Which Christmas Tree is for me?

Today is a guide about choosing your Christmas Tree.

1. Where do you want to get one?

do you want cut your own, do you want a pre-cut, or do you want a fake tree?  Today I’m only going to be blogging about the different live trees.

2. Measure your space.

Measure the ceiling height and the width of your space. Most trees are cut to an 80% taper, so trees that are 10 feet tall will be 8 feet wide. Don’t pull a Clark Griswold here.

3. Learn about the different types

doug fir

Douglas Fir: Boasting a pyramidal shape and blue to dark green needles, the doug fir dependable, long-lived cut tree.

Fraser Fir: A regal, richly fragrant native tree, iti has bicolor needles — deep green on top, silvery white below. Its generally slender profile suits small rooms.

Noble Fir: With its cool blue-green, well-spaced branches and densely set, upwardly curved needles. It’s most often a cut tree, since it grows happily only in its Pacific Northwest home. This is my favorite type, but I am from the Pacific Northwest!

Scotch Pine: A classic conical shape and excellent needle retention, it is the most popular cut tree of the holidays.

Eastern White Pine: Soft green color, long needles, and rich fragrance make it worthy of yuletide focus. This pine produces long, decorative cones.

Virginia Pine: It is a first pick among Christmas trees for Southerners. It’s also a good cut tree because, like all pines, it holds its needles well.

Grand Fir: With bicolor needles — deep green on top, white-striped underneath — it makes a rich foil for ornaments

Eastern Red Cedar: Native to the eastern half of North America, it makes a great cut or living tree with homespun appeal and pungent fragrance.

white spruceWhite Spruce: bluish-green short needles, that are stiff and are great for holding ornaments.

4.  Look for freshness

While you are in front of your dream tree, before you decide to take home, make sure that it is fresh.  Here’s a quick and easy test:  run a branch through your enclosed hand. Needles should not come off easily. If they do, choose another one!  Also look for excessive needle loss, musty smell, needle pliability: if the tree has 1 or all of these things, move on!

5.Don’t forget your supplies!

Bring rope to tie your tree down. If you want to a you-cut farm, don’t forget your saw! Have your stand ready when you get home.  A flashlight might be useful too.

6. Keep your tree alive!

Here’s a link to tips on how to keep your tree alive so it doesn’t look sad like Charlie Brown’s tree!

I hope you enjoyed my Christmas tree guide.  When I was 2 years old, I was pictured on the front page Thanksgiving weekend running through a Christmas tree farm.  I grew up in the Christmas tree growing states  (uh, yeah, Washington is the Evergreen state and Oregon has a Doug Fir on its license plate!)

My information was taken from the  National Christmas Tree Association and BHG.

My Second Favorite Christmas Store… Roger’s Gardens!

Earlier I had share with you my FAVORITE Christmas store… Kaethe Wohlfahrt.  The problem is… that store’s in GERMANY. Great.

So my next favorite Christmas store is Roger’s Gardens located in Newport Beach, CA.  I had a post about them earlier with their Fall and Halloween decorations.

They have tons of great Christmas decorating ideas and items for purchase!

A cool fireplace

decorations!

They have a WHOLE bunch of themed trees. I guarantee you can find at least one tree that would appeal to you.  I did not post pictures of all the trees because some of my pics are very blurry!

If you don’t have a working fireplace, you could always stack the wood up like below. I think this fireplace is very cute!

Another look at the cute red fireplace!

I like how the outdoor area is mainly white and green… you can continue with that decoration until Jan/Feb!

Did looking through these pictures give you any decorating ideas?

Does it make you want to head to your favorite Christmas store?

If you live in Southern California or will be in the area, I HIGHLY recommend stopping by here!

Here is their website

And look what I found… a video they made of this year’s decorations (after all, we are in the land of movie making down here!)

Nutcrackers

I LOVE nutcrackers!  I have some on display year round, but at Christmas time I pull out my Christmas themed nutcrackers.

