a pastry cutter, fork, small knife or even your hand!
  5. Now for measuring the cream… remember you measured the juice of 1 lemon? Now subtract the amount of juice of lemon from 1 cup and then add that amount of cream to the scone. For example, my lemon made 1/8 cup of juice, so I added 7/8 cup cream. I don’t have an exact number of how much cream to add because every lemon is a different size.Or if that’s too hard just add 1 cup of cream. Ok, stir the cream into the flour mixture.
  6. Now, put the mixture of the dough onto a floured counter surface and knead together until a slightly sticky ball forms, only about10 seconds. You do not want to over work the dough. Some large chunks of butter are okay.
  7. Pat the dough into a circle that’s about 9 inches, then slice into 8 wedges.
  8. Transfer the wedges to a baking sheet lined with Silpat or parchment paper.
  9. Bake until the the tops of the scones are lightly golden brown, approximately 12-15 minutes.
  10. Transfer to the wire rack and let cool at least 10 minutes before enjoying!

Lemon Glaze Recipe

  • 1 cup confectioner’s sugar (powdered sugar)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • 3-4 tsp of water, lemon juice, or milk

Mix together all of the ingredients in the glaze, adding more sugar or less liquid depending on how thick it is. Spread it on the scones.

The tea we enjoyed was purchased on our trip to Paris. It is Laduree’s House tea and it is really nice.  I wrote about my trip to the Laduree Tea Room here.

One last look at our nice little afternoon tea. We certainly felt British with the rain pouring outside today!