Let’s take a look at my collection:

A Santa with bird.
With a traditional Bavarian on the left.
Phantom of the Opera on the right.

Now for my favorite…

And my second favorite…

Nutcrackers weren’t popular until after the Tchaikovsky ballet was performed in 1892.  They didn’t become popular in America until after WW2, when the GIs brought them home as gifts.

Now, what to add to my collection next?!

There are two main German nutcracker houses… Christian Steinbach and Christian Ulbricht.  You can usually tell the two apart based on their faces.  Ulbricht faces usually have round noses, Steinbach faces usually look a little meaner.

Ulbricht traditional Santa

Ulbricht Shepherd, I know someone who would like this.

I like him, my college team are the Huskies too!

Ulbricht again

Steinbach, although I have a shorter version of this guy already

Steinbach “Caroler”

Ulbricht, love the cuckoo clock

Ulbricht, a hunter.

Steinbach, Tyrolean Santa

Steinbach, 12 days of Christmas “8 maids a milking”

Ulbricht

Ulbricht
Ulbricht smoker Santa on a moose/reindeer

Or maybe I want a Fall themed one, then I can set one out early?

Ulbricht cat smoker
Ulbricht fall

Ulbricht, pilgrim

These nutcrackers are all large.  Maybe I just need a few traditional toy soldier ones?  Either way, I still only purchase the ones that are made in Germany.  The ones made in China don’t quite look right to me.

Addictive Candy Cane Truffles

Addictive Candy Cane Truffles

AKA Candy cane joe-joe truffles, peppermint joe joe truffles, candy cane oreo truffles, or peppermint oreo truffles.

How can one truffle have so many names?! I don’t know.

Here’s what I do know: they taste like candy cane and they are addictive.

I had my first Oreo truffle a few years ago from a friend.  Then it occurred to me… what if… what if I took Candy Cane Joe-Joes and used that as a base for the Oreo truffle?

So what happened?

THIS happened:

It’s good. Really good. Addictive good.

So let me share the recipe with you.

Ingredients: (makes about 24 truffles) – PRINTABLE RECIPE HERE

  • 1 box Candy Cane Joe-Joes (only found at Trader Joe’s!)
  • 1 8 ounce block of cream cheese
  • Either 1 pack of white, dark, or milk chocolate chips.  (I used white and milk chocolate chips.)
  • Crushed peppermint candies for decorating the top, if desired.

Directions:
1. Add entire box of Candy Cane Joe-Joes to food processor and grind away until it is a fine powder.

Step 1.

2. Add the cream cheese. I cut it into smaller chunks so the food processor would have an easier time at mixing it all.

3. Roll into 1 inch balls. Place onto wax/parchment paper.

1 inch balls.

4. Place the tray of the balls into the freezer for 15-20 minutes.

5. Melt your chocolate.  I use the simple microwave method.  Place your chocolate chips into the microwave. Microwave on half power in 15-20 second intervals.  Stir in between intervals. Heat until melted. DO NOT OVERHEAT.  Burnt chocolate is bad chocolate. If it burns, throw it away and try again.

6. THE SECRET STEP: To make your chocolate easier to dip in and to produce a nice surface color every time, add about 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the melted chocolate.  The vegetable oil will not affect the taste at all.

7. Take balls out of the freezer, several at a time, and dip in chocolate. Place on wax paper, add toppings if desired (like the crushed peppermint candies).

8. Let the chocolate harden, about 1 hour. Enjoy!

Candy Cane Joe-Joe’s are my FAVORITE Christmas cookie.  Trader Joe’s always sell out of them so fast!  Never had them before? Well don’t wait another second, go to Trader Joe’s RIGHT NOW and get some.

So you don’t eat all of truffles prepare them for your next holiday party!  They will go fast!

DIY Christmas Card Holder

DIY Christmas Card Holder

Today I am sharing with you my easy DIY holder for Christmas cards!  I love displaying Christmas cards, but the fancy displays cost quite a bit of money.  I came up with a cost-effective way to display them on my own!

Total project cost: $1 (I already had clothespins and scissors)

Supplies

  • Christmas ribbon
  • clothespins
  • scissors

Instructions

  1. Measure out ribbon, I used about 1 yard.
  2. Attach clothespin at the bottom to use as a weight
  3. Hang on the wall (you may either nail straight into the wall, or I used a folded paperclip and stapled it to the ribbon, then hung on a nail).
  4. Clip Christmas cards onto ribbon with clothespins

Finished product:

As you get more cards, you can make more ribbon strands.

I used a ribbon at the bottom to hide the ugly clothespin.   I think maybe tying a ribbon at the top would help make it look a little better.

ribbon I used has a reindeer pattern, I think it is from Michael’s.

Another way to make this look more festive is to decorate the clothespins.  You can also purchase some on etsy.  A quick look through etsy, I found myself eyeing these:

6 - Mini Holiday Metallic Red + Green Glitter Clothespins with Magnets
May purchase here

Clothespins. Set of Ten. Red and Green Gingham
May purchase here

It wouldn’t take much to replicate these, just some glue with either paper or glitter.

But, I wanted to keep this project simple and cheap.  So this will do for now!

Hopefully this has inspired you to go display your Christmas cards!

Just featured at the Grant Life for “Easy Christmas Desserts!” So excited!

Easy DIY Eggnog Latte Recipe

Eggnog lattes are my favorite Christmas drink.  All of your favorite coffee shops charge $4-$5 for one.

They also have 400 calories in them too.

Not this one.

INGREDIENTS: PRINTABLE RECIPE HERE
– 1/4 cup of eggnog (either full fat or light fat)
– 3/4 cup of milk (either non fat, 1%, or 2%)
– Strong coffee
– Nutmeg for drizzle

For non-Nespresso users:

  1. Brew 1/2 cup of strong dark coffee.
  2. In the meantime, heat milk and eggnog together in the microwave until warm.  Whisk quickly to create a foam on top.
  3. Mix the milk/eggnog and coffee together.  Adjust amount of eggnog to your own taste.
  4. Drizzle nutmeg on top. Enjoy!

For Nespresso users:

  1. Choose a pod type. To make the latte exactly as pictured I used the blue lungo, Vivalto.  I usually prefer the purple regular one, Arpeggio.
  2. Add eggnog and milk to the Aeroccino.
  3. Mix the two.
  4. Drizzle nutmeg on top. Enjoy!

To make the eggnog latte a bit more calorie friendly, use either less eggnog, use low-fat eggnog, as well as using non-fat milk.

This homemade eggnog latte is delicious, budget friendly, and friendlier to your waist line!

My Favorite Christmas Store… Käthe Wohlfahrt!

Today I am sharing with you my favorite Christmas store… Käthe Wohlfahrt. (say it like ‘Katie Vowl-fart’)

However, there is one problem.  She is located in Germany! Noooooo!!!

Store front in Oberammergau, Germany

Store front

A christmas room!

Pyramids!

Big pyramids!

a really neat lighted Schwibbogen

an even prettier Schwibbogen! Too bad it won’t plug into U.S. power outlets! (Or I guess good thing for my wallet!)

a neat lighted tree!

I had never seen these before, so here’s another

Nutcrackers!

Even more!

Even prettier ones!

I took more pictures but in my excitement in the store I had a hard time holding the camera still!

This is only 1 of 2 stores we went to Oberammergau.

Angel musicians by “Wendt and Kuhn”… Love these!

can you believe this place?

This is her flagship store located in Rothenburg ob der Tauber:

Yes, it looks like this 365 days a year! I had the pleasure of visiting 10 years ago.

At the Rothenburg ob der Tauber location, there is even a Christmas museum!

If that’s not enough incentive to get you to visit her shop, look at one of the picturesque villages she is located in:

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

All of her locations are here.  Guess what?! There IS a store in the USA. But it’s in Minnesota. And I don’t know when I will ever be in Minnesota again.

If you are headed to Germany to go to the Christmas markets, here are all of the locations

So good news, the store ships worldwide! You can look through her online shop here!

In addition to selling brands like Steinbach and Ulbricht, she also has her own manufacturing shop. Here’s a look at some of her items:

What do you like from her shop?

I hope you enjoyed!  I enjoyed looking at my pictures again!

O Tannenbaum

Well, the tree is up!
Let’s take a look at her:

I like how the red pops out from the tree.  I found the cardinal tree topper at Pottery Barn last year.

My faux-kitty cat sits under the tree. She promises never to climb the tree.

My vintage German ornament

One of my favorite ornaments, Steiff’s “Kitten in a Mitten”.

Snowden, who is an animated snowman, sits and plays music in front of the tree.

Yes, I have a fake tree.  It’s hard finding real trees in Southern California… that look good.

So I settled for a fake one for now.

I love having the tree on… it provides such nice ambient light.

isn’t it pretty?

Advent Calendars

Advent Calendars

Do you have an Advent calendar?  Advent calendars are traced back to the 1800s.  Advent marks the beginning of the Christmas season for many churches.  In 1839, the first public Advent wreath was hung in Hamburg, Germany.  In 1902, the first printed Advent calendar was made.  After that, each year the calendar evolved eventually into a calendar with 24 little doors.

The practice ended during WW2 to save paper.  After the war, printing resumed.  The traditional advent calendars only revealed a picture behind their doors, but soon began to include chocolate and toys.

First, here’s my advent calendar:

Yep, my advent calendar is a gingerbread house!

I fill mine with mini ornaments.  When I take the decorations down, I place the ornaments randomly back inside.  That way, every year I am surprised because I never remember what they all look like!

Let’s look at some Advent calendars!

A nativity scene for kids

many calendars take the shape of trees

this one is also a music box
Do you recognize this one? It’s from Christmas Vacation

how cute is this train one?

Another wooden one, with all of its doors exposed

In Germany, some of the towns actually have building size Advent calendars!!

Here are two pictures of some really big calendars!

Isn’t this cute?
another cute real life calendar!

Alright, enough blogging, I need to go see what’s behind the door of my advent calendar!

Hope you enjoyed another post on my “25 days of Christmas” marathon!

25 Days of Christmas!

Hello!  Welcome to the first day of 25 days of Christmas!  Every day up until Christmas day I will have a Christmas-related post up for your reading pleasure.  Why?  Because I LOVE the Christmas season.

Yes I started the last day of November.

So without further ado, I present to you:

Since one of the joys of Christmas is gift-giving, I will share with you my Christmas Gift Guide!

Christmas Gift Guide 2013

I’m going to share with you today some of my favorite gift ideas for 2013!

For women

Nordstrom “Butter” slipper socks, $7, may purchase here

These are the best slipper socks.  They are super soft and comfy.  You will see a lot of copycats out there. Many years ago these were the first ones that appeared in the stores at Christmas time.  I love giving these away as gifts!  Great stocking stuffers too!  The closest in softness and general wear and tear are sold at Bath and Body Works (however BBW’s are Shea-infused and you leave little footprints everywhere!)

Sonoma Lavender Gift Blanket $60, may purchase here

This lovely blanket is about 1 yard long by 18 inches wide.  You put it in the microwave for about 1.5 minutes, and voila! Instant relaxation.  It is full of lavender and buckwheat.  The aroma after heating in addition to the warmth provided is a very nice treat!

Clarisonic Mia 2, $150, may purchase here

This is a WONDERFUL invention.  I have had mine for 2 years and my face has never felt this great.  After 1 use the results were amazing.  This is a great product for anyone, but especially teenagers and their acne prone skin.  I can never go back to regular face washing again!  This has changed my daily beauty routine!

For Men

Ugg Ascot Slipper $100, may purchase here

My husband has a pair of these and he loves them.  It’s hard to get a guy to comment on clothing.  ‘Nuff said.

Apple TV, $99, may purchase here

I’ve had mine for several years and it is great!  You can watch movies and tv shows (buy or rent!) straight from this device.  You can watch youtube, sports channels, HBO go, radio, netflix, hulu, and many more!  LOVE this thing!

Razors
I know razors can be expensive.  My husband highly recommends the “dollar shave club” online.  You select one of their razors and they send you a new one every month.  To see how it works, click here.   To buy a gift card, click here.

For Children

I think shopping for children can be either very easy or very difficult, depending on their age.  Some of our friends have rules “no toys for gifts”.  That means, what, books for Christmas?! (reference to this youtube video!)

Raskullz Helmets, $20-$25, may purchase here

How neat are these?  They are helmets!  Kids actually might be excited to wear a helmet.  You can trick them into thinking they are toys but really you are improving their safety!

For girls…

An American Girl Doll! They have historical dolls with books that teach young girls about history, in addition to having a story about the girl growing up during that historical period.  They also have modern day ones and dolls you can order that look like you… but I like the historical dolls because it also teaches kids something about history.  Doll and book $110. (Ironically, the price has only gone up $10 since the early ’90s… not too bad!)

For Boys.

Star Wars Legos. Price Range $20-$150.

Hopefully that provided you with some ideas! Happy shopping!

My Favorite Things: Nespresso Coffee Machine

Today I am sharing with you another one of my favorite things: a Nespresso maker!

My husband and I received this as a Christmas present last year as our Keurig broke… and we LOVE it.

I will give you some comparisons between the Nespresso and the Keurig.

We also have the aeroccino, which froths your milk in about 40 seconds!  It is GREAT!

It makes a shot of foamy, delicious espresso in 10 seconds. It takes about 10 seconds for the machine to warm up.  So… in less than a minute you have your own homemade latte ready!

When you are thinking about purchasing this machine, keep in mind, it IS an espresso machine. So it makes an espresso shot of coffee, NOT a big huge cup of coffee like the Keurig.

The pods cost $0.60 each, about the same price for K-cups on the Keurig.  They now have 21 different types of pods (they call them “Grand Crus”).

colorful Grand Crus

The Grand Crus have regular espresso shots and then “Lungos” which brew a *slightly* larger espresso shot.  They have seasonal offerings and recently added chocolate, caramel, and vanilla to their regular flavors.  To read about all of their pod types, click here.

My personal favorite is the purple one, Arpeggio.  I use it to make my lattes.  I also use the vanilio one to make my homemade caramel macchiatos.

They have a wide range of machines in all price ranges.  They usually have deals between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so keep your eyes open during this holiday season!

Lattissima Plus, $399
Gran Maestria, $699. Includes a cup warmer!
Essenza, $99, cheapest model.

I really love this coffee machine, more so than the Keurig.  If you are debating between the two of them for this Christmas, as an owner of both, let me give you a quick list of pros/cons.

KEURIG VS NESPRESSO

Keurig

pros: slightly cheaper pods (by $0.03!!), machine can be cheaper, pods easier to purchase in stores, pods come in many different flavors, brews a large cup of drip coffee

cons: coffee is more watered down and therefore cannot make as good as lattes, my machine BROKE after <2 years which I consider a huge con considering the price! No milk frother.

Nespresso

pros: brews strong espresso shot which is great if you like lattes and cappuccinos, coffee is more foamy and tastes better, milk frother is fantastic

cons: machine more expensive, can’t make a large cup of drip coffee, not many pod coffee flavors, can only brew coffee and not milk chocolate/teas.

So there you have it.  I have used both machines for 1 year and those are my honest opinions.  I was not paid (unfortunately!) to write anything about these companies or their products.

Alright, enough typing, time to go enjoy my home made cinnamon dolce latte!

I was NOT compensated for this post.
